I was watching an old rerun of Get Smart season five, and in the back of my head thought about how many people think Get Smart is merely some movie made a couple years ago.

That thought drives me crazy every time.

But it's true; ask five people from 'this' generation what Get Smart is, and most (if not all) will say it's this stupid movie. The remake was a terrible idea in my oppinion. Not only did it try to incorporate some lame now-a-days humor in with the old jokes, but it left a taste in new fan's mouth that's different from the old classic taste. I mean, the old 1960's era of humor was hillarious. But lately you get terrible commedies everywhere you look.

So this is for you true fans, who grew up with the real cone of silence and charecters such as the Craw and the Admiral, not the movie-only 'fans' who think Fang is an adorable little puppy and Stalker has a beard. This is where we can share jokes and favorite episodes, whether it be Ironhand or Too Many Chiefs.

To those who are reading this, and are some of the above 'movie-only fans' I have one thing to say. "Sorry about that."

I'd be interested in knowing where you got this concept of "real fans" from and your notions of "this" generation, as both statements are borderline total generalisations. I've yet to meet anyone regardless of age who doesn't know of the original series, and I know many others that are of "this" generation that not only love the old series but have collections of them.

Apologies for sounding rude, but your comment to me comes across as absurdly elitist and the typical cliche of the "young people these days don't know quality" gripe.

That said, I was not a fan of the recent film.

Hmm... I only know 3 people under 20 that have ever heard of the series. I know, I know, but my defination of 'real' Get Smart fans are poeple that have actually watched the series. Sorry if I offended you.

I watched the series as soon as I heard there was to be a film with acting talent I like watching. The series was very funny, but slightly stilted at times. I did enjoy the visual puns and my father, my younger brother and myself laughed a lot as we watched. Mel Brooks is a comedy genius.

I then watched the film. It was very funny, more modern and equally enjoyable. Once again, my father, my younger brother and myself had a great time watching it. Even now I can send my brother into fits of laughter with "It was the mushroom cloud for me".

Both do exactly what they set out to do: Entertain.

I wouldn't say I was fanatical about it, but if they do a boxset of the series, or another film I will certainly watch it.

Brilliant show, funny in the way that funny should be, on different levels for different people. It could have easily just parodied James Bond episode after episode, but instead if took on a variety of other influences and frequently did the unexpected in hilarious ways. I haven't seen many shows that could pull off the same thing (the absurdly hilarious "Sledgehammer!" in the 80's, perhaps), and absolutely none today.

I have the boxset of the series and it's great, plenty of extras and good quality transfers.

I haven't seen the movie, though I had at least heard it was better than the ill-fated Andy Dick series that lasted a whopping 12 episodes or something.

I rarely think the modern version of anything is as good as the original (Wild Wild West, anyone?), but I do intend to give this movie a try if for nothing more than the bit of nostalgia that I hope it contains.

Interesting, must be a situation thing. And don't worry about offending me, I'm just really angry recently so I apologise. But I will argue that there is a greater percentage of fandom amongst younger people than you realise.

I don't have the full box set, but I do have the idividual seasons. I just watched "I am Curiously Yellow" again today.

I agree, the movie was good in it's own right. I myself have the special edition with the added joke feature. I just think it took a little away from the series.
Persoanlly, I loved the "He's married to my sister" joke.

Hmm... an old friend of mine has the series collection for that. I wouldn't mind seeing an episode or two, just to know what it's like. Though I agree- the originals are usually the best. Remakes generally wear away from the original, in such a fashion The Clone Wars could have. I mean, it was agood movie, but reviews were terrible. I myslef collect World war 2 movies...

I am a fan of both the original series and the 2008 movie. I think that each of them had a unique spin on the concept and bring something different to the table. I don't think they are really comparable considering the long gap in the time they were made and the different style in which they were made. And age has nothing to do with good taste.

"I AM THE CLAW" "The Craw?" "THE CLAW!"

Seriously though, I know how you feel. I own the first and second seasons, and compared to those, the movie is terrible.

Just like with anything (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc) there are different versions for different generations. Today the Original Star Trek Series looks clunky and kind of stupid. But to the people that grew up with it there is a good chance it is still their favorite. Same thing with Star Wars (except to a lesser extent I think). Just because people like one version above others doesn't make them less of a fan.

Hey TOS is still the best! sorry it's funny though because I grew up ont it through repeats rather then when it first aired and even though the special effects are'nt the best it still has place in my heart.

Oh BTW they recently just did a remastered version of it with improved special effects (CGI enterprise, colonies are bigger, planets different, more federation ships are shown).
