The Unofficial Mafia Handbook

Recommended Posts

In the past week I was busy creating a Visual Mafia Handbook. It includes descriptions of basic, and some advanced roles with pictures, and a short storyline to go with them. I still have plans for more Roles, I shall update it from time to time.

Roles

5610133561_2b52b44f30_m.jpg

The Town

Protector (also known as Doctor or Angel)

5610134107_dbc59dc616_m.jpg

The killer approached it's victim slowly, ready to strike... Player A let out a silent scream...

But suddenly a mysterious figure jumped in, knocking the gun out of the murderers hand!

Defeated, the terror of the night crept back into the shadows...

The Protector is one of the basic Mafia roles. The Protector can decide to protect one player every night, and sends his\her name to the Host. Then the player cannot be harmed. There might be modifications, like not being able to protect the same person to nights in a row.

Other protective roles:

-Bodyguard: Dies while protecting.

-Jailkeeper: Blocks target as well.

-Paranoid doctor: Same as Jailkeeper, but the player doesn't know about it.

-Insane doctor: 50% chance of killing patient. (Not told.)

-CPR doctor: Kills patients if they are not targeted. (Not told.)

-Naive doctor: Always unsuccessful. (Not told.)

Roleblocker

5610133939_5a74fac45e_m.jpg

Who will the killer kill tonight? -Wondered the people of the town. They waited in fear...

But the murderer didn't come, and nobody was taken that night.

Few knew that somebody had tied up the killer in the cellar...

The Roleblocker can stop a targeted player from using his/her night action, by sending the players name to the Host. It exists in Mafia form too.

Investigator (also known as Cop, Seer)

5610134255_1fd7268ae6_m.jpg

You look through Player B's possessions, looking for something suspicious...

You haven't found anything, and are about go give up and proclaim the person innocent...

...Then suddenly you spot it! A bloody knife! Now you know for sure that the person is scum...

The Investigator can determine a players allegiance, by sending his/her name to the Host.

This role has got lots of variations, like:

-Paranoid investigator: Always gets guilty results.

-Naive Investigator: Always gets innocent results.

-Insane Investigator: Always gets the oposite result.

-Random Investigator: Gets random results.

At the start of the game, players don't know if they're Normal, Paranoid, Naive, or Insane.

Watcher

5625162324_5cdc894868_m.jpg

Player F always liked to watch people, see what they were doing... He was a real maniac,

always taking photos of his prey. But he hated the Mafia so he helped the Town. He was watching Player H's

house and was about to give up on seeing anything when he saw Player I climbing through the window.

"Got it!" he said to himself, and went home triumphant...

The watcher has the ability to target someone, and see who targets that player at night. However he can not see what the person was doing there, nor can he see if his target moved at night.

The Tracker

5625162180_b2fb81dc87_m.jpg

Player J followed Player K down a dark ally... He was careful to stay in the shadows, always alert.

If K spotted him he could be dead by the sunrise... As the figure went down the dark street he broke

into player L's house, and came out a bit later. J went home and wondered what K did to L...

The tracker has the Ability to track a player and see where he/she went that night. However he cannot see what the

player did there.

Vigilante

5616490704_f08db8dc45_m.jpg

The night killer roamed the streets, searching for new prey... Suddenly another figure

appeared in front of him, gun in hand.

"Who are you?" asked the killer, trying to appear brave.

"Your Doom" said the figure and murdered the murderer with one shot.

The Vigilante is the Town killer. At night he/she sends the name of the next victim to the Host. Vigilantes often have restrictions, like a limited number of bullets. In rare cases a Day Vigilante appears, who can only kill at day.

Paranoid Gun Owner

5627092020_af05edc534_m.jpg

Player N couldn't sleep. He tried and tried, but always felt that he wouldn't wake up in the morning, or wake

up with a murderer grinning in his face... At midnight he heard noises. He heard the soft steps of somebody approaching... But N didn't want to die... He grabbed his pistol out of the drawer, and shot the approaching figure

in the chest...

The Paranoid Gun Owner will kill the first person who attacks him at night, (sometimes only if they try to kill him) regardless of their allegiance. Sometimes he/she dosen't know about this and is told that he/she is a normal townie.

Firefighter (linked with Arsonist)

5610758320_953820ec5c_m.jpg

The fire was burning around player A's house... The town watched the upper floors collapse,

screaming and panicking. But suddenly... ...A figure appeared with player A in his arms.

He put her down on the grass and disappeared into the shadows...

The Firefighter is a protector who can only protect against the Arsonist. If the Arsonist dies the Firefighter becomes a normal Townie.

5610711888_032c7255d5_m.jpg

The Mafia

Mafia Goon

5610133803_f29b614880_m.jpg

A mysterious figure came out of the darkness, and moved towards Player C, Who was cowering with fear.

The figure wore a black suit and spoke to his victim in a whisper:

"You're not going to see the sunrise anymore. The Mafia has found you..."

The Mafia Goon is the basis of the Mafia. Each night one Goon (or a specialised Killer), can target a player that the Mafia decided to kill. Usually only one kill/night is allowed.

Mafia Boss

5610713534_f38d8b6c58_m.jpg

You are the powerful leader of the Mafia. You give the orders, you decide who to kill.

You hate the filthy townies, who try to mess up you're business, you decided to wipe them out...

The Mafia boss is the leader of the Mafia, he/she sends the Mafia's choices to the Host. He also usually appears innocent on investigation, but he may have other powers.

Usurper

5631498208_cc9f17bbbd_m.jpg

You joined the Mafia because of your lust for money and power, but you want more!

You have a secret plan to kill the boss of the Mafia, who you hate, and envy...

As his right hand man you know you'll become the boss if he dies...

The Usurper is a Mafia member whose has another objective, apart from defeating the Town: He must kill the Mafia boss. In some cases he becomes the boss after this. If the Mafia Boss is alive at the end of the game the Usurper loses.

Recruiter

5610713366_ab4132aa55_m.jpg

In the night, to dark figures met.

"I'm here. Where is the money, I want it before I join!"

"Here you go. Now you can join us and help destroy the meddling Townies... I love people as crooked as you...

The Recruiter can recruit (Turn Town to Scum) one player each night, by sending the players name to the Host. This (usually) only works on some people. (Decided by the Host)

Framer

5610758492_f1a97bfe56_m.jpg

After midnight a figure crept into Player D's room. Quietly and precisely he slipped a knife out of his pocket

and placed it in D's cupboard. Then he crept back into the darkness, his job done...

After the Cop searched D's room the next night, he went back home thinking he had found a Mafia Goon...

The Framer can select one person every night to frame. This means that if the

framed person is investigated, they will apear Guilty.

Janitor

5627091804_6c725577ed_m.jpg

As the Town woke up in the morning, they went to check the allegiance of Player M, who they lynched last evening.

But the body wasn't there. Nothing was left, the body had vanished. When they visited her house, all her stuff had

been removed. The Town was in confusion, now they would never know who M worked for...

The Janitor can clean up a players body after death, so that the town cannot see his/her allegiance. This is good for causing confusion, as the Town won't know if the deceased was helping them, or not.

5610712124_3edb9aa37d_m.jpg

Third Party Roles

Serial Killer

5610134471_7bbd274360_m.jpg

Suddenly a Hooded figure jumped out of the shadows, and walked towards Player E, a sword in his hand...

E screamed and tried to escape, but nothing worked... The figure drew out his sword and plunged

it into E's heart."You're mine" the madman screamed, and proceeded to dismember the corpse.

Then he crept away, leaving the bloody mess behind him...

The Serial Killer is a Neutral role, and isn't a part of either the Mafia or the Town.

His/Her win objections are to survive, and (in most cases) to kill a certain amount of people.

The Arsonist (linked with Firefighter)

5610134621_b9dd4a5764_m.jpg

A Hooded Figure arrived at Player G's house. Grabbing a hose, he sprayed gasoline on

the house, then dropped a match... ...The house burned in a raging inferno, destroying everything. By the morning the only thing left of G was a pile of blackened bones...

The Arsonist is a type of Serial Killer.

Only the Firefighter can protect you from the Arsonist's attacks.

Multiple Mafias

5627091906_b4820f2cf7_m.jpg

The Town heard shots in the night... In the morning they found a black suited corpse, a dead member of the Mafia.

There was much rejoicing, but the people were suspicious too, who could have killed him? Later they found a gun,

usually used by the Mafia. Who could have killed him? His own friends? Or maybe another Mafia...

A game can have more then one Mafia's. They have to defeat the town and all other gangs. The town will also have to

kill all the Mafias to win. Different Mafias often kill differently, showing that they're different.

Werewolf

5627041461_b84193b5f6_m.jpg

The Village heard a howl, and then a deafening scream... There people ran in all directions as a huge hairy figure appeared,

blood dripping of his sharp teeth, and the mangled body of Player P in his claws. None of the villagers had ever seen

such a gruesome sight... Something had to be done, or the beast would murder them all...

The Werewolf is the basic element of werewolf themed Mafias. He/She usually starts alone (Not always), and has the abilities of killing and converting. Some games have both a Werewolf and a Mafia.

Hunter

5643616788_34f22cc627_m.jpg

The village was in terror, as the Werewolf took a victim every night... This night too, the monster came,

snarling an showing its teeth... But suddenly a cloaked figure came out of a bush and pointed a gun at the beast.

"Go to hell you filthy beast" He said and shot the Werewolf in the heart with a silver bullet...

The Hunter is a Neutral character, Who's task is to kill the werewolf (Or in none werewolf games someone else.) and survive. Once he/she kills the target, he/she will still have killing powers and continues as a serial killer.

Special

Lovers

5625107472_b269405b72_m.jpg

And though he was Mafia and she was Town, they knew it would be best together.

Then, leaving behind the bloody corpses of the two warring sides to rot, they walked away towards the red sunrise...

The Lovers are a pair of players, one a Townie, and the other a Mafia Goon. They can win with their own team, or together. If one dies the other one commits suicide the next night.

Good job, Alopex! I love the presentation, and I think you listed the most important roles. A few suggestions for improvement, though:

- You should move "vanilla townie" from the glossary to the list of roles, in my opinion, even though it is not an actual role itself.

- You have listed the few werewolf-related roles in blue, but you're missing the actual werewolf role.

- There are some grammar issues, like missing letters and capitalization, and wrong words like it's/its, then/than etc. You should check through your text again.

Nicely done, Alopex.

Although you should include the night action investigator to the roles, as I think it's used rather common on EB.

Yet informative, I hadn't heared about the janitor role before.

Thanks fo the suggestions Sandy, the werewolf will be made soon.

I Wrote Vanilla Townie in the Glossary because some people might not know what the term "Vanilla" means.

Although you should include the night action investigator to the roles, as I think it's used rather common on EB.

Thanks! :classic: I'll add it when I have time.

When I played in my first Mafia game, I was a vanilla townie: couldn't do a thing. Though I still made it the farthest we could go.

But thanks for the handbook Alopex! This is quite handy to see all the rules. :classic:

Great guide! I thought that the only special roles were the doctor and the cop before I read this.

Great handbook, Alopex! You've included most of the widely used roles (even a few of the not-so-widely used ones) in a very nice compilation. There are a couple more roles I would suggest adding, such as Jester and Cultist, but those are basically bastard roles when used in their normal states.

This is very well-done. Maybe I can memorize the difference between Watcher and Tracker with this.

Oh, come on, I don't see the difficulity at those roles. It's quite easy: The Tracker is the one, who...er...tracks people? *looks above* :look:

Well, I don't think I'll ever be able to remember them. For luck I don't have to, I can look them up at Mafiawiki or in this thread.:wink:

Oh, btw, in many games the serial killer has to kill everyone. Fortunately it's normally not used on EB like that.

I'm glad this has received a good reception, I think this is a good effort Alopex, and the vignettes are a neat addition. :sweet:

I should note that this is an unofficial thread and is not necessarily consistent/applicable to the current/future/unwritten EB rules/roles/definitions of EB Mafia. Do remember that all hosts like to use their own variations of roles; roles/names of roles in this thread may not reflect those in current/future games.

With that little administrative notice out of the way, please continue with your comments.

Nice work, Alopex. Of course, there's about a hundred other roles and even more variations out there, but I think you got most of the basic roles which is good for noobs (and even older players who need a refresher).

Some feedback for you (if you don't mind):

  • I would also include the mason recruiter, mason, usurper (related to the Godfather role) and siblings roles.
  • If you're including aliases and flavor roles, such as Angel, you should either make a color key or remove the blue, so people who don't know any better don't mistake it for an alliance color.
  • The Hunter role wasn't exactly like a vigilante, so I'm not sure if it's an official alias for that role.
  • You might want to mention a variation of the arsonist where they "prime" their targets one at a time each night before detonating and killing all of them at once. If the firefighter targets someone who's been primed, they are longer primed.
  • I may be wrong on this, but I always thought the Mafia Goon was the equivalent of a vanilla townie, and it was the hit-man who did the killing.
  • You may want to clarify that the host is considered the "moderator". The difference between the host/game moderator and the forum moderator (Draggy, other EB staff) might be confused.

---

Again, thanks for doing this. I really like how you did those little vignettes, they add a lot to this handbook, and differentiate it from the mafiawiki role guide.

[*]I may be wrong on this, but I always thought the Mafia Goon was the equivalent of a vanilla townie, and it was the hit-man who did the killing.

I think this is depending on how the host defines. Goon may refer to a mobster in general, or mean a vanilla mobster. In some games, such as Infection or Bloodbricks the scum may decide who executes the kill. In standart games one of the mobsters just tells the host their decision, with nobody being particular killer. The hitman became just a good option for more advanced games with new roles such as the blockers, the trackers and watchers.

Also, in other games "hitman" can not only mean a killer, but also a specialist killer who can override blockings or protection or such (sorry if I'm mistaing "hitman" and "ninja" at this point).

This is a wonderful addition to the Wargames and Mafia forum, Alopex! It's bound to come in handy for all manner of players. I was going to suggest including masons, but I see that's been done already.

This is a very good idea Alopex, thanks for taking the time and effort to do this unofficial handbook of mafia roles. I think this will be very useful to future mafia students and even current mafia players as well. I sure learned some interesting new stuff here, like the concept of Lovers. Although I do agree with Draggy that variations in roles widely exist, so what you've put in this handbook may be varied from game to game. Still, keep updating this further, nice work so far!

Oh, I also forgot to mention--Jailkeeper is an alias of a Paranoid Doctor. There's also an Insane Doctor who usually has a 50% chance of killing his patient, and a Naive Doctor who is unsuccessful in protecting his patients. The doctors are always told that they are Sane in their role PMs.

To give you an example, Ricecracker was a paranoid doctor in Werewolf. He was trying to help the town, but unknowingly hurt it by protecting (and blocking) Draggy from giving iamded silver bullets before he died.

You mean 'from receiving iamded's silver bullets', right?

It has the same effect, but they aren't exactly the same, as the jailkeeper knows he's a jailkeeper, but the paranoid doctor thinks he was a doctor.

Sorry for being a smartass.

Absolutely lovely! The coloring is awesome, and you've done a fantastic job making tons of different black and white figures who appear as the roles you're explaining them to be. If that makes sense. I feel like it doesn't. The doctor looks like a doctor, the mobster like a mobster, etc, and you did it will good black and white figures.

Then there's also the CPR doctor, who kills the person if they haven't been attacked.
