Nah, chronologically it should be the first. It's mostly based in the First and Second Ages (Hobbit and LOTR were the Third).

Peter Jackson: "seventeen-year-delay makes a better Hobbit"
Posted Image

Seventeen years have passed since Peter Jackson approached Miramax about bringing one of his favorite JRR Tolkien tales The Hobbit to the big screen.

Speaking to the Dominion Post‘s Lenna Tailor Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens speculate that the delay, during which they went on to shoot three wildly successful movies based on Tolkien Lord of the Rings, might have been for the best.

Jackson: “I remember in 1995 I made the first call to [Miramax's] Harvey Weinstein and said we were interested in doing The Hobbit. The idea was, if it was successful, we would do Lord of the Rings. But Harvey said the rights were in a very complicated state — however, Lord of the Rings was potentially available. It’s strange how that call 17 years ago was the beginning of this whole process.”

“It was fate that we did Lord of the Rings first because it has made for a better Hobbit,” adds writer-producer Philippa Boyens. “It would’ve been a very different film if we’d gone the other way around. Maybe fate was also waiting for Martin [Freeman] to play Bilbo at exactly the right time and age.”

My thoughts on how they'll do this:

1st - Beginning up to maybe when they get rescued by the Eagles.
2nd - Dropped off in Carrock up to the part where Bilbo's having his little conversation with Smaug.
3rd - From the end of 2. to the end of the movie.

And also any little details Jackson will bother to throw in.

And which apprentices do you happen to be referring to? My knowledge of the book is a little old, since I haven't read it in awhile.

The appendices include the White Council too and we had a picture of that recently, for some reason I'm pretty sure you're wrong about that.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE....!!

I'm going to have to watch it a few times just to digest it all.  Also, the official Hobbit site has all 5 different endings to the trailer.  Hilarious!

It's time for the dwarves to shine! I'm really interested to see the dwarves take the spotlight in this movie as we only got to see Gimli in action in the LOTR trilogy while the other races had significant exposure (humans, elves, hobbits, heck even orcs and Uruk-Hais had more screen time!). Also nice to see a 'younger' Gollum in the trailer!

I'm eagerly anticipating this movie and hoping it would even be better than the Avengers or TDKR. My only concern is I might unfairly hold this up to the high standard of the LOTR trilogy, so anything less than the epic storyline might be disappointing (not a book reader so I don't know the story of the Hobbit).

Well, it turns out Bilbo was (kind of) right about the use of appendices. From Wikipedia:

Quote

On 30 July 2012, Jackson confirmed plans to make a third film, turning his adaptation of The Hobbit into a trilogy.[145][146] According to Jackson, the third film would make extensive use of the appendices that Tolkien wrote to expand the story of Middle-Earth (published in the back of The Return of the King). Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen have already been contacted about appearing in a third film.[148] The first and second films were shot back-to-back in New Zealand and are currently in post-production; principal photography began on 21 March 2011 and ended on 6 July 2012.[120] While the third film will largely make use of footage originally shot for the first and second films, it will require additional filming as well.[149]

This probably means it'll just be a really extensive back story, eg. the dwarves talking about the founding of Moria, the Elves speaking of the downfall of Numenor, etc, etc.

On the contrary, it'll make it much more interesting. More backstory on the each of the races at the last (Moria, Mirkwood/Greenwood, the Istari, etc, etc.) It'll be far superior than just strictly sticking with The Hobbit content.

Found a preview for the first disc of the Hobbit Special Addiction soundtrack. It has about 1 minute per song. Sounds really good, but I can hear a lot of similarities between this and Howard Shore's last score, Hugo.

Still, it sounds really good, and I love the dwarves singing the Things that Bilbo Baggins Hates song!

A bit more than 2 more weeks left until the Hobbit. I'm so hyped! I would of never thought a year ago I would be this into LOTR/The Hobbit. :classic:
Here's a great production video by Peter Jackson to hold us over.

I'm gonna see it after school on the release date, hopefully in 48 fps in 3D. :classic:

Yeah, I'm seeing it in 3D, but no where close enough for a midnight is playing it so we'll have to see it at least twice. :sweet:

Is anyone else nervous about seeing the film in 48 fps? I've watched the trailer with a high frame-rate, and it really threw me. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. I kinda felt like I was watching a BBC documentary or something - nothing like that classic cinema-feel.

I figure I'll only be able to see this movie for the first time once, so I want it to make a good impression. I'd hate to be 30 minutes into it and still be weirded out by the FR. :sceptic:

Regular frame rate or 3D high frame rate? The debate continues...

My vectors exam is just after the midnight premiere so no tickets then for me. :(

I'll probably catch the next day or the Saturday the week after if tickets have been sold out by then.

Wait, is the 48 fps for 3D only?
