Hi there all. I've been working on a ship for quite some time now and am nearing completion, would've been done sooner but I've done a couple redesigns and the kids got at it a couple times too. got any suggestions for the rigging? I've never liked the plastic look to the store bought ones, I'm experimenting with those lego strings now and it looks pretty decent.  Check it out

First of all, congradulations on making the first pirate related factory item I have seen... and posting it for the rest of us! thats awesome.


second, bravo on the ship! i think its looking really good! Is there a praticular ship you were modeling it after? whereas the gunports are bigger then normal lego gunports, i think they still work, as i always felt lego ones were a tad bit too small. i love the cannons, how are they next to a fig though? And wouldn't they be larger calliber then 18 pounders if you were doing minifig scale? just wondering. but anyway i cant wait to see it with the rigging and sails, what you have started is looking pretty good.

Hey that 18 pounder looks great and at 2.97 direct from lego it's cheaper than most cannons on bricklink.  

Your ship is coming along great as well look's like it will be something to be reckoned with!

Excellent ship so far!  Huge undertakings like this are far and few between, so it's always a pleasure to view them!  I've seen some types of string rigging used before, but it's been difficult finding any pictures on brickshelf.

It looks like he did all of that by hand, unless you can preorder the stuff...

I based the ship on the HMS Indefatiguable and on the most excellent pics at this site.  Although the more I design it the closer it looks to the HMS Surprise/Rose

Yeah it may be more like a 24 pounder, which would be ok for the indefatiguaqble. It looks pretty good with a cre of three or four gathered around, I'll try to post some pics over the weekend.

I love starwars lego. It seems to be the only way I can get imperial soldiers for my ship! *joke*  Actually my kids seem to have "permanently borrowed" most of mine and have amassed a fair collection.

The cannons are made of 5 of those roundy 2x2 pieces, 2 of those 1x2 bricks with a hole through it and one of those roundy cap things (real technical sounding eh?)

That is a great MOC! Thanks so much for sharing. I love you attention to detail, especially the built in ladder on the side of the hull (sorry I notice the strangest of things). The scale is huge, I wouldn't want to mess with that bad boy!

As for string, you might be able to get away with very little actually because from what it seems you are at about a similiar scale as this previously mentioned MOC. I really like this approach to rigging.

I'm sure you'll figure something out that blows us away! Thanks for sharing.

Actually we all should get used to this size of ships, actually this size is pretty normal for a real ship, we are all used at ''little'' ships mostly build on LEGO hulls, take a look at the  3D HMS Indefatiguable, it looks like a normal sized ship, compared to another lego ship, it would be great if we all should build ''big'' ships like this, however there are obstacles: amount of parts, you will need lots of parts for this size of ships, and offcourse, you need proper skills for it...

bricklink has been my best friend for a year now, and now with this "lego factory"...ah life is good

26, there's enough cannons to fill all the ports on the gun deck.  I'll need another 8-12 for the top deck.   I've got 16 marines (red soldiers), and about 80 sailors ready to man her and about 30 some french (blue soldiers) for them to skirmish with while ashore.  Although my kids just boarded the Challenger and wiped out the crew with IG88, Count Dooku, Boba Fett and a couple imperial troops (stormtroopers), it was quite a massacre, muskets and sabres against lasers and lightsabres ekk! Kids just have no sense of historical accuracy.

That pic is about a year old so the design has changed abit, I originally had a flat 2x2 round on the end but discovered that leaving it off made the end look more "deeper" hence more real.

Yup I used one row of inverted 3x2 slopes, then two rows or 2x2 inverted slopes but the next section I used Aaron's secret patent idea for ship hull design.  its actually not a secret its just really hard to explian...I'll post some pics on Brickshelf shortly but again there will be a delay while the moderators make sure my boats exposed secrets include just lego :)

My initial reaction to a project this size is that its too big for my liking. This ship, however, shows how a large ship can be made, while still keeping it playable. Unlike that massive Galleon in another post, this ship looks great and has open access to most areas of the ship.

So far, I like it, and I usually hate bigger ships!

Love the homemade cannons

Its even got a fairly large pull off section right between the main and mizzen masts just aft of the stairs below for easier access for us "larger" kids.  Also planning on having the aft cabin slide off too.
