Looking for advice [Pirate Noob]

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

after seeing the Pics for the next Pirates wave my old love for the theme ressurected (when i was a kid i was a huge fan of the first ever released Pirates sets and played "Monkey Island" on my PC the later years)! Well i´m kinda excited for the new Pirates Sets, but i would love me a bigger ship, since the Prices for the Imperial Flagship are getting ridiculous i guess i have to build myself one, since i´m not really in MOCing i would love to get instructions for a custom Ship with a proper size a la Imperial Flagship! Are there any on this board? Or does anybody has ideas where to obtain Instructions?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

well, it depends on what you want... if original set instructions are a good enough basis for you, Dr_Spock has the thing for you. If instead it's instructions for MOCs you're looking for... well, that's a different thing... they usually don't exist... and even if they do, giving away a creation is... difficult. If you're willing to invest cold cash, you might want to check eBay or the like, sometimes there are models for sale. Bricklink now has a MOC-shop, but I don't know if there's ships out there...

Question: Do you use or know how to use LDD?

Being in a somewhat similar situation Diggydoes, I may be able to pass on some advice. I am a long time castle/space collector, though I did have a few of the original smaller pirate sets from my childhood (Sabre Island and smaller). My son recently got into tall ships so a spent an evening pricing out the cost of buying the Imperial Flagship (10210). Just the pieces for ship alone came up to a whopping $365 US. Now over $120 of this was for the six mast pillar pieces, who's red-brown colour was unique to that set (the incoming ship may have them as well, so that price might eventually come down from ludicrous levels). With some judicous colour subsitutions for the sake of finanacial sanity, it comes down to a more palatable $250ish before shipping, which is still quite the investment. I had been slowly collecting bits via small orders once a month as a project, and keeping to a set budget was proving a fun challenge in itself.

But, I had a huge stroke of luck last month and managed to acquire both the Black Seas Baracuda (6285) and smaller Carribean Clipper. The BSB is one hull section and one mast smaller than the IF and immensely cheaper on Bricklink. Were I to do it over, I would have simply bought the BSB (which is big already) and expanded upon it while using white sails I made myself. It would be far cheaper in the long run and I think the BSB had a better build concept for the mast/sails/rigging anyway.

Speaking of which, there are a couple of good tutorials to read in the Pirate Index: "Building Frigates" by Captain Green Hair and a few making on your own sails. They gave me a better comprehension of what I was getting into, along with a touch of inspiration.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your advices so far guys!

Well i´m looking for Instructions of MOC´s mainly! I´ve built some SW sets via Instructions from MOCers (like Cavegods´s UCS AT-AT and Anio´s UCS Slave I) and now i´m looking for a nice, impressive ship that i can build via Instructions! I have the Imperial Flagship on my map but if i rebrick a official Lego Set i want it to be 100% (piece-)acurat which is pretty tough to fulfill with the Flagship (a lot of rare/expensive pieces).

Since i´m not really good in creating my own MOCed ship i thought i would ask here if there´s maybe a thread with a MOC which incl. Instructions?!

I'm afraid a thread like this doesn't exist... maybe, cause there's no such demand... or cause it's a piratey world out there...

May I ask what piece count you have in mind, so what your budget is for this project?

Regards,

I have one as a matter of fact but it may not be what you're looking for.

I made a digital version of my latest ship so you could use Lego Digital Designer as a building guide to replicate it;

(Building instructions at the end of the first post)

It's the only one I've made instructions for though.

Well parts-wise i would say sky´s the limit ;) i´ve built a 8000pcs AT-AT so i would say the more the better ;)

@Sebeus I: thanks for the link! That ship looks pretty sweet, i like the white hull very much! Any idea of how many pieces that ship consists?

LDD sais there are 1632 pieces but that's without the upper masts and booms, the cannons, the minifigures part of the quarter deck and some finishing bits.

In the end I'd say it will still be under 2000 pieces, which is suprisingly few for a ship this size actually.

I've two LDD files from some of my ships. I build Pinnacle at first exactly like the LDD file and outside of rigging it was a rather quick build. The Matterhornfile I never build because I expanded it off prefabs in an LDD file I no longer have. Though I modified both ships heavily from the LDD to bricks, these files may be good insight into some of the best techniques from a large number of the ship builders in this forum.

hmmm... I too made a LDD file of my ship "De Ruyter"... although it's more of a breakdown (i just wanted to file the techniques I used).

But in my opinion there's nothing better than to build a ship yourself. For me it was very relaxing to build 1.5 years till the ship was finished.

To build from scratch you can use ship's blue prints available from the web or digitally designed ships (yup, there are digital sailors pir_laugh2.gif ). If you want to build a MOC from instructions I remember one eurobrick member that designs big ships digitally and makes instructions for them too. I believe he sells the instructions on bricklink. One problem... I don't remember who it was.

I almost forgot: Captain Greenhair made an excellent tutorial (with a lot of pictures and a shopping list of essential parts) to make a frigate: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=30622

You can basically build a replica of you just find a ship you like and then look at the pictures very closely.

I know that is not the answer you wanted, but great things arnt made with little work.

Hi,

Like Kwatchi and Swan Dutchman suggested I'd definately recomend checking out Captain Greenhair's excellent tutorial here http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=30622.

I'm about half way through my build based on this tutorial and she is shaping up to look like a very nice ship. Cost wise it can definately be expensive though - depends on what you already have in your stash, and, if like me, you insist on using colours that you don't have much off.

Good luck!
