acidophilus Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I thought the original build for Fire Lord looked silly, with it's awkward proportions, antlers, etc, so I remade it. I wanted to create the appearance of a tormented monster. I added bulk to the smaller parts of the body, giving him broader shoulders, adding trans-orange parts to his torso, tanks on it's back, tubes connecting them to it's weapons, and more armor all over, so it would not have any appearance of looking weak. I added translucent fire parts at several parts of it's body to give it a look of fire emitting from within it'd body. I finished by adding chains. I replaced the antlers with the fire parts as well, I really didn't like those antlers. There is a lot "going on" on this MOC, and I was very careful to ensure that nothing inhibited it's movement, and pose-ability. My goal was to improve on the original figure, and I feel I did. Let me know what you think. Quote
Aanchir Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I can't say I like this MOC. On one hand, I understand your criticisms of the original set. On the other hand, your model seems to be mostly just the original set decked out in loads and loads of clutter. There's nothing cohesive about it, and the cohesiveness of the original set is one of the reasons I liked it in spite of its flaws. I can't think of any realistic suggestions I could make to improve this model besides removing all the extraneous details and starting from scratch. It does have some redeeming values-- the hip area feels much more solid tham Fire Lord's. But otherwise, the color scheme and detail pieces all feel very badly organized. One big criticism I've seen of the actual Fire Lord set is that he has too many colors that aren't well organized-- with that in mind, it was probably a mistake to add lots of transparent fluorescent reddish orange parts, transparent bright orange and transparent red blended flames, and dark stone grey chains without removing colors from the color scheme to allow for those changes. How's his posability? Does the new hip design make it better or worse? Also, is it difficult to balance him in his various poses with so many added parts contributing to his weight? Quote

I bought fire lord for it's parts. After I took the parts that I wanted I was left with Parts, that I didn't think want to use on other figures, but I thought fit the Fire Lord character well. So I decided to attempt building the figure with those parts, the colored ones, as the base. I did feel it had a twisted, and corrupted appearance, and that's what I was going for. It's pose-ability is much improved. The Legs have much better range now, and are not restricted by the support on it's back. The arms also have more range, and pose-ability. It's balanced very well, I had no problems with it falling over. Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't nearly as pleased with the outcome of this figure as I have been with my other projects. If anyone has any suggestions for improvements, please post them. Edited October 16, 2011 by acidophilus Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I like the chains and the fire on his back. It makes him look demonic, but I don't like his weapons, the silver hilt doesn't blend with the black. Also like Aanchir stated, he is a bit cluttered. Quote
Play With Fire Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I can say I like the concept (Fire Lord looking more... fiery) but I'm not really down with the execution of it. The color needs a lot more work, it looks like it's just all over the place. Basically, what the other guys said. I like how it's built, just don't really like the cladding placement and some of the clutter on the back area. Quote
Bundalings Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 I like the fire tanks, but I think the spikes on the legs don't help and there are a few too many chains. Quote
