[KEY TOPIC] Official Lego sets made in LDraw

Totaly Wicked: Your image for 3742-1: Tender seems to take forever to load, at least on my connection. It seems awfully large for an ordinary .png image? Just wondering why it would be so large. :sceptic:

It is 187 kB for me, a normal size for a PNG image.

Classsic Space – 889 - Radar Truck

It seems that a piece is missing: the plate 3794 under the Airtanks!

Look at this image (it is a bit large  ).

Odd, because it only shows the very top of the image for me and it takes forever to load. None of his other images give me this problem. It must be something to do with my browser though. :look:

I had the same problem sometimes on other websites, I think it just a bugging IE9 :hmpf_bad:

6894 Invader [blacktron, 1987]

6894%20Invader.png

MPD file

(I'm working on a render, but the high amount of transparent elements is really slowing it down.)

Edit: Updated with rendered model. Previous image can be found here.

Is that screenshot straight out of LDraw/MLCad? It looks almost identical to LDD's output, except the transparent elements are so much more vivid and saturated than LDD. Even with stacking the .png four times before resizing, this is the best I can manage with LDD.

It's actually done using LDView, as this has better support for transparency than MLCad's native view. I like the effect that LDD has on elements behind the transparent part, but LDView allows me to define custom LDraw colours for use in the output image so can get them a little more accurate. It's also a lot quicker than using POV-Ray!

Once I start running up against missing parts that just cant be replaced with something similar in LDD I will make the effort to learn the 4+ programs that LDraw/MLCad/LDView/POVRay/etc... seems to be. Either way, free digital LEGO. Can't beat that!

30059 MTT [star Wars, 2012]

30059%20MTT.png

LDR file

According to Brickset, the set does not yet appear to have an official name, so I've used the official in-universe Star Wars name for the vehicle.

Absolutely! LDD and LDraw both cater to different audiences, I guess. I used to use LDraw, went on to LDD for quite a while, and then back to LDraw. I prefer the plethora of "old" parts in LDraw (for which LDD is starting to catch up), the ability to produce relatively decent renders, and I'm not inhibited by LDD's collision detection (which can be a pain sometimes).

I would say, however, that the only thing you'd really need to learn is something like MLCad, as it's used as a front-end to LDraw, and LDView is literally just a program designed to be able to view your virtual models in higher quality. There are also alternatives to MLCad, which suit people who don't like the way MLCad works. The POV-Ray stuff is just something you can do, and is not required at all.

Incidentally, a question for legolijntje: I've created some LDraw models of the minikit models from the LEGO Star Wars/LEGO Batman games which, although not all released as real sets, could be considered semi-official. Would you recommend posting them here, a different thread in the "LEGO Digital Designer and other digital tools" forum, or posting them within their own respective areas (such as the Eurobricks Star Wars forum for the LEGO Star Wars models)?

That's a good question...

I think we have to open another topic in the digital forum here. I do accept Club models and other models with official Lego instructions (even when they never became a real set, like club or Build Together), but this game items are just from the game and don't have any instructions.

It's the same with ldd, some time ago, there was a topic here with game models made in ldd, but I can't find it anymore. I think it's better to do the same, to keep this topic a bit "on-topic"

I have to go now, so I think I will make it tonight, or, do you want to make one? If you want, you can make such a topic, and become his indexer, I'm very busy at the moment with makin the current updated index, Brickset reviews and "an secret, but not so secret Brickset thingie"

So, your choice :classic:

@TotalyWicked

The quality of the last screenshot seems to be improved. Did you used LDView?

Yeah... It's just a screen cap from LDView.

EDIT:I’ll am going to update all of my models with DLView renders
