Corvus Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Sorry for the delay between Skrall and now. I've just been procrastinating and not doing anything... *ahem* I picked Gresh up at TRU last week, and I must say, he's a great set. The box: Gresh has a very nice box. It's beautiful, colorful, and matches the whole Jungle theme nicely. On the back, it depicts Gresh and his Agori companion standing in front of a stone building, like the other boxes. Oddly enough, Gresh's Bio-code is M41UMZ... Leet-speak for Malum? Odd. EDIT: Ah. Printing error. The correct code is GR35H1. -JINZO The spike-balls, or Thornax, are rubbery with a black plastic ring around it to fit into the launcher. The set only comes with one, so if you lose it, you're screwed. I've already lost one... The ball fits into the launcher like so. I like the launchers- they're small and aren't massive and ugly like those of years past, and shoot by squeezing the launcher. They fly about a yard and bounce, which is pretty nice. They don't need to shoot across a room, do they? The game counter. It's a nice little piece, even if it's useless. The new game features shooting two Bionicle and when a hit lands, you count down a number. You get to the skull, you die. Pretty simple. The new head. Unfortunetely, my picture-taking didn't turn out so well here, and you can't really see much detail. It looks like Iron Man, like others have said, which I think is awesome. Gresh has an awesome mask. His eyes are very bright, and the mask is a decent size, not too big, but not too small like Malum's. Gresh's build is a pretty simple, and isn't really all that different from those of last year's, or the years before that. However, he does have claws build into his shoulders, and a dark green torso piece like Jaller's. The shoulder spikes push the torso out one stud, and make him look less skinny, though give him unsightly gaps: Gresh's new hands are great. They look good even without weapons, and offer some interesting new poses: He does look very buff, doesn't he? He looks pretty good so far, except that his legs are too skinny and his arms are too long. Gresh has some extremely useful weapons. They can multifunction as arm blades, swords, a shield, or a staff thing. Take a look: Side shot: Unfortunetely, you have to put the armor pieces on the back of his arms, or else they can't bend more than 90 degrees. Like most canister sets, his back is nothing too original. Full gallery here when public. Well, Gresh is a pretty great set. He's not much different from sets of old, but he's a step in the right direction with a thicker torso and not extremely skinny. However, his legs are extremely skinny (I've already modded this, maybe pics later) and his arms are too long. I'd like to see TLC using the shorter linking pieces for the arm, which I can't properly name... the one that's 1 stud long, not three. Anyway, Gresh has some great colors on him and some cool weapons. I'd reccomend getting him. Note: Please tell me what you thought of the picture quality. Too dark? Too anything? I'm experimenting with a new light tent and I'd like some feedback. Quote
VBBN Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Darn, beat me to it. If you have vorox, could you hold off on doing his review? I would like to do one for him, if you don't mind. Anywho, Gresh. So when I fist saw him, I wasn't impressed, a somewhat old design, nothing new. But then when I got him, I loved him. He is a true jungle feeling set.His mask is awesome as well. All the lime is welcome. And finally we get a good green set. Lewa Phanny from last year was crap. Nothing was a true air color for him, really, way to much gray. And who doesn't love those hands in dark green? Oh, and the code on his canister was a printing error, I believe you can find the correct one somewhere on BZPower. Quote
Takanuva-nui Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 He looks like a great set. The color scheme, blades, mask, and torso armorare a must have. I dislike the skinny legs, the gaps in the torso, and the backwards arms, but these can be easily modded. Nice review. The lighting was fine by the way. The colors were vibrant, and the pictures were crisp. Well done. T-Nui Quote
Svelte Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Picture quality was excellent - really crisp with great colours. I am loving these reviews, Mr Mandalorian - I really like the 09 Bionicle lineup. Quote
Wrinkledlion X Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 The mask photo and the first photo featuring the weapons are both really cool. Quote
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Superb review, removed all my doubts of buying Gresh. Totally getting the vibe of a mystic jungle spirit from him. <3 -Ikk Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Oh, and the code on his canister was a printing error, I believe you can find the correct one somewhere on BZPower. Indeed, it is GR35H1 Nice pics, except for the occasional cut off foot. Thanks for the dynamic hand posing... how people can say the new fists suck and simply having ball sockets is somehow "good" is a concept WAY beyond me. Quote
dviddy Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) how people can say the new fists suck and simply having ball sockets is somehow "good" is a concept WAY beyond me. It's aesthetic. These new hands look goofy, and are too big lengthwise. The wrist joint is also way too far back. The ball sockets were smaller, thinner, and didn't look like they were trying too hard. I'm all for hands. But these new ones are eyesores. Edited January 6, 2009 by Darth Vader Quote
matanui911 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I'm no Reviewers guide teacher, but I loved the review! It was short and to the point, and the pictures said it all! They were amazing! Very informative review! I loved it! Quote

Well, I kind of feel they are appropriately cartoony for a toy line, and if nothing else they are certainly distinct. Quote

VBBN Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I think they are like that because of the "+" rod connection point in the hands. But yes, they look goofy. Quote
Corvus Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 Thanks, guys! I'm working on setup constantly. It looks like with this setup I'll have to work on the small stuff like pieces and minifigs... He looks like a great set. The color scheme, blades, mask, and torso armorare a must have. I dislike the skinny legs, the gaps in the torso, and the backwards arms, but these can be easily modded. Nice review. Well, the skinny legs and extremely long arms did get to me. I've modded the legs to look a bit thicker, but I don't have shorter arm pieces in black... Indeed, it is GR35H1Nice pics, except for the occasional cut off foot. Thanks for the dynamic hand posing... how people can say the new fists suck and simply having ball sockets is somehow "good" is a concept WAY beyond me. Thanks for the edit. The best thing about these hands is the ability to punch other figs. I didn't know the cut-off foot bothered some people. I'll work on that. They are just trying to make them look like the ones in the movies. I liked the hands in the first movies. Too bad we couldn't have 4-fingered hands here. Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 These new hands look goofy, and are too big lengthwise. I think you you just summed up every aspect of the Bionicle line in that one sentence. On a completely unrelated note, you weren't joking about that Tuma review video. Did... did... Smeag say, "shit" when they were talking first about Maxilos? (Or maybe The Maxx... hard to tell). I replayed that part like 10 times. Nikira says, "you, you.. you" right after he finishes. Quote

But it wouldn't surprise me. You wouldn't believe the creative editing Smeag had to do on our Brickfair Vultraz review to keep it somewhat clean. Plus, we recorded an entire Brickfair video segment for BZP, over the span of the few days we were there, but since we were just all being ourselves, it wasn't BZP appropriate. :( Man it was fun. Lepaka Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Great review! The pics were nice and the wording was good too. Quote
prateek Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 this is the best glatorian and i love that the weapon is multifunction Quote
Brickposter1748 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Great review!I love gresh he looks awesome! Quote

Hahah, nope! I said "icky." Unlike the Vultraz review, which (as the Deevs sad) required extensive cutting and editing, the lovely Nikira and I kept it clean in our Tuma review, so no worries in that one. <3 (PS: Out of curiosity, who "wasn't joking" about what? I don't see any other posts about the Tuma review preceding yours...) It's possible. I didn't pay that much attention, honestly. But it wouldn't surprise me. Makaru Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Good grief, some of the stuff I said is still in there, albeit barely audible. And yes, we will have to do another one of those gang reviews. Edited January 20, 2009 by Makaru Quote
LuxorV Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Great review. It's been ages since I got a Bionicle (have all the 6 Toa from second wave and a couple other sets), but these 2009 Glatorians are really good. You influenced my decision on the two to buy. Now guess the second! LuxorV Quote
