With the recent release of Space Police III my view on Lego space has changed. With (in my opinion) the disapointing small ships in the new line I decided to revisit the previous 2 Space Police Lines. In doing so I found a small, Impulse like set: 6813 Galactic Chief. As I no longer have the Box or Instructions the images provided are courtesy of Peeron and Bricklink. Because I got this second hand there are two pieces missing (a dark green visor and white "Minifig Loudhailer"). They have been replaced with the same parts in different colors, trans-light green and black.

Name: Galactic Chief

Set: 6813

Theme: Space Police II

Year: 1993

Pieces: 23

Minifigs: 1

Price: USD $3.00

The Box

Interestingly the box does not include one of the pieces included in the instructions. Which one? The white "Minifig Loudhailer" (This One):look:

The Front of the Instructions

Same picture as the box art, still missing his weapon/megaphone.

Minifig from the Front

The Minifig is your average SP guy but he does come with many parts, a helmet, visor, air tank, and, epaulettes. I do like the detail on the torso though

The Minifig from the Back

Not much to see here as there is no back printing. Can't complain though because there was none back then.

The Minifig Without His Helmet

Interesting face, is it just me or does this guy look a little feminine? Great detail on the face though with the head set and whatever that thing is on the right.

The Build

3607700565_e071a3a19b.jpg

Not much of a build here because it's only 23 pieces, but compared to SPIII impulse sets it is rather large.

Interesting Parts

Even though it is small it does come with some interesting parts. The green windscreen is rather useful as is the engine. I also like the tail piece as it is somewhat rare now. The printed slope is great too, no stickers like todays Space Police.

The Front View of the Ship

I like this ship but it could be improved with some landing gear or weapons. Maybe thats what the thing on the roof is.

The Side of the Ship

As you can see its a pretty solid ship, especially for its low price.

The Back

3607701161_aff8a7ff3d.jpg

This is a little boring as theirs not much to see here. I think if this were a set now it would have a sticker here.

The Cockpit

Here is your very own Galactic Chief demonstrating the only movable part of this set, the cockpit.

Inside

Once inside the ship the Chief realizes that there is no way to control this ship! How much would it have been to add a printed control tile? This is the only thing holding the set back in my opinion.

Overall

3608515546_531e857c5f.jpg

The set in it's entirety. A great addition to any fleet.

Overall Rating

Minifig: 9/10 He (or she) is a great addition to any police force and is made up of many parts.

Parts: 8/10 There are not many but they are rather large and useful.

Price: 10/10 Compared to todays sets $3 is great !

Playability: 8/10 It's a space ship so it can be played with without too much imagination. The cockpit is great but the ship has no controls.

Overall: 9/10 Based on the scorecard. What do you think?

It is definetly much nicer than the current impulses but that is mainly an issue of price in general so I can't really blame SP3 totally. Squidman escape (a 6$ set) is probably the closer modern equivalent.

This was an okay set for the price, although some other themes had better small sets like 6815 or 6850. I like the fact that it has a windscreen, but there should have been a control panel and a better place to put the gun/megaphone thing.

The main reason to get this was the police chief. This set is probably the reason he is still fairly common on BL and ebay, since he only appeared in the Galactic Mediator otherwise.

Regardless of the onset of criticism of SP3, Squidman Escape is far superior to this set. It comes with two awesome figs and the little covercraft is much more streamlined. Still, it's not bad. Good review.

It also costs more though, even accounting for inflation. $3 in 1992 is around $4.50 today, and that set is $7.

$5.99. It's only 7 at TRU.

Still though, LEGO prices have gone up all over the board.
