The party head northwards from the warehouse district, looking for the kitchen.  They smelled it before they saw it, a miasma of cooked meats and fish assaulted their noses, but it seemed homely enough, an impression that was maintained when they entered the kitchen.  It was really two areas, the kitchen area where the food was prepared, and the dining area where it was consumed.  In front of a roaring fire with a pot of stewing vegetables stood a sour-faced woman cutting up some meat.  To the left was a kindly-looking older man, clearly a fisherman by his garb and the accessories around him.  There were several diners also present, munching on food.  Crucially, neither Guts or Nerwen could sense the presence of the Darkstar; although they were not experts in it, these people lacked the fervour in the eyes.

Guts walked up to the woman cutting the meat, and said:

"Six meals, please."

Maurice walks up to the fisherman.
"Hello there. How's the fish today?"

[Endgame]

I eye the mushrooms behind the meat-chopper.

"Huh, those look exotic. What are they for?"

The woman frowned as Guts approached, but there was no hostility in it.  It seemed to simply be her usual demeanour.


"Welcome to Ismelda's kitchen.  We can do you fish, chicken or steak, travellers.  Each meal is 5 gold, and I can also offer some wrapped food so you can take it away."

Fish - Consumable item.  Restores 10 health.  Costs 10 gold
Steak - Consumable item.  Restores 10 health and 5 Ether.  Costs 20 gold

OOC: In case it's not clear, the meals are the cost to use the kitchens in game terms, to sit down and talk to the staff and patrons.  The others are separate consumable items you can take with you.


Maurice walked across to the fisherman.

He is busy gutting a fish, and has a box of them to one side, but stops when the Paladin talks to him.


"Welcome, friend.  I am Hergrit.  The fish were always plentiful in Miranda, but these days much less so.  The waters are full of fish other than these, and we are not the only ones hunting them."  Hergrit sounds mournful.

Sorrow looks behind Ismelda to the row of vegetables.


She sees him looking.

"I do the best stews in all of Miranda, I source the ingredients myself.  You won't find better mushrooms or pumpkins than these," she says with a hint of pride.

Guts raised an eyebrow, 5 gold for a meal? That was outrageous. Nevertheless, Guts dropped 30 gold on the counter, to make sure they could all have a meal.

"I'll have some of that stew, and a drink."

Guts proceeded to sit down at the table, next to the man in the armour and the helmet, the Raider asked:

"The city looks like hell, what's going on here?"

"Who am I to refuse a good stew? I'll have a bowl, please.

Say, has that tower effected your business at all?"

Guts sat down next to the armoured man, who scowled at him as he asked his question.


"This city is finally getting some semblence of order to it.  We in the Miranda Guardsmen have been outmanned and outgunned for too long.  Now it is all changing.  I welcome it."


Sorrow struck up a conversation with Ismelda.  When he mentioned the tower Ismelda shivered.


"That's black work, that is.  Nothing good will come of that tower.  The Dark General's fortress, it is.  Now none shall oppose him," she learnt across and whispered, as if not wanting the armoured man to hear.

Meanwhile Maurice was chatting to Hergrit.


"Oh no, the Free Islands Fishing Guild are not a problem.  We all have treaties and agreements for reserves and such.  No, since the arrival of the Dark General, there are other things in the water besides these small fish.  Evil, wretched things.  Twisted by arcane sorcery, no doubt."

"So this Dark General guy, what's he doing to the city, exactly? And what happened to the previous leaders of Miranda?"

[Zakura]

Mizuki pulls out her magic compass and absent-mindelly checks it. " Then she uses her magnifying glass on her stew.

Nerwen takes her meal and sits at the table next to the figure with long hair

[Endgame]

I fainlty overhear Nerwen speak to the long-haired fellow. Is the "stars shine on our meeting" her stock phrase or something?

"Is the general causing you any direct harm, miss?"

"Thanks for the food." I grunt with my face full of food.
"I'm pretty sure the stew isn't poisonous, as I don't seem to be dead.

As she did, a rolling wave of blackness swept through the kitchen.
There was a blink and everything was as it was before. Except, not quite.
She shook her head slowly and said,

The party notice a black cat walk past, and Mizuki mutters, "Deja vu..."


4 conversations take place between the party and the people in the kitchens.

Guts asked the Guardsman about Haroka and the previous leaders of Miranda.  He replied, "Haroka is purifying this city, cleaning it of the scum and filth that had accrued here.  He started with two thirds of the Ruling Three - representatives of the Tourist Guild and the Fishing Guilds were removed, leaving the Miranda Guardsmen in place.  We help the Dark General enforce the new laws."

Nerwen spoke to the long-haired chap, who seemed excited to see her.  "Greetings fair maiden, we do not get many Elves visiting Miranda these days."

Sorrow continued talking to Ismelda, who grumbled away at him.  "I've never seen Haroka, although I have seen his Inquisitors.  Strange-looking fellows they are.  Much like yourself, if you don't mind me saying so."

Maurice continued to speak to Hergrit.  This seemed somehow new, like it had not happened before.  "You would not want to each much of what's in the water these days, friend.  But these fish are fine," he said, indicating his box full of fresh fish.

Mizuki absent mindedly checks her compass, and finds that it is spinning around and around.  She thinks this indicates the presence of a Summoning Amulet nearby!

What do the party want to do?  Try to punch out the only obvious lawful presence, or something a bit lower-key?

Ismelda's frown threatened to take over her entire face as she glowered at the Raider.

"'Ere, you can't do that!  Who'd'ya think you are?  Wilfold, keep an eye on them, will you?", she asked the Guardsman, who nodded with relish.


"I could have sworn this ruffian here took a swing at me earlier.  I shall watch him like a hawkfish."
