Hi there all, here's my entry for the Hot Rod contest, the 'Plymouth Rock', shortened to 'The Rock' by it's Goth Chick owner Abbey:

Posted Image

'The Rock' is actually a colaborative build between me and my good friend Ralph Savelsberg (a.k.a RalphS / Mad Physicist).  We had a nice Sunday afternoon/evening knock up this little beauty - I built the fron end as far back as the wind-shield and I also built Abbey.  I wanted to go for the chop-top streamliner sedan look and thought the red and yellow flame effect on a black car would look cool.  I named the car 'The Rock' because it seemed obvious to call a car built by Plymouth to be called the Rock.  (Check out US founding father history if you don't get the reference).

Ralph's help was invaluable, as though I felt comfortable building the car, I have to confess to knowing next to nothing about hot-rods.  anyway, here's a couple more pictures and a link to Flickr:

Wow, that is really, really cool. I love the flames, and I especially like that they're made out of plates. Nice work, and good luck in the contest!   :-D

Wow that is a great car!!!
The technique you used for the flames is especially impressive because I imagine that it took extensive planning before and throughout the build.
The line of the car gives it that get up and go look.
Again great job on this!!

I think we spend more time selecting the wheels than we did on planning the flames, to be frank, although the bonnet gave us a little trouble.

Cheers,
Ralph

This is just awesome! Reminds me of 1949 Mercury which is far most popular "lead sled" car in the world. The flame job is top notch cool, I hope you guys don't mind if I enter with car that has same colors with flames   :'-)  Well the similarities ends there... :)

You said this is Plymouth, which model is this? I cant figure it out.. Or is this very tough custom that doesn't go with any specific model anymore? :)

Neither Ed or I know too much about classic American cars. We discussed various styles of hot rods and since I already did a bog-standard 32 coupe, we felt we should do something different. I suggested a 'lead sled'. We actually looked at a Pontiac Torpedo 8 initially and liked the style of that. We then stopped looking at pictures and simply started building. Ed has decided to call it the Plymouth Rock because it sounds pretty neat and has it a historical connection to the former overseas colonies (also known as the United States). It's a bit of a joke, really.

I don't see why Ed or I should have problems with somebody else building a car with a similar colour scheme. It's not as though we invented it. I look forward to seeing it.

Cheers,
Ralph

You both did an impressive job with that beautiful and pretty hot babe.... the car that is,
although Abbey looks of course simply marvelous too.
A great, elegant and very inspiring work for sure!

I initially thought it was a pretty lousy idea to have to include a driver. I am also pretty sure that if wouldn't have had to include a driver or a story, I would have put in a few more pictures of my rod without Biff -the driver- blocking people's view of it. Still,  I had a lot of fun building Biff and Ed indeed did a wonderful job on Abbey. So, it was actually not such a bad idea after all, although I'm not sure whether anybody who voted paid any attention to that aspect of the contest

Since then I've built more figures (including Biff's wife and a motorcyclist) and there will probably be more in the future. You can see some of them and both Biff's 32 coupe and the Plymouth Rock in these pictures taken by Dr. S. about a month ago:
