Admiral Croissant

20 gun frigate 'Vesta'

I must comment again. as ive had a bit more time to look at the pics. Very impressive! I can see a lot of effort has gone into this. I really like the stern design and windows, and the captains cabin looks excellent in the pic with the natural light, that picture of a ship is a great detail! A damn fine job all around! You must build another one now :pir_laugh2:

I'm glad that you (being a MOC-expert) like it :pir-sweet:

I think I'll wait a couple of weeks before I start a new project, but I'm definitely planning to build a two decked (and minifig scale)ship.

Yeah, if I make it minifig scale next time, I can put a lot more things like that in it (more lanterns, working wheel/capstan).

I would also like to make cannons which can fire with some smoke or something like that if it's possible.

Anyway, I can't wait to start with a new ship. A larger scale gives much more opportunities for these things, and for more detail :pirate:

True, but it brings new challenges as well! Bows, sterns, masts, yardarms... they all offer new challenges when you don’t have the nice premade pieces to work with.

I think you can do it though! It is just a different style of building, and the work on the Vesta proves you have the chops to make it work!

The whole thing looks fantastic, but I especially like the captain's cabin. I wonder if there would be any way to simulate a "moonlight" shot.

If that would be a Dutch ship, I'd be more then happy to help you out. :pir-grin:

It probably is... :pir-wink:

So you 2 finally agree of helping me rebuild the fleet of 1.000, sail up the Thames and get Joey Lock? :pir-grin:

Back on topic, after Legowworld I'm definitely going to post more feedback Admiral C!

Wow, great ship, you should build an entire fleet of smaller ships to go with it. (Because big ships always look cooler next to smaller ships.)

It would make a wicked display piece.

Once again, good job!!!

That is one excellent ship!

I love the color scheme and the whole shape of that thing...

The photos could have been better though, they are an understatement if you ask me.

Cheers

and

Happy Building!

i'm really enchanted by the way you made those windows on the stern. i'm trying to figure something with the 1x1x1 brick modified "headlight" but i don't like very much the way it comes.

may i ask how you did that? or is that a window frame with a particular glass?

once again..Great moc!

Like I said on the bottom of the first page, I used this window (in black) and put some decals on it for the black 'lattice works'.

The photos could have been better though, they are an understatement if you ask me.

Somewhere on page 1, I said I had made a few bigger pictures. You can see them here (only the last 7 images).

Thanks for all the other comments as well. Cheers :pir-classic:

It was great to finally see her in the flesh, she's a real masterpiece!

Your rigging system is also quite clever and worked way easyer then I had imagined.

Though minor, I already gave my points of improvement.

I know it's been a while since I last posted here, but when I came across this I felt a bit awkward I missed it first :pir-classic:

What I like most about this magnificent creation is the overall appeareance which is just unlike every other Lego ship, maily due to the extremely detailed rigging. The "Vesta" really looks like the "Surprise" from Master and Commander for a moment, that is before one recognises the giant French flag of course! The hull is super flat and elegant which is achieved through both a low gundeck and using a long 6 midsections. And of course there are also a ton of details, esspecially on the deck that also inspired me a lot.

Nonetheless some sort of a horizontal curving would have added something to the hull. Besides I'm not too conviced by the method you want to access the gundeck with. It looks like guns and minifigures could easily fall in there and it would be a mess to retrieve them. :pir-sceptic:

I'm also missing stairs on the hull to climb from a boat.

It has always been clear that your rigging would eventually become something outstanding, but it just turned out ridiculously awesome! :pir-wub:

I'd be quite curious to see how it works. By the way, your masts look really nice too, I tried to copy them first, but ended up with a different solution that now mostly shares the look and I think it's a bit better, also in terms of stability.

However there is one thing I must ask you: please, please take and share some more pics... possibly with some background or photoshopping?

I mean this is such an amazing creation, we don't see many of these...

For instance in the very first picture one cannon is not run out :cannon: , and there is almost no other pic showing all of her beauty. :imperialguard_commander1:

One thing that is really mindblowing is how your ship grew and developed during these 1,5 years of building. Remember where you started? Maybe this development is most impressive about this ship:

Such a long reply! Let me comment it :pir-classic:

First of all, thanks for all the positive talking.

The "Vesta" really looks like the "Surprise" from Master and Commander for a moment..
Good that you see it that way, I've always tried to keep close to that ship. I have a book about the movie with a lot of detailed pic's that helped me a lot.
Nonetheless some sort of a horizontal curving would have added something to the hull.
I agree with you. I tried to give it a better curve on the downside of the line, but the top could have been better.

But I've learned from it and I'll try to do it better on my next ship.

Besides I'm not too conviced by the method you want to access the gundeck with. It looks like guns and minifigures could easily fall in there and it would be a mess to retrieve them.
I didn't have any problems with it yet. I can remove those plates on the whole lenght and on both sides.

So if something goes anywhere, I can always give it a push from the opposite direction.

It seems like one of the best ideas to me, to combine both modularity and strenght.

I'm also missing stairs on the hull to climb from a boat.
I understand that. It does have those stairs. But I made the plates 'protrude'(?) 1 plate (or 1/3 stud).

If you look very closely, you can see it, but I'll try to make better pictures of it in the future.

By the way, your masts look really nice too, I tried to copy them first, but ended up with a different solution that now mostly shares the look and I think it's a bit better, also in terms of stability.

Ok, My masts won't break either, they are completely filled up with pins and hoses and secured by the rigging.

But I'm curious how you did it, it's hard to see on the pictures.

I'd be quite curious to see how the rigging works.
However there is one thing I must ask you: please, please take and share some more pics... possibly with some background or photoshopping?

As soon as I have time, I'll make better pictures of the ship and I'll try to show how all the rigging works.

One thing that is really mindblowing is how your ship grew and developed during these 1,5 years of building. Remember where you started? Maybe this development is most impressive about this ship:

:pir_laugh2: Yeah it looked pretty awful back then. Still, you can spot some techniques that ended up in my final product.

Again, thanks for the feedback, I'll post better pictures in the future.

Time for some more/better pictures:

Some interior shots:

The chimney: (I couldn't make a better picture of it).

v6.jpg

v11.jpg

v13.jpg

Wind blowing in the sails (I put a fan behind it :pir-classic: )

v16.jpg

v7.jpg

And finally, how the sails work.

First the studding sails:

v20.jpg

v22.jpg

I think it's obvious from the pictures, otherwise don't hesitate to ask.

Now how to hoist/lower the yards:

v25.jpg

v26.jpg

v28.jpg

Here you can also see the black rope around the sail.

I've made ropes on the right lenght for every sail and at the ends tied to a bush which I can put on the yards (made of axles).

v27.jpg

v29.jpg

And how to brace:

Once they are public, you can see more pictures here.

Thanks for watching, feel free to comment :pir-sweet:
