The Falconer, one of the six Veterans, was waiting for them. Byblos the Librarian was also present, organizing shelves on an upper level.

heroicaquest100-library.jpg

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"There you are. We best get straight into the matter. At the heart of the Babeleth Darklands rises a tall, dark tower. Nobody knows how long it has been there, but it is said to be the center of witchcraft and sorcery. It is there, if anywhere, that we can find more information about this new threat Eubric is facing. In case you haven't heard, a powerful and ancient witch has aligned herself with Ulric of the Wolfgang. Nowadays she calls herself Barbariccia Dellamore, but she has had many other names in the past. A thousand years ago she lived in Nu Mercution, the Moon Elven city that once stood in place of Eubric, and went with the name of Sorceress Ambergaze of Babeleth. That is why we have every reason to believe that the Tower of Babel holds knowledge about her. The Keeper of the Tower has not responded to our inquiries, so we decided to send an envoy to go there personally."

The Veteran looks at each of the heroes. "This is where you come in. The darklands are a perilous, desolate place where monsters and mutants reign. There is some civilization there, most notably witches, undead and outlaws who have been exiled there. You must travel to the Tower of Babeleth, and find out three things about Barbariccia:

1. Where she came from?

2. What are the extent of her powers?

3. How can she be defeated?

Once you have collected answers to these questions, return with haste. We are very aware that there are spies of Wolfgang inside the walls of this house, so they will surely try to intercept your mission. You have the power of the Aurora Nôrnalis on your side, but they do not protect you from captivity or torture. I have full confidence on the six of you. Now, Byblos will tell you more about Babeleth."

The Metasimian librarian climbs down and leads the party to a map.

heroica-mapbabeleth.jpg

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg

"These are the Darklands. From what I've read, they are not on anyone's top 100 places to visit before you die list. However, as the Falconer pointed out, there are some villages in there, as well as one larger town called Vega. It has grown manyfold in just a couple of years, and is now known as the "City of Sin", with gambling dens, brothels and bars to suit any outlaw's needs. Rumours tell it was because of the influence of someone called the Emerald Emperor.

Now, here's the important part; there are three ports where you can sail to:

Dim Haven
, favored by smugglers because of its access to the Crystalline Sea. It has no proper roads leading out, so you would have to face the wilderness if you choose it.

Port Taboo
, beyond the treacherous Strait of Sirenes. The
Blood Brick Road
begins there, leading to the Tower of Babel via Vega.

Wailing Wharf
, which is the farthest destination, and surrounded by waters full of whales and sea monsters. It is the closest to the Tower, though, with the Blood Brick Road leading to it."

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"So, you have three destinations to choose from, but you can also choose your preferred method of travel. You can either take my personal ship, The Homefinder, which is one of the smaller vessels in the Bonaparte fleet. Or I could arrange you a passage at The Flouncy Phoenix, which is a magic ship that the Ziegfrieds use. Captain Squidraken has travelled to Salmanda which is near Babeleth countless times, and knows the waters like the back of his pocket. His ship is much faster than mine, but he would only take you there and not bring you back. Or you cand find a third method on your own. The choice is yours."

The Falconer and Byblos are ready for any questions the party might still have.

Sarge arrives smoking a cigar. He drops it on his way in and stamps it out with his pegleg. He nods through most of the veteran's speech. He wasn't really concentrating but at hearing the word Vega he grins cunningly, interrupting.

"I remember that place when it were just a barrel with some dice on it. My kinda place."

Sarge ponders what was said for a minute then says "We is goin to Vega so Port Taboo seems like the best place to go."

Looking at the Falconer he says "Don't I know you?" before shrugging and going on to say " So what is the Tower anyway?"

The Nord didn't really care about the witch Barbariccia, in fact he had barely even heard of her. His concentration was far off. Instead he looked around, eyeing his fellow "heroes". Of every quest he had been, the current party was perhaps the most motley of crews. He figured there were few amongst them who actually signed up for the good of Heroica, but rather for the reward and promise that the Darklands gave. Eric had never been to Babeleth proper, his voyages had taken him on an occasional stop in Dim Haven, though. In a way he looked forward to seeing more of the Darklands. His eyes glistened as he heard the Metasimian speak of Vega, City of Sins. It seemed liked his kind of place.

"I say we go to Vega via Dim Haven," he then eyed the Falconer suspiciously before continuing, "and we take the Squid's boat. We'll find a way back. I don't care if I'd have to swim back, I'm not getting on a Bonaparte boat."

Eric snarled and his face turned into a vicious grin as he mentioned the name 'Bonapartes'. He hadn't forgotten his self-imposed debt to Reno..

EDIT: Seeing as Pyro posted as well:

The Nord turned to the old man and the viciousness of his grin slowly ebbed away, but his faint smile remained at least mischievous. "Apparently it looks like we're here to push your wheelchair, old-timer."

Avalanche arrives at a run, a sack filled with his recent purchases from the Marketplace slung over his shoulder. He looks around at the party. The other three heroes from his last quest made up half the party, but two were strangers to him: the old, one-legged soldier and the tall Evoker with the strange hat. Looks like we're in for quite a ride.

He listens to the Falconer outline the mission. "Guys, by the looks of it we'll be encountering some Sirens if we travel to Port Taboo, some smugglers if we travel to Dim Haven and some sea monsters at the Wailing Wharf. I vote for Dim Haven. I'd rather take on smugglers than Sirens or sea monsters. And I think we should take The Homefinder. How do we know the other ship isn't full of Wolfgang spies? The Falconer is our employer and a Veteran of Heroica. I say we trust her."

He turns to the Falconer, "I have a few questions for you. First, who is the Keeper of the Tower? Is he on our side or Baba's? Secondly, what is the Aurora Nornalis? And how will it help us on our journey? And finally, could you tell me all you know about this Emerald Emperor? Curious to know who he is."

Sarge looks curiously at the yeti. Like Nagure; but smaller.

"How'd'you know the Bonaparte ship don't have spies. I was in the Bonapartes and I sold secrets." Sarge blushes as he remembers that Hestia Bonaparte was in the room. "Did I say Sold? Sorry, Bought. Anyway. Yer right about Dim Haven. But smugglers are nice people! Like merchants but..... Illegal. I was a - Nevermind. Anyway. There are plenty of abandonned ships down by the docks; I remember a were-gator one that looked in good condition."

Nur grinned slightly. "Gentlemen. Speed and stealth are our allies. Let us ride upon the quicker ship whose sails are aided by magic to arrive at the Tower as soon as possible." Nur was more than interested in "acquiring" as many tomes and artifacts he could from the Tower of Babel. "Fear nothing from the creatures of the sea we are sure to face for I have whacked a kracken. What watery foe could be any more challenging?"

Eric was about to comment on the old man's remark, but then the Yeti spoke and answering him seemd more immediate. "Like I said, Snowman, I'm not getting on a Bonaparte ship. You're ignorant to blindly trust the Falconer, who you've never met before." The Nord briefly directed his gaze back towards the Falconer and sized her up. Turning back to the Yeti, he gruffly said: "we either take the magic boat or find us another ship. I don't need niceties from the Bonapartes."

Avalanche says to Nur, "It seems that our other two present questmates wish to stop at Vega on the way to the Tower. So going the quickest way might be unpopular with the party."

" So what is the Tower anyway?"

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"A tower is a tower. I have never been to the Darklands, so I cannot describe it to you in any more details."

Curious to know who he is."

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"I only know that the Tower of Babel is lead by the Keeper. Some say he - or she - is the ruler of entire Babeleth, but I've also heard that the Keeper never leaves the tower. The Aurora Nôrnalis are the magical artifacts we Veterans carry that seals the fates of Heroica's members. They prevent you from dying on any quest you do for Heroica. They only came to our possession less than three years ago, and they have ensured that our organization is now more popular than ever. What comes to this Emerald Emperor, this is the first time I've heard of him. He must have great assets in order to found an entire city in the middle of the Darklands, though."

"Well, the Falconer is one of the Veterans of Heroica, and I don't think she has anything but our best interests at heart. But if you won't get on a Bonaparte ship then we should take Squidraken's ship, as we can't just leave you behind."

"Those Auroras sound pretty useful then. Do you know if the Keeper is friend or foe, and is he/she aligned with the witch?"

"C'mon this aint a democracy, we're going to Port Taboo with the Bonapartes. The Zeigfrieds hate me. We can also get our own ship if the Nord is getting too angry about travelling with disciplined marines."

The Falconer gives Eric a crooked smile.

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"You have so much hate in you, norseman. But trust me on this; I am not asking your help as a Bonaparte, but as one of the leaders of the organization you have enlisted into. Surely you can accept that, and follow through with the mission?"

"Do you know if the Keeper is friend or foe, and is he/she aligned with the witch?"

heroicanpc-falconer.jpg

"I cannot say anything beyond the fact that the Keeper has not responded to our letters. He or she is not willing to share her knowledge voluntarily, it seems, but we hope that you can convince him or her otherwise."

"C'mon this aint a democracy, we're going to Port Taboo with the Bonapartes."

"I had an inkling you would not be the most agreeable group, so I assigned Mr. Emorith as your party leader. He will have the final say on these matters."

"What watery foe could be any more challenging?"

"You might be surprised."

"I think that This 'Emerald Emperor' is Roland Emeraldo, I wasn't in Dastan at the time of his banishment, but I've heard about it. Now I think that we ought to take the Homefinder, smaller is generally faster, and It'll have a shallower draft, so it can get closer inshore. And I agree with Avalanche in that I think we should go to Dim Haven, It's out of the way and therefore it is less likely to have Wolfgang, and It'll be easier to avoid Wolfgang in the wilderness, if you're supposed to be on the road there's some chance you'll be looked for on the road and not off it. I'd avoid Vega if I was you, it'd be to easy for the Wolfgang to get at us in a big city like that."

"C'mon this aint a democracy, we're going to Port Taboo with the Bonapartes. The Zeigfrieds hate me. We can also get our own ship if the Nord is getting too angry about travelling with disciplined marines."

"You seem to think you are the party leader, you're not. The Necromancer is, and it is his choice as to what we do in the end, and I don't think that acquiring another ship is a good idea, I don't want to pay for passage on a pirate ship." Edited by Lord Duvors

Eric snorted and returned and equally crooked "smile". "Sure, I'll follow through with the mission. When have I not?"

The Nord then replied to what the Dwarf had said. "Smaller is generally faster, except you're wrong here. It was explicitly stated that the Squidman's ship would be faster in this case. I say we take that one."

Eric growled and rolled his eyes. "Hmph, the Bonapartes can hardly be called marines. They're nautical farmers who cultivate coin on the back of sea merchants and others who live off the sea. They'd rather strangle the Free Islands to death than loosen their grip and giving it some air to breath"

"I think that This 'Emerald Emperor' is Roland Emeraldo, I wasn't in Dastan at the time of his banishment, but I've heard about it.

"Oh look who's got his copy of 'Who's who' on him. First edition I'm sure." Sarge smirks.

"I agree with you on the boat. If a Ziegfried flying ship mysteriously flies of or we take the Homefinder the Wolfgang can find the connection back to us. So I agree with the nord." Sarge lights a cigar, before realises that he is in a library and puts it out. That Viking's right. Bonaparte authority wouldn't let me sell me bloody medals.

"Here what's yer name Nord, I don't care much for politics but in the last 20 years law is spottin merchants buy and sell things. Stoppin merchants buyin spoils of war the bastards...."

Sarge decided at that point that the norseman would be a valuable ally if others were going to be like this. After all, he seemed like a down to earth man. Not one of those bloody polite true heroes.

"Now, about this map,"

heroica-mapbabeleth.jpg

"I notice that you haven't given us any information on the majority of the locations on this map, so can you please enlighten us as to the nature of the Mud Pit, the Ruins of Transmogria, Fellcrest, the Ozmath Marchland, the Lost Forest, the Fellhorns, and the Mountains of Desolation?"

"Yes, but passage on the Flouncy Phoenix is a one-way trip, I'd rather buy a round trip ticket than one that only lands us in a land of Vampires and Pirates and doesn't get us out again."

"As for your insulting remarks, I'll let the Falconer address them, she is in a better position to do so than myself."

Althior listens carefully to the veteran's speech. As the company debates on their voyage, he ponders over his options before speaking. "We need as few people to know we're there as possible." He turns, "Byblos, what is the terrain like from the Wailing Warf to the tower?"

"C'mon this aint a democracy, we're going to Port Taboo with the Bonapartes. The Zeigfrieds hate me. We can also get our own ship if the Nord is getting too angry about travelling with disciplined marines."

"No, it isn't. But the veterans didn't leave you with the final say, did they?" He glares, "And besides, the Ziegfrieds are indeed quite fond of me, so I think they can cut you some slack need be."

"Yes, but passage on the Flouncy Phoenix is a one-way trip, I'd rather buy a round trip ticket than one that only lands us in a land of Vampires and Pirates and doesn't get us out again."

"Indeed. I'm not sure what kind of voyage we can get back from there. It seems that the Bonaparte ship is our best bet. I don't trust them any more than you, Eric, but they seem to be our best option at the moment." He ponders over the options before suggesting another plan. "However, if you know a quick way back with more trustworthy people, then perhaps we can take the Ziegfried's boat to the Warf, make our way along the blood brick road, and come back to Port Taboo to find a way back home,"

"Indeed. However, no matter what we do it will be an equally long journey. This way, we get there the quickest and without too many people noticing us, and we can get out easier. But, again, it is just a suggestion. Do you have a better idea, master dwarf?"

"There are three ports there," Eric began, putting up three fingers as if speaking to a child, "filled with smugglers and others who know how to handle a ship. There's bound to be a way out there.", he ended. He kept his perpetual grin and despite growing irritated with the situation, an air of coldness and aloofness still surrounded him.

"I'll say it once more: I suggest we take the magic boat, or whatever fan skipp we can find here, and we go to Dim Haven." he looked around at each of the heroes and smirked. "Our crew looks motley enough to pass as smugglers, cutthroats or mercs. We'll blend in."

Eric paused and sighed.

"From Dim Haven, we trek to Vega. It's the biggest city in the Darklands, so perhaps it is useful to visit it before going to the Tower? In case we need more supplies. Anyway, a city like Vega will surely have some information of use to us about the Darklands and the Tower."

Eric grinned. " "Information" ", he thought to himself, "a nice way to justify the need for liquor, booty and bounty." Quite pleased with himself, the Nord stopped talking. He normally wasn't much of a talker, but when the others were wrong, he just needed to set them straight.

"From studying what little has been written about the history of Babeleth, I've learned that Transmogria used to be the capital city before it fell in ruins. I've read that it is now populated by mutants - beings horrendously transformed by the dark magics flowing freely in the Darklands. Fellcrest is a village inhabited by undead. They don't have much hospitality towards the living there, I've heard. The Ozmath Marchland is home to many witches, and there is an eternal curse on the Lost Forest, so that nobody who enters it ever returns. The mountains are mountains, nothing more to be said about them."

"Byblos, what is the terrain like from the Wailing Warf to the tower?"

"The Blood Brick Road is supposed to run between the Wharf and the Tower, but the lands are desolate and barren. Who knows if the road is even there anymore."

"Interesting...the witches of the Marchland will surely be able to give us the most information as to the origins of Ambergaze. She must be among the greatest of their kind therefore known by many. We have to get to that area quickly with the squid's ship by way of the Wailing Warf.

Sarge sniggers at what the viking says, it was funny even though it was kind of directed towards him. But as much as he hated being a suck up, or agreeing as others called it, the viking was acting in Sarge's interests too without knowing it.

"S'long as we hide the shortround over here. But he's a midget, shouldn't be too hard. The nord - What's yer bloody name - is right."

Sarge pauses, before going on to say "We gotta decide on something, otherwise we'll be standing around here all day."
