Why don't you start it after you've taken the pictures? I can't understand this way of starting new threads.

But I'm looking forward to see the review

Why don't you start it, when you got the pictures? I can't understand this way of starting new threads...

I'm planning to have it finished by tomorrow, and if someone else is doing it at the same time, there is no use for me to do it.

There are already several reviews of it available on Internet including some very good videos in YouTube.

I have to convert the images, upload them to a webhost, organize them in folders there and come up with something clever to write. I'll leave it uploading till tomorrow, then I'll start in the evening. Hopefully I'll be finished by Thursday with the whole thing.

9397 Logging truck review

tn_dscn1245.jpg

The box is about 1/3 filled with parts, and the instructions are packed in cardboard and plastic just like it should be along with the sticker sheet.

This set contains 3 instruction books for the main model, the alternate has to be downloaded from the Lego website.

tn_dscn1251.jpg

The DSS (Dreaded Sticker Sheet) is enclosed in the cardboard also. It contains 20 stickers, which aren't numbered like in previous sets I've built.

This set introduces four new parts, shown below.

tn_dscn1243.jpg

This is called "Technic, Liftarm Triangle Thin, Type II", and replaces the previous triangle liftarm.

tn_dscn1256.jpg

The new mini turntable, also featured in the mini excavator set.

tn_dscn1259.jpg

tn_dscn1264.jpg

tn_dscn1265.jpg

Another new part, the "Axle and Pin Connector Perpendicular Double 4L" is introduced with this set.

tn_dscn1276.jpg

Lastly, this is called "Technic, Axle Connector Hub with 3 Axles". It's a Bionicle and Hero Factory part, first time used in the Technic line in this set.

Some random shots of the outspread parts:

tn_dscn1278.jpg

tn_dscn1284.jpg

tn_dscn1285.jpg

The small parts; bushes and pins:

tn_dscn1288.jpg

Beams:

tn_dscn1290.jpg

Now on with the build, first it's the 2nd axle with a differential to drive the engine.

tn_dscn1293.jpg

tn_dscn1294.jpg

Really micro steps in this set, this is step 9 of 155.

tn_dscn1295.jpg

Wheels fixed in place with an 11 axle and two grey "Liftarm 2 x 4 L-Shape Thick"

tn_dscn1296.jpg

tn_dscn1297.jpg

tn_dscn1298.jpg

tn_dscn1299.jpg

Adding a driveshaft, and extending the chassis forward.

tn_dscn1300.jpg

These are added to support the front part of the frame:

tn_dscn1301.jpg

These make this:

tn_dscn1302.jpg

Placed in the front along with some more reinforcing beams:

tn_dscn1303.jpg

Now the base frame of the truck is finished. We've reached step 27 of 155:

tn_dscn1304.jpg

Steering mechanism added to the front:

tn_dscn1305.jpg

tn_dscn1307.jpg

Front bumber added along with the HOG steering:

tn_dscn1309.jpg

tn_dscn1310.jpg

tn_dscn1311.jpg

You can see the bumper to the far left.

tn_dscn1312.jpg

tn_dscn1313.jpg

tn_dscn1314.jpg

A gear rack is placed on top of the driveshaft, tilted into place, and secured with a 3 axle.

tn_dscn1315.jpg

Adding the back of the cab is added, you get an idea of the size.

Now for the interesting part; gearbox building. The PF motor is added in this section.

tn_dscn1316.jpg

tn_dscn1319.jpg

tn_dscn1322.jpg

tn_dscn1323.jpg

tn_dscn1324.jpg

tn_dscn1325.jpg

tn_dscn1326.jpg

tn_dscn1327.jpg

tn_dscn1328.jpg

Finished gearbox, now adding the stickered 9 beams. I found it easier to sticker them prior to mounting them on the chassis.

tn_dscn1329.jpg

2 4axles with stop secures the changeover catches in place.

tn_dscn1330.jpg

Gearbox mounted on chassis.

tn_dscn1334.jpg

The next steps features the new "Black Technic, Liftarm Triangle Thin, Type II", but the instructions aren't updated to the last parts. Thus, this picture is provided in the instructions to show that it is interchangeable with the previous type:

tn_dscn1339.jpg

Added to the main structure along with a worm gear and some yellow half-bushes.

tn_dscn1335.jpg

tn_dscn1336.jpg

tn_dscn1338.jpg

The main base for the outriggers is finished.

tn_dscn1340.jpg

This black 20T DB gear later controls the outriggers.

tn_dscn1341.jpg

These two gear racks will control the movement of the crane.

tn_dscn1343.jpg

tn_dscn1344.jpg

These are the gear racks for the cranes operation.

Next is building the base for the outriggers.

tn_dscn1345.jpg

This adds strenght to the back end of the truck bed.

tn_dscn1346.jpg

You can see them both added to the superstructure here.

tn_dscn1347.jpg

Added a 11L beam and a 16T tooth gear at the end of booklet one.

Adding HOG steering with the usual two knobwheels.

tn_dscn1351.jpg

tn_dscn1352.jpg

Next adding an inline 4 cylinder engine, which uses the "Light Bluish Gray Technic, Axle Connector Hub with 3 Axles" as a fan.

tn_dscn1353.jpg

tn_dscn1354.jpg

The cocpit rear frame is next.

tn_dscn1355.jpg

tn_dscn1356.jpg

This horizontal beam with L-shaped ends is the base for the outriggers.

tn_dscn1357.jpg

Cocpit seats next.

tn_dscn1359.jpg

tn_dscn1360.jpg

Here is the base for the hinged doors.

tn_dscn1362.jpg

And the doors themselves, with nice stickers with what I believe is a fake phone number.

tn_dscn1365.jpg

tn_dscn1368.jpg

The roof;

tn_dscn1369.jpg

tn_dscn1370.jpg

windows;

tn_dscn1373.jpg

tn_dscn1375.jpg

mirrors;

tn_dscn1376.jpg

sunscreen and horns make up the rest of the cab.

tn_dscn1390.jpg

The hood is next. It's built upside down.

tn_dscn1391.jpg

tn_dscn1392.jpg

tn_dscn1394.jpg

tn_dscn1396.jpg

tn_dscn1397.jpg

tn_dscn1398.jpg

tn_dscn1405.jpg

tn_dscn1406.jpg

tn_dscn1407.jpg

tn_dscn1408.jpg

Finished;

tn_dscn1410.jpg

Mounted on chassis;

Adding some outrigger knobwheels and rear wheelwells.

tn_dscn1415.jpg

tn_dscn1416.jpg

Battery box in place:

tn_dscn1417.jpg

And a frame for it, along with the exhaust pipes:

tn_dscn1418.jpg

tn_dscn1419.jpg

Very nice:

tn_dscn1420.jpg

Two of these are bases for the outriggers.

tn_dscn1425.jpg

tn_dscn1427.jpg

Placed on each side.

tn_dscn1428.jpg

Now to make the turntable base for the crane.

tn_dscn1429.jpg

tn_dscn1431.jpg

Placed at the start of booklet 3,

tn_dscn1432.jpg

and locked in place by two 6 axles.

tn_dscn1433.jpg

Outriggers are made in the usual manner.

tn_dscn1434.jpg

tn_dscn1435.jpg

tn_dscn1440.jpg

Placed here:

tn_dscn1441.jpg

Some panels are placed behind them to hide away the PF motor.

Now we build the crane, starting with a base placed on top of the turntable.

tn_dscn1443.jpg

tn_dscn1444.jpg

tn_dscn1445.jpg

tn_dscn1446.jpg

First part of the log cage placed behind the crane base, along with a linear actuator.

tn_dscn1448.jpg

tn_dscn1449.jpg

tn_dscn1450.jpg

A 12 axle with a 12t bevel gear on top runs through a H-frame. Two yellow 15L beams supports the structure.

tn_dscn1454.jpg

This gear rack is placed on top of the linear actuator.

tn_dscn1455.jpg

tn_dscn1456.jpg

tn_dscn1457.jpg

A 7L axle with a bush runs through a "Gear 20 Tooth Bevel with Pin Hole" is keeping it in place.

tn_dscn1458.jpg

Extension of the crane arm with these pieces in step 144.

tn_dscn1459.jpg

tn_dscn1460.jpg

A mini LA is used for the final crane movement.

tn_dscn1461.jpg

tn_dscn1462.jpg

Now to create the Log grabber.

tn_dscn1463.jpg

tn_dscn1464.jpg

tn_dscn1465.jpg

tn_dscn1466.jpg

Finished with stickers. The grabber uses the same principle as the 8110 Unimog with meshing 16T gears and bent liftarms.

Now for the arm that controls the grabber. It uses the mini turntable, which consists of two elements. A 12T double-bevel gear controls it via a 5.5 axle.

tn_dscn1467.jpg

tn_dscn1468.jpg

tn_dscn1471.jpg

tn_dscn1472.jpg

Completed crane arm.

tn_dscn1473.jpg

Attached to the truck.

tn_dscn1474.jpg

An 8T and a 24T gear are placed at the base of the crane to control the turning.

tn_dscn1475.jpg

The log compartment is made from single beams with liftarms.

tn_dscn1476.jpg

Adding the wheels. I'd wish for dual rear wheels like the 8285, but I guess I'll keep on dreaming.

The log consists of 8 wheelrims, and two 12L axles. But there's only one. What a small forest this truck must have found.

tn_dscn1477.jpg

tn_dscn1478.jpg

Some finished shots:

tn_dscn1479.jpg

Crane extended:

tn_dscn1480.jpg

tn_dscn1481.jpg

Ready to drive:

tn_dscn1483.jpg

tn_dscn1485.jpg

This truck looks great, but should have more logs. A polarity switch should be mandatory on all Technic models IMO. Stopping the crane at the center is a pain with the battery box switch.

Comparison with the other Uwe Wabra (UW) trucks, 8285 Tow Truck and 8258 Crane Truck

tn_dscn1488.jpg

tn_dscn1489.jpg

tn_dscn1490.jpg

That's all. Please leave me some feedback if you think I should have done something differently.

i like Uwe Wabra's truck models, but i can't seem to hook myself to the 9397 model. the crane looks too flimsy, unlike what he did in 8258.

Good post! I was hoping I could afford that model but alas it was not to be...yet! Anyway, your post has just helped me solve a query.

Thanks

Nice review!

The sticker sheet doesn't have numbers as there's not many stickers I'd say,Also u think the phone number on the sticker is not real lol :) it's just the set number and year :)

Thanks David. It was sort of a joke from my side with the phone number. This set is currently in pieces, and will go to someone who is insterested in taking it off my hands. I don't have the space for this anymore...:S

Hey LIN,

I just wanted to thank you here for all of the excellent Technic reviews you've posted. Based on your review, I just ordered the 8462 tow truck from Ebay, which I'm really looking forward to.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks lazylegoist. Feedback is always welcome:) I'm hoping you'll like the tow truck. I plan on keeping all my pneumatic sets, they are so good.

I love the comparison images. I'm excited about building this one at some point. It would be nice if there was a way to make the claw controls work from the truck also. I guess you would need to add a switch along with the necessary mods to make it happen. The Designer Han rear wheel mod or similar is a must.

Well, there's not enough room to route the grab function to the central structure. I would sure love to see that in a model. So far, this is only done with pneumatics (8110, 8868). Maybe some cv joints could be used?
