You would do well to keep a civil tongue, lest you bring the full might of Kaliphlin upon you and your Guild. The Keeper of Secrets is an ancient entity, and it's power lies not in physical might, but in magic, more powerful than you Drow can comprehend!

The Keeper of Secrets

The Keeper of Secrets is an embodiment (often referred to as a Living Effigy) of a Lesser God, Amun Thoth.

As well as being a vicious warrior, Keeper of Secrets is also capable of weaving powerful spells of misdirection and mystification. It invades the thoughts of its enemies, sending them visions of glory, titillating their egos, and caressing their inner desires to lead them astray. It seeks to give and receive sensation in all forms, be it pain or pleasure. It is also capable of shrouding itself in a cloud of arcane mist which confuses surrounding enemies, allowing the Lesser God to prey on them easily.

The Keeper of Secret lives to feed from others emotions, especially fear, hope, despair. It loves the sensation of cutting through flesh and piercing minds, bestowing the feeling of pain onto its enemies. As well as striking amazingly fast with its six clawed limbs, it also causes Corruption, as it turns emotions such as courage, bravery and valour into selfishness, cowardice and despair.

As it is with most avatars of the Lesser Gods, the Keeper of Secrets demands sacrifice. It is particularly fond of exceptionally self-absorbed, self-serving, and exceedingly driven souls. As such, the Drow are one of its particularly favored tributes.

As-Salam Alaikum brotherWahil Musca. It is good that you heard from our scouts, we have sent them far and wide to bring forth the worthy to this council here in Petraea. And this your son? Bahru, you are the spitting image of your father - are you of age for Ale yet? if so, join us in the grand hall.

--With regards to Slave Camp... you can if you want, but I promise nothing the safety of such a camp - there are some here that don't take kindly to slavers.

Interesting ideas Basiliscus - I like a spice area - we DO have the sultan of spice... Though I think the we were thinking of putting Las Vegga there.
It seems we have a fairly good relationship with Avalonia - which makes sense to have good trade, their wood for our oil etc. So yeah the forest aren't as important - I thought it would be good to have them in case anyone wanted to build some foresty castles.

I'm not sure about the slavery bit... while some pockets would be interesting - given that the supposed leader of the guild is a freed x-slave I would think there would be some what anty slavery action going - but if you want to take it up and be abit of a dark horse in the realm - by all means... we'll tolerate you with some polite hostility between us.

Oops...sorry if I misjudged the ethics of this Guild. Truth be told, Wahil tires of the animosity shown towards him thanks to his business, and hopes to allow his son to use the fortune he has acquired to carry out good deeds for the better of the Kaliphlin realm. Wahil wants to stop trading in slaves and to reduce the worry he has by having to constantly watch his back - he can't even use the oil road due to his enemies. He does have a large personal army (more later) and a rather dubiously acquired fortune - hopefully these will be put into good service!

Probably scrap the idea of having a slave-market in Stone Town then. My other suggestions still stand if everyone else agrees?

(Although I do think perhaps you're being a bit naive about the whole slavery thing - there are plenty of example of former slaves (e.g. Spartacus or Baibars) who despite being freed from their life of slavery made very little effort to remove slavery altogether. Although this discussion is probably beyond the scope of this post - I am happy to make Wahil a former slave-trader turned philanthropist so he fits in! Sorry for misjudging at first)

Vellethul brings up an excellent point, currently we are in good standings with the other three realms thanks to our ambassadors and some properly placed bribes. While peace still exists we should look towards more trade selling to the others even acting as a third party to trade between two other realms.

For now is the time to build up our warchest. While I know the High King won't permit outright war - I fear that raids from other guilds may increase.

So we must ready ourselves and look towards strengthening our borders!

How goes the tower rebuilding efforts?

I have not heard the official decree but you can assu$e the High King would want the towers done 30 nights after his order to build.

I am hoping to have something in time for the deadline.

Another general point - the first challenge is up now. I have quite a few ideas about future MOCs that I might start in parallel with the watchtower. Is it acceptable to enter these in future challenges if they are posted beforehand (i.e. say I build a castle (as well as a watchtower) and post it before the end of the watchtower challenge. Can I enter this MOC for a future challenge?). If you could discuss this with the other admins and let me know that would be great! (For the record, I think you should be able to do this)

********************

Also, I think that our Lord should consider making a more formal administrative structure in the kingdom, as the other Guilds are ahead of us in this regard. Titles could include Viziers (administrative officials), Satraps (governors of provinces), Sowars (commanders of the cavalry) and Corsairs (commanders of the fleets). Just some more ideas. We could also standardise our currency (Dinars?).

Let me know your thoughts!

I'd agree that the other guilds having mini-challenges and titles up for grabs is a great idea.

Make a list of things that are needed in Kaliphlin, perhaps, and have people attaining titles and honours for fulfilling them.

(I'd personally find this helpful, it'd give me an idea of what to build, other than a few ideas I've got floating around the old noggin.)

Also, are we all as members of the guild going to post it in our signatures? In fact, let me rephrase that. As a member of the guild, I'm going to put it in my signature. :P

I actually like the idea of some internal political tension in our guild. Maybe we are in the midst of a cultural upheaval or so.

And for me as a truth seeker: I can't do everything on my own. Sure, I can use the students but sometimes they just don't have enough muscles for some tasks... I would be pleased if you would at least provide some black market options...

Dextrus Flagg, don't be offended by my wishes. Even if I would have some (illegal?) slaves, I'd treat them very well. They are far better off than other poor people. It's not like we have a health care system in Kaliphlin... right?

So, Wahil Musca, maybe you can take on some 'polite hostility' as SI-mocs said?

Sorry if I was too in character - but yeah I don't mind the slavers - like I said I think it would fit well in the world - and while Drextus may not necessarily mind slaves, SlavERS I would think would be slightly more touchy... but like I said - this could be interesting as you guys point out... I don't mind if we create slaver center we still have like a year to go... more possible plot points the better
Also don't change your backstory, it was a good one ;)

Excellent point. I have brought it up with the Council to see what they have to say.
Before we have discussed the concept of the 'Free Build' vs the 'Competition' builds... the idea we were floating was that everyone could build whatever when ever they wanted, and we would introduce monthly (give or take) challenges for 'Coin' - and every one in awhile a Major challenge that would last longer and build up even more Coin. and of course Prizes... and we may or may not have something special at the end.

Oh... and we'll want to get as much Coin as we call... it'll be important later on ... trust me.

I'm more for the titles based upon making Moc's, but if those Moc's should be themed around one of the titles that Basiliscus suggested than feel free to use it. That all said, I whole heartedly agree that we should aim for quality over quantity, perhaps there is a more balanced approach? Can't we all just commit to make awesome Moc's and not worry about rushing to earn the most titles  Maybe we could have a system where it takes three or four approvals from guild members for a Moc to qualify as title worthy. That way people can build as many Moc's as fast as they like, but they will have to stand up to the standard of the guild to qualify. That way people will read and comment on each other's mocs. Would it be too much for folks to edit their Moc's posts with how many approvals they have?

Update on watchtower, keep in mind this is an early WIP so let me know what you think of the general color scheme architecture, so on and so forth. The setting is for the edge of the desert/easter mountain region. If parts allow I'll probably add 1 more story to it.

Yes!

As for your WIP shot, this is looking very good, and has some similarities to what I am planning!  The only suggestion I can make is to move the Lion's Head Brick one stud back into the interior (so it sits more flush with the walls) - of course if you are making an interior you may not want to loose the space on the inside?

I agree that if people free build a MOC this month, and it happens to fit the guild challenge in say March, then it should be allowed to be submitted for the challenge when it occurs - although of course people may want to revisit and improve the MOC as our ideas and vision constantly change over time.

People of Kaliphiln.   For many years now, our two great lands have prospered from the trade between us and long may it continue. We have made new fortifications along the trade routes to ensure safety along the passage to and from our lands. Avalonia would like to make it known that any enemy of Kaliphiln is an enemy of Avalonia. If anyone wishes to attack Kaliphiln then they will also have to face the might of Avalonia! That is our decree and one will shall uphold! Rest assured that in times of trouble, Avalonia's got your back!

We are indeed thankful for the safety of our merchants and travellers between our two great lands, which we endeavour to reciprocate as far as we can.

I was thinking that if we had titles, then they are given by nomination - so we are kind of a democratic guild.  So we have themes such as: agriculture, trade, diplomacy, armies, fortification, domestic architecture, weapons of war, education, resource extraction etc. - people free build within these.  When they post the MOC to gain the title it needs to be nominated (or elected) by us.  So say once five guild members nominate the MOC for a title, the member gains the title.

Sure thing. I just didn't want to be miles away with what everyone else was going for within the guild. Wahil will still trade in slaves but he is trying to build up a power base in the Spice Islands (the home of the Sudite peoples). He will be recruiting for his personal army, which will consist mainly of Sudite tribesmen but also some more heavily armoured professional soldiers. Just for the record - I'm (personally) not much into magic or monsters etc (that's not to say I don't think it's cool when others do it, or that sometimes I will have magical elements or monsters) so most of my MOCs will be more in the style of Game of Thrones rather than Lord of the Rings for example.

Maybe I was a bit misleading with my earlier post. I am not wanting to be a "Title-monger"    but my advice for our Guild would be to be as unique as possible. For me the other Guilds may produce architecture similar in style to middle-ages Western Europe. I think we have a great opportunity to have a very unique Guild - in titles, architecture, armies, etc. So I was just suggesting some titles which would fit in with this (I deliberately didn't specify the titles - they were just generic). What I mean is use titles from history which sound like they would fit in rather than generic titles. There are likely to be more than one Vizier (e.g. finance, agriculture, etc), Satrap (e.g. Spice Islands, Badlands, etc)...you get the idea.

I agree quality must be important in such a small Guild. I will start work on my outpost tomorrow and try have some WIP shots by the end of the weekend.

Also I was thinking we should create a private Flickr group to post WIP shots we don't want the other guilds to see? It would be invite only of course.

Another idea I had was that on Flickr we could use the excellent map already created and add notes with links to MOCs showing their geographical location. That way we would have a pseudo-interactive map.

Just a brain dump!

More over the weekend!

Speaking of dump... I can't build castley* stuff. I currently have the skeleton of a watchtower that's shaped like a champagne bottle... lolwut.

In fact, a champagne bottle with a face.

See, you couldn't make this up if you tried...

EDIT, pic:

*By castley, I mean a medieval structure. I can do beasts, vehicles, and so on with more confidence. But buildings... Fuuu.

Can I third this?  :classic:

I'm all for the idea of people being nominated for them, instead of a free for all. I personally would rather earn one title that other people nominated me for, than to have ten titles because I was able to make a bunch of Mocs in a short period of time.

I love the fact that this guild is so varied, we are not limited by what other people are making so much, and I think in the end that will be our advantage. Quality instead of quantity!

I've been busy this week, but I'll be posting some WIP shots of my watchtower when I get back home tonight. This one is based more over towards Qarkyr by the mountains.

Sorry for being so inactive thus far, but Semiramis will march her troops for everyone to see tomorrow. The remains of the Azzurat army are mighty indeed, consisting of war elephants, camels, golem magi and even a trapped djinni.

Welcome Pico des Verches! Another brother to join the ranks. Our strength grows with with every passing day....

--

Captain Hardiel, thank you for your progress report - fantastic progress! the colour highlights are great, as is the dark tan layers on the bottom.

Rasputin, excellent intel reports - it is good we're finding more about the these mysterious friends of ours in the Mountains. I may have to take a trip Qarkyr region and meet these cloth wrapped tribesmen.

Yakob, That is a might fine looking tower you have started. Perhaps you should add some additional tiling to reinforce the structure - I have heard reports of catapults and other weapons we must be wary about. When I meet the other Guild Leaders in Cedrica, we decided agreed to prolong the peace - but I am not overly confident how long the other leaders can keep their minons in line... so we must be ready....

Great leader of of Avalonia, we thank you for your envoy and to let us toast our renewed friendship and peace. As a token of Kaliphlin's good will, accept this barrel of our finest black oil for your Oil Lamps and ... if the need arises...  it can be used as the a devastating incendiary projectile.

RE:
Signatures
As a rule - let's all add our names in our signatures - makes things easier to keep track of ;)

RE: Titles
Fantastic idea. I was hopping for some sort of nomination or democratic process. I think that will make it much more rewarding when the Title is earned.
I would also like to make the first nomination:

Tafik Regex Marmota (NiceMarmot)- for "Master Cartographer"

RE: Flickr Group

I thought about this before...  There are some pros and cons.
Cons - This is suppose to be a EB thing - makes sense to share it here. As well it gives other guilds opportunity to join into our little group. Not everyone is on flickr - some are on mocpages etc. And there are some that are just lurkers that also wouldn't be able to enjoy our work.

Pros:
Flickr's built in picture sharing / note adding is a fantastic way to collaborate and offer suggestions.
It provides privacy for our 'secret' builds and other works.

What does everyone think?

RE: Map
Yes the flickr map would work well - so we can plop down where things are... though there is an official map coming out soon that will be hosted here so that people can find everything.

@Wahil - Don't worry about it - I think you should keep going with that angle. I hear Dextrus' brother may be involved in some shady dealings.

Over all I'm very happy of the group we have so far (and hopefully more joining!) - I really do think we have one of the better realms - there is SO much we can do with the south. So many different locals and architectural styles... it's really up to us what we want to do

And for the record - it's understandable people are busy - so don't kill your self trying to build or addictively refreshing this thread. We'll be here all year :)

I can't wait to see everyone's WIP...

Edit-

Yakob had a good point ... Petraea is kinda in the middle of no where... anyone have objections to extending either salt lake or Akrabi river and rerouting it through Petraea? that makes a bit more sense no?

For all the newer members, don't forget to read the first post - I'll try to keep it up to date with all the newest info...

Wahil wants to stop trading in slaves and to reduce the worry he has by having to constantly watch his back - he can't even use the oil road due to his enemies.
The PGTC no longer trades in slaves after the Director of Accounts proved that the deferred liabilities and warranty provisions on these goods soon eliminated the apparently attractive initial margins.  However, we welcome enterprise and commerce unfettered by petty regulation.

flickr group and map - I think it is a good idea, I am on flickr.  The comments feature is a really good way to post helpful suggestions.  I am a bit wary of clogging up the main forum with WIPs, but I would really appreciate C&C.

Not that we are solely interested in the profits from logistics, and our alliance with the Mummies who protect travellers...but we thought Petrea`s remote location in the desert would be a key defensive advantage?  If we want it to be more interesting, we can feature the plunging ravines and canyons?

I am loving the uniqueness of this guild.  My style will aim for a blend of Egyptian, Orient Expedition and Prince of Persia to start with as we are based in Petrea, the heart of the desert, but no doubt through time we will expand the business of the PGTC to the mountain, forest and coast areas.

With regards to the river relocation issue, here's a hilariously crude butchering of our region's map.

Ignore the dragon and the giant surfer, but note that the salt lake has moved down below the capital. This makes is realistically possible to colonise the location, since we have water and thus the ability to cultivate limited crops.

I liked the idea of water /river carving a huge canyon through/near Petraea...

I don't know... I think those dragons and surfer is pretty spiffy
