USS Constitution: a work in progress

Recommended Posts

How are you going to build the bow then?

Sturdiness is something which i already found out to be essential when building models this size

so i would say the sturdier the better :-D

Which color will your deck be in? Brown or tan or something else?

BTW both these versions look awesome. Keep up the good work *y*

The bow will be pointier and have the upper berth deck walls and gun walls connected a lot better.

The deck will be rewn. The gray plates are just for added support.

I really admire you for starting such a big project. Those initial hulls both look good!

But I can't yet extrapolate in my mind what the end result will look like judging from these pics.

Keep us informed!

Thanx B *y*

The new one will look very close to older version.

Only stronger. X-D

P

Phredit:

Here's a comparison of the old interior and new interior of the gun deck walls along the bow so far.

prog3_cleaner1.png

Here's what the old version looks like.

Notice how there are 3 different angles on the walls.

One at the very top, one at the wall of the gundeck, and one just below the gundeck.

This sacrificed a lot of strength. |-/

prog3_cleaner2.png

Here's what the new version looks like.

There will only be one angle on this portion of the wall and add a lot more strength. *y*

It looks a lot cleaner now and the wall of the upper berth deck is connected to the wall of the lower gun deck, which gives a lot more strength.

Phredit number 2:

Well I preformed Bow Transplant Surgery today.

It went a lot better than i thought it would! *y*

Check it out:

prog3_bow.png

Unfortunately the donor of the Bow didn't make it. :'-(

Let us have a moment of silence for Version 2.0 of my Constitution. *sad*

prog3_didnt-make-it.png

Anywayz, here's a full (semi-blury) pic of my progress so far on Version 3.0 of the Constitution:

prog3_portbow1.png

I also made some really nice blurry close ups of how each gun port is built.

I had enough tiles to have the doors complete for the 16 gun ports.

(though i don't have enough 1x2 tiles for the rest 8-| ):

th_prog3_gunport1.png th_prog3_gunport2.png th_prog3_gunport3.png

With version 2.0 i was stuck as to how to progress to the spar deck with all the crazy angles of the bricks and such.

Version 3.0 should progress more quickly by the way the gundeck walls are looking at the moment. *y*

Also, the bow is now strong enough to support the weight of the entire MOC so far at almost any point.

When i add the decking and spardeck walls, the bow will be even stronger. X-D

Wow great work Phred! *y*

I've been looking at some Constitution pictures and you've got the shape just right! *sweet*

Also love the gunports, but wouldn't it be possible to fit a tile in the bottom so it doesn't show the studs?

Good job, I've never had the patience to build something over such a long time period. X-D

If I was you, I would leave that shield alone, iit can do bad things 8-| I'll show you soon *skull*

Thanx Cap'n Green Hair.

I think i'll try your idea and see if i like soon.

Of course if i do your idea, I'm going to need to get some more of ZCerberus' tiles again. :-D

Though i did find more than i thought i used when i dismantled Constitution 2.0. X-D

...

Thanx Mr. Builder.

I didn't know the shield will make you do bad things. X-O

I'll give it back to Casewindu then. :-)

Well, I gently persuaded some local cannibals to help me work on my constitution. ;-)

prog3_help1.png

Here's a close up of me getting some more fresh coffee. X-D

prog3_help2.png

Here's a closer view of the work i had done today:

prog3_help3.png

I like the use of torches for the top of the rigging support thingys.

It turned out better than i thought, and it's the right height that i needed.

Not too sure about the spar-deck walls. 8-|

It's been easier to put them in so far compared to the last constitution.

Of course, any part of this MOC is subject to rebuilding at any time with out notice :-P

Wow, I'd love to have a cup of coffee ship like that ;-)

Careful now on the cannibals, they look hungry and appaled. Is one of them eating an arm? 8-

The brick is "x278" on BL.

(link to BL part page)

There are a lot available in BL stores in the Netherlands.

P

Wow, those are cool!

Thanks for giving me that idea Phred *y*

No problem guys. *y*

The idea came from aaron morse in his heavy frigate thread.

Just don't buy any from the US, they're all mine. :-P

A good portion of the bow is "complete" now.

I just changed my mind how to do the coloring so i have to redo it,

so there'll be pics as soon as i'm done rebuilding the bow.

P

Phredit:

Got a good portion of the bow completed.

I really like the way it looks. *sweet*

It's pretty solid too.

Haven't figured out how to mount the bowsprit on,

but it shouldn't be too difficult.

Here be some pics:

prog3_bow6.png

prog3_bow4.png

Here be some more pics a little closer to what i've just completed:

prog3_bow5.png

And on last pic looking almost straight at the bow:

That's indeed an interesting part. I had never seen it before.

Your progress on the ships is impressive.

This will be one hell of a beast once finished.

Mr. Timber and his silly toy boat came to check on the progress of the Constitution. :-P

prog3_bow7.png

I mean Mr. Tiber. :'-(

I got some of the decking done in the bow.

And also figured out where to place the foremast.

prog3_bow8.png

I'm sorry Mr. Tiber! X-O

At first glance one would think the accessibility to the gundeck in the bow is not very good. 8-|

But a good portion of the flooring is removable.

prog3_bow9.png

Ok! Ok! I think your boat is really aweso- *skull*

Phred, have you got Islander slaves helping you build the Constitution?

That i do Mr. Phes ;-)

I needed more help and i didn't feel like paying anybody.

So that was the next best option.

Besides, if you keep them well fed, they don't seem to mind slavery. :-D

So don't run out of food otherwise you might end up being their lunch :-D

Thanx for the tip Mr. P ;-)

In fact i've just sent them on a lunch break, so there won't be any islanders to see today. :-D

I've made an attempt at making the Constitution's Cathead.

prog3_cathead3.png

I'd like to have the lion's head brick (shown below) placed on the end and designed it accordingly.

Though, i'm thinking of getting dark gray lions heads instead of tan.

I think it'll look better.

30274.jpg

prog3_cathead2.png

The string goes through the cathead "arm" and onto the spar deck shown below.

prog3_cathead1.png

Also, i've made a start on half of the gangway or main hatch.

prog3_gangway1.png

And of course, the grating is removable.

prog3_gangway2.png

but of course, what full grown man is able to stick his hand easily into a gap that's 4 studs wide.

so, i made the entire gangway removable.

prog3_gangway3.png

Some close ups of the gangway:

Sorry for the double post, but i felt there were too many pics to edit into my last post.

The islanders are much happier since the completed construction of the Camboose.

The actual camboose is black on the constitution, but i think dark bley works better to show more detail.

Here are some progress thumbnails:

As you can see, they've already been cooking up some fresh food. *skull*

There were rumors of them rioting; hopefully those rumors will go away now. >:-)

Here are some pics of the Camboose on the ship:

I'll cook ya up a burger as soon as possible Captain Green Plankton! *sweet*

Sorry bro.

The Prodigal Brother has Returned!!

No biggie, I just like giving you a hard time. :-P

I've got 7 of those black barrels and the next big BL order will have 5 more (if they're still there).

P

BTW: I've gotten further on the Constitution, just haven't taken any pictures yet.

Will take them tomorrow.

WOW, 8- eyes pop out of head! this ship is already amazing and its not even finished! I cant wait to log on tomorrow and see these updates! its so good i almost feel inclined to pay you for just seeing it!

Seriously WOW... i am in actual shock, how much do you estimate this will end up costing you? No cost is to great for a piece of art like this!

I love lego, just love it... seeing this just confirms it!

Thanx Cpt. Pegleg Blockbeard

Here be the pics:

The Prow of the Constitution is now complete.

I got all of the 3mm rigid tubing i needed.

Check it out.

prog3_bow-done1.png

th_prog3_bow-done4.png th_prog3_bow-done3.png th_prog3_bow-done7.png

My brother let me borrow his only light bley lion head modified brick to see what they'd look like on my cathead:

prog3_bow-done2.png

Here are some pics of the interior of the bow.

There are a couple of doors that open to the front portion thingy of the bow.

I think it's the head (but i'm not sure).

th_prog3_bow-done5.png th_prog3_bow-done6.png

Using the same idea as Errorist, i took a pic of my ship so far with our dog. X-D

prog3_bow-done8.png

I've started on the capstan.

On the constitution, there are two capstans.

I just got the gears needed today to have them rotate independently, with them on top each other.

prog3_capstan1.png

The gray gears on the left rotate rotate independently of the yellow and white gears.

As with my ship it really shows the size of this behemoth ;-)

But hey that's why we're doing it.

impressive job phred *y*

I just have a few questions though.

- Are the spar deck walls really that high?

- What's that ingenous technique you used for your masts?

and last but not least

- How big is your capstan going to be once it's finished?

Anyway keep up the good work *wub*

They are pretty much that high.

The lego netting is a little bigger than it's supposed to be, so the hammock netting is higher. :-/

Here's a link to the interior walls of the spar deck.

- What's that ingenous technique you used for your masts?

I got the idea from a column that i saw on B-S.

Here's the folder. Fixed the link

And a pic:

- How big is your capstan going to be once it's finished?

I think it'll end up to be about this big:

th_capstan2-v1.png

There's going to be two, one on the Gun Deck and the other right on top of it on the Spar Deck.
