For the past two days I've been experiencing a never-before-seen issue with Lego Digital Designer, and while I previously mentioned it in the bugs and brick errors topic, that got no response and I think the issue is significant enough to merit its own topic.

Basically, whenever I try to save a new file on LDD, the program crashes. Generally this happens partway through saving, resulting in a tiny, unreadable LXF file with the name I had chosen for the new file. I can load, edit, and save previously-made LXF files just fine, but if I try to "Save As" under a new name, or save a new model for the first time, the program crashes.

For reference, I'm using LDD 4.3.8, the current version (which I did try uninstalling and reinstalling to see if it fixed the issue—it did not). My computer is a mid-2012 15-inch MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite version 10.10.2. My computer was recently serviced at an Apple Store, where the AirPort wireless receiver was replaced, but I don't know how that could be to blame—particularly considering that saving new files with other programs works normally, and LDD itself functions properly apart from the inexplicable and crippling inability to save new files.

Google has been no help at all in terms of finding a solution (or even anyone who can corroborate the issue), and while I have contacted Lego customer service to see if they could report the issue to the LDD team, I'm unsure whether they'll be able to figure out the cause of my problem. As such, any assistance from the Eurobricks community would be greatly appreciated!

Seems like LDD (as a program) hasn't got write access to files it creates. Which is weird but possible in *nix environments. I have zero experience with mac os but under linux I would be checking the rights of the user account LDD is running under. and or the right of the folder you creating the files in.

Good luck with a solution to this.

Not sure how I should interpret this or what the purpose of your post was.

In any case, please only post if you have something to contribute to the discussion.

Thanks. :classic:

Thank you for being the first person to even offer a possible solution. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case—my user account seems to have read and write access to both my models folder (where I normally save files) and LDD itself. On top of that, saving to other locations doesn't fix the problem.

I still haven't gotten contacted by Lego Customer Service with any sort of follow-up either, so I'm really at a loss—not just for a solution to the problem, but for who else I might turn to in the hopes of finding one.

Does the file results 0 bytes in size?

Maybe some kind of problem with the integrated "zip" function of your OS.

Are you able to zip files using the integrated function and not a third party software?

I discovered similar issue for last week or two.

Sometimes I peek a brick, and can't release it: it moves with mouse whatever I do.

Next step - is LDD crash.

The only thing I can do is to save current model (ctrl+s).

After that LDD successfully crashes, but model is ok.

Happens about once per 5 not big models (30-150 pieces).

Not usually zero bytes... but always a low number (I just tested with a file containing a lone 1x1 brick, which resulted in an unreadable file with no preview image, 22 bytes in size).

I can zip files just fine with my Mac's built-in Archive Utility, so I don't think that's the problem I'm dealing with.

I had this problem this evening. I am running on Mac with OSX 10.10.5, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB.

I have reinstalled (version 4.3) and have maximized Compatibility mode level in the Preferences. I was able to save, exit, and reload the model without crashing LDD.

If this doesn't help, I tried. Currently experiencing the same, but I now remember what I could to avoid it. So I usually organize my files into  different folders. Usually people would save it in the main folder without additional folders. I'm going to try this again because it did work for me in the past when I struggled for days saving something. Same your file in the main folder which should be easier for the program to route it to, then if you have preferred additional folders like myself to keep track of what is what. They move it there eventually.

I find the LDD rather solid, I've had it crash, especially when pivoting linked parts, but never when saving a file.

Wow, did I post this topic? It went away at some point... wish I'd documented why or how it now that other people are experiencing it.
