Here's my LDD-only entry.

It's the big scary robot, MAXIMILLIAN, from the movie, The Black Hole. I wish I could buy it in this color scheme, and confirm that the design works in real life, but a few parts aren't currently available in red to purchase. I've got a VINCENT model in LDD, too, but they're, unfortunately, not in scale with each other.

Hope you like it.

As a Black Hole fan, I really like this one. I tried sending you a PM to ask if I could use it in a comic page if I ever think one up that's Black Hole themed, but you have messaging turned off or something. If you do let me use it, be sure to provide me with a link so I can give you the proper credit. (Like if you have a blog or a public flikr or photobucket account where you show off your mocs.)

LDD+Physical Bricks Category.

Here is my entry. I was designing a ship beaming something up form the ground. It changed heavily while making it with physical bricks but the LDD version really helped me.

This is my LDD only model. It's pretty much your everyday bus that takes you across the galaxy. I made the ship in yellow, M-Tron colors, Blacktron colors, black with normal clear windows, white, and even pink for my 7-year-old cousin, But the only one using real colors is the normal black one.

The back has two engines sticking out of the back, but It's hard to see

4754744336_776d89460f.jpg

The top is easily removable.

4754744510_da8e485bed.jpg

Also the gated part of the bottom moves down much like the millennium falcon does, although this is very difficult to accomplish on ldd (it's easy to do in real life, though). Retractable landing gear is also included.

Ok shockingly enough I barely scraped through being able to have an LDD model+real bricks creation for this contest, so without further ado, my Mech, Deathstrike class:

First the LDD:

EJNZDQRCCN.jpg

And now for the bricks!

6H8TOOD4W5.jpg

7MW0A0VCLC.jpg

And thats my entry in a nutshell. Please note, the troops aren't actually part of it really, thats just a base plate I thought it would look cool on for the pic. Better at least then just wood^^" Also, no idea why, but I added yellow accents to the real thing, just liked how it looked, and used my favorite type of window shield stead of the blocky one..(sorry arc fighter)

P.s, in case no one notices it above, my category is LDD + physical bricks

LDD and Physical Bricks

Blackrton 3 Accipiter Attack Fighter

This contest was great because I do the majority of my building using LDD in the design process then eventually convert my models to actual bricks. Due to limited space where I currently live I have no room for my physical bricks... LDD provides me the creative outlet to design what I want with the option to eventually build the actual model when I get my hands on the pieces.

The LXF file

In the year 2013, Human survivors of a massive war between their kind and a race of aliens known as The Conquerors roam the floating remains of their destroyed homeworld. However, many wonders have been unearthed from the destruction caused by the aliens when they invaded in 2012, some of those wonders are the answers to many infamous mysteries. A group of brave adventurers; Archeologist Steven West, Cyborg Navigator Eric McGulligan, Map-Maker Vincent Arduous and Veteran Fighter-Pilot Patricia Flennsdale are searching for an ancient Mayan structure known as the Temple of Omega. A legendary relic within the temple holds the secret to Humanity's survival. Unfortunately, a small battalion of Conquerors lead by an evil commander have tracked the foursome down, and plan to stop them from unlocking the secret of the relic. Meanwhile, a Car-Copter unit and an enemy fighter-craft dogfight above the battle below, with the enemy having the upper hand.

Will the adventurers defeat the invaders, dodge the hidden traps, and save the remaining portion of Humanity?

Here's my LDD + Real Bricks Entry:

cimg1403.jpg

It's a LEGO model of the little, friendly, cuddly exo-suit from District 9 in a "playset" that echoes the typical LEGO toy adversarial pairing of "hero vs. villain".

cimg1400.jpg

The Multi-National United (MNU) security vehicle is a bit out of scale with the exo-suit, but I still like to see them together to kinda give a sense of size to the alien machine, and also suggest a bit of conflict and drama. The white MNU truck model features an articulated rear gate and passenger doors, with interior seats that recreates the white, hard-shell, bucket seats seen in the movie.

It's amazing to me that LEGOs are so well manufactured with such tight tolerances that just two studs' worth of friction at the hips can hold the weight of all that plastic. The exo-suit features ball joints at the shoulders and flexible elbows. The legs can be posed as well, and support the weight of the model with barely a quiver.

ds9_playset_lxf.jpg

I love the scene in the movie where the exo-suit snatches the rocket-propelled grenade from its trajectory, look for the RPG in the lxf jpg.

For the LDD only category:

Star (Justice) Base Dock:

4795098724_d299498549_b.jpg

Inspired by Kubrick's 2001: the dock of the big wheel.

I call it a "Star Base": a "moon base" in space.

4795098508_455eec1b28_b.jpg

This is what you see when you open the lxf-file:

It's centered next to a transparent head inside at the back. Look around or zoom out!

Can you guide the two ships in?

4795098306_f52fb72d27_b.jpg

It can be connected with this:

For the LDD+real bricks category:

Rotating Star (Justice) Base:

Based on the cyclotron of 2001's Discovery.

The lxf-file is centered on a transparent head in the middle of the ring.

Use the left/right arrow or move the mouse while holding the right button to see the inside rotate.

Zoom out to see the wheel in space.

It's just hit 11pm GMT on the 16th...

I thought I'd get in one more entry, although it's more for myself than the competition. This is my "LDD + Physcial Bricks" entry:

Space Station Nina

space_station_nina.jpg

space_station_nina_build.jpg

Other people have gone big and detailed with their entries, but since I'm a relative newbie to big builds, I thought about going the other way and creating something small and representative, similar to Zblj's entry.

This is actually a prototype for a space station design. I had the image of what I wanted to create in my head, but I was never able to draw it. Playing around in LDD gave me a lot of ideas and pieces to use, but it was actually trying to build it with real bricks that gave me the final design. (For instance, LDD didn't make it obvious that ball joints are affected by gravity, so I switched to using friction pegs for the side ports.)

Unfortunately one order from BrickLink didn't come through in time, so most of today was spent trying to find parts in my sorted and unsorted lots. Some substitutions, such as the tan-coloured corner piece and the dark gray tiles, had to be made.

Hi all, here is my entry for the LDD Contest:

Category: LDD only

H.M.S. Endeavour

After the failure of NASA Constellation program in the late 2000s, the shift towards private space transport providers for a majority of missions in the 2010s and President Biden's decision to stop funding all unilateral manned U.S. space missions in 2017, NASA and it's European, Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Canadian counterparts joined forces and following the successful example of the ISS, combined their manned deep space exploration programs. In 2019, the six states founded the International Space Exploration Consortium ISEC which was tasked with developing a re-usable space ship design for long-term manned deep space missions, using mostly proven technology. The goal of this project was to build ships capable of exploring Near-Earth objects and asteroids and gathering experience in flying missions to other planets.

The final design ISEC settled for was a space ship for a crew of three, built from four ISS-derived modules which could be assembled in space and easily fitted for different missions. As the ships were assembled in space and never needed to land on a planet or asteroid, they were re-usable and minimized launch costs as only fuel and non-recyclable supplies needed to be brought into space for a mission.

H.M.S. Endeavour was built as one of two identical manned deep space exploration ships (her sister ship being the Yuri Gargarin) between 2026 and 2029 while docked to space station ISS2. 33% of the funding came from ESA (which is therefore operating the ship). On July 1st 2029, she was commissioned and named "H.M.S. Endeavour" by British king William V (by symbolically breaking a bottle of champagne over a name-plate to be carried on the ship) in honour of James Cook's famous vessel. Her first two missions were trial missions in Earth-orbit and on a flight around the moon. Her third mission (and first research mission) led her to Asteroid 3753 Cruithne and she has since successfully completed four missions to moon and three long-term missions to the asteroids. Her current mission assignment will bring her to dwarf planet Ceres, the largest object in the Asteroid belt and is expected to mark both the furthest distance from Earth any human has every travelled and the fastest any human has ever travelled.

The ship's current crew is made up of Commander Johanna Wegener of Germany, Pilot Louis Brasfort of France and Scientist Alberto Unapiedra of Spain who are assisted by robot "Hally".

At the front of the ship, there is the EVAX module which contains an airlock and systems for vacuum and micro-gravity experiments (like the "front porch" which allows to expose experiments to space). Furthermore, a jet pack, a satellite and six navigation and assay probes for asteroid exploration can be launched from this module. The second module from the front contains the main computers, navigation and control systems, kitchen and some experiments, cooling and solar panels and short range radio equipment.

The third module is a storage module where supplies and experiments for the flight are stored and contains the docking port for docking at the space station or with the landing shuttle.

The fourth module is the habitation module where each astronaut has a small chamber with place for a sleeping bag, a folding seat, computer screen, reading light and space for personal effects. Each of those chambers is equipped with a small window. The habitation module also carries the long-range radio antenna for communicating with mission control on Earth.

Behind the habitation module lies the small service module which contains life support systems and secondary computers and is connected to the oxygen and fuel tanks.

At the very end is the engine module which is made up of the main ion engine which provides the main thrust for long flights in deep space and two strap-on orbital insertion boosters (OIBs) which help to bring the ship out of Earth's orbit and into it's mission orbit.

In order to allow astronauts to visit the surface of an asteroid, Endeavour also carries a small, fully autonomous shuttle (named "Galileo") which can land two astronauts on the surface of an asteroid. Due to the minimal (or non-existing) gravity on asteroids the shuttle could be derived from the three-person Orbital Manoeuvring and Rescue Shuttles (OMRS) developed for the ISS2 space station and shares the same outside characteristics. It was however equipped with different life-support systems and software to allow two astronauts to live in it for several days for asteroid landings. In case of an emergency during preparation or launch, the shuttle can still be used to bring the crew safely back to Earth, though.

About the model

Well, I really wanted to design a futuristic but still realistic Lego space ship for quite some time as most of the Lego space ships tend to be either super-sci-fi or not really spaceworthy (as in seaworthy...). The model is mostly snot (but then again, where is "top" in space? ;-) ), made up of 2290 parts (not counting minifigs, which are in a separate file), would weigh 1.7 kilos and be roughly 80 cm long (if I'm not wrong). The shuttle, rocket pack, satellites and the tank/engine section can be removed and the air lock and service module doors can be opened and closed. And without some printing, it's built using only bricks available in Design-by-me mode which means the model can actually be ordered (though it would set me back a whopping 350€).

I should also note that I used G. Shaw's amazing rocket pack with only small alterations and was inspired by the late, great nenn for the design of the ion engine.

This is my LDD + Real Brick entry. The concept was a squat little cloak-capable starfighter based around two of the webbed radar dishes representing the "cloak emitters." I figured the smaller it was, the less energy it'd take to cloak it. I went with Blacktron I colors because they look good, and because I just got one of those fancy new Blacktron torsos from the Raid VPR set.

cloak_fighter_01.jpg

Front view showing off the weapons and the reminders that the craft can go both up and down.

cloak_fighter_02.jpg

The propulsion system.

cloak_fighter_04.png

Another view with the top open to show off the comfy chair for the pilot. The decal is, of course, not the one I used in the real brick version.

cloak_fighter_05.png

And this LDD view allows you to see the controls. Unlike the decorated tile in the previous image, the controls in this image are the same as used in the real brick version.

cloak_fighter_06.png

This last one shows what the cloaking device itself looks like when it isn't covered by the bottom emitter dish. The fact that it also let me conveniently mount the bottom dish on upside down is purely a coincidence.

A few more images and the lxf file available in my Brickshelf Gallery.
