New modular building? 10224 Town Hall

Having seen many awesome lego modulars with nice architecture, this Town Hall seems square and very boring looking unfortunately...

I am in two minds and will prob only get it because its part of the collection...looks wise its a poor cousin to the other nicer and more intricately designed modulars..

my first post and just my 2 cents worth!

I thought it was a pretty good addition to the modular series. Well at least there's something for me to dump my money on because i burst into flames and purchase a heavily overpriced CC.

There's nothing really on the 3rd floor, just a long table and some chairs.

Could I see a picture of the box top showing piece quantities? Dark orange has not been a common color lately, and there might be some new bricks in this set not evident in pictures shown so far.

I do like dark orange; while it may be overwhelming on its own, it's a great color as a trim for reddish brown.

if i buy this set i'll probably mod it to be on just two floors (like the fire brigade) and use the remaining bricks to fill the hole left for the elevator control arm. I don't like a modular building so high and the empty row at the back is unacceptable.

Overall - this looks like a simplified modular building and very different from the rest. I cannot say that I don't like it but it could have been better.

I like the building but plain on changing the floors to extend the whole lenth of the building. I like the idea of the elevator but will have to wait to see how it works.

It's funny how people's opinions can differ. Some people think it looks too plain - I think if you add too much, it will begin to look gaudy. Vive la difference.

Wish they'd done something about the empty space on the back, though - a fire escape? Some small vents? Anything to break it up a bit. At least that's not the side you're going to be looking at, though.

I think after I build this stock, I'm going to mod it by moving the skylight so it is above the large conference table, then fill in the open floor spaces in the rear of the building. I do appreciate the large open space to let light into the lower floors, but I'd like to see more rooms/offices inside.

For the person who asked, the windoes on the top are the same as on the second and ground floor, they are just obscured by the pillars.

The bricks-quantity is also shown on the last pages of the (last) instruction book.

Perhaps you can add a picture of that here?

And for a Town Hall I would expect it to be double the size, maybe if i ever got enough money i will buy 2 of them and make on both sides in the same style a 16 stud side building because in my opinion a town hall has to be a bit larger than the buildings next to it.

It's already a fair bit larger than GE or FB. Bear in mind the TH is supposed to have been built in the late 1800's while the other modulars are presumably newer buildings(such as the FB which would have been built 40 years later) it would make sense to me that the other buildings in town would gradually catch up to the size of the TH over the years. At least, that's the story I'm going with for my town, even though technically the TH will be the newest addition and will magically appear between existing buildings.

So here my thoughts after the great surprise of finally getting a picture.

• I think that the Pet Shop will fit in well with the other building in the series.

• the interior detail of both building as well as the back are great.

• the colour's used are a nice addition.

• the detailing of the sidewalk is a little bland, this is one of my favorite things about the modular''s, the pet shops sidewalk has almost the same detailing as Green Grocer.

• I will probably place the two building to the left and right side of green grocer, colour wise RGB.

• I have no gripes with the different hight's of the building, after all most street's from the 20th and 30th in the US are this way. See pic below!

• I wander if Jamie Berard is the designer? Hope they make a video to tell us more about the set.

• Alll though it's a great set, I still like Café Corner, then Green Grocer, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, Fire Brigade in that order. Sorry didn't get Market street, because (I) still don't think it's part of the series.

• And finally can't wait to get this set on tuesday, good job to TLG for keeping it so secret for so long! :tongue:

Like I said before happens in big cities like NY all the time!

I have to say in the south of the Netherlands (Where i live)

there are many examples of those differences. Not the later

architecture of course, but there's a lot of old houses

who do have that difference in height. :)

@ grogall, I agree about market street not being a real part of the series and to be honest I never liked it much anyway.

And I don't see the Windows not lining up being an issue. It's a separate building, there's no real reason for it to line up perfectly. GE doesn't line up with FB, etc..

well if you look at the pic of grogall, all the buildings have their windows on the same height, Fire Brigade is something else in my opinion because its a fire station with a rather large garage in it. but if you place Green Grocer, Grand Emporium, Cafe Corner and Pet Shop, you see that the floors are all around the same height, and with the Town Hall its just that bit higher, i don't like that very much, the difference between heights of the building is of course normal in real life/

but it's also part of my personal preference that i rather see the windows line up a bit.

And yes i live in the south of The Netherlands as well, just north of Maastricht so i can go to there and i have many examples of the things i mentioned above, go to ''de Markt'' in Maasticht or look at the buildings along ''het Vrijthof'' in Maastricht and you see most buildings have their floors on the same height

By the way the Fire Brigade was modeled after Engine 55 in NY city which is very close to ground zero

Also a lot of firemen from this station lost there lives on 9/11

This is also a reason why Jamie did this model......

Not really, look at the top windows of the leftmost (dark red) building compared to the next one or between the fifth and sixth buildings. It's pretty common in cities where buildings have often been rebuilt as times goes by and differing standards of room height have been used.

Thanks for the background information on Fire Brigade! We live in NYC (in Manhattan). On a recent walk my six-year-old pointed to a Manhattan fire station and remarked how much it looked like Fire Brigade. We thought it was mostly a coincidence. But now I know it is not!

By the way, some people have criticized 10197 for being too small. But when you look at the real thing, you realize that the scale is quite good!
