How to Make Movement go Back & Forth

I really don't know how to explain what I'm looking for. I want to add some movement to my creations. Specifically, how the police men move back and forth in the video for this creation: http://www.brothers-brick.com/2016/07/06/gotham-theater-showdown-epic-lego-batman-comic-book-cover/

Can anyone help me in this foray into technic?

Here's a mechanism for that.

You'd connect the motor (+ gearing) to the orange axle, and the figure stands on the blue axle. The black beam would be connected to the ground.

The range of motion can be varied by changing the lenghts of the levers.

Thanks. Now I just have to figure out how to fit all that in a 4 stud wide wall and the motor in an 8x8 tower...
