I think everyone was expecting Grand Emporium or Town Hall to pass before it. Although I suspect that all three are on the stock from their last production runs, so as they run out they will retire. Pet Shop probably just has the lowest stock at the moment. It makes me think there is a new Modular in the pipeline for late summer or fall release. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm sure a lot of that is speculation considering those are all older sets, so the quantities available will be slowly going down. It is entirely possible they do have a planned discontinuation of the modulars, but if stock in one depletes before another, they may not do another production run for such a small time frame. I remember one actually saying The Simpsons House was already retiring ....in the same month it just became available. They probably have their sources I guess but considering how long the Death Star keeps staring us all in the face after numerous times of being told "it will be retiring this year" for every single year, I will believe it when it actually comes to pass. Knowing the store that Jason goes to I would say it depends really heavily on specifically which employees they spoke with. There are a few there that are extremely knowledgeable re back end and inner workings things, more so then you will typically find in a store, and I would view as extremely reliable sources. Others however are standard retail types. No idea on anything until it comes off the truck. From watching the video it strikes me that it isn't so much that this is a list of "officially retiring" sets as it is sets that they either do not anticipate getting many or any more pieces of, or that have been disappearing from store order lists. Some sets will have a hard End of Life date to clear shelf space, or they will be moved to discount pricing. These seem more like depletion of stock with no expected restock. A soft retirement if you will. And I can see a good Lego Store clerk being familiar with what sets are trending towards depletion at the distribution level. I know the store that Jason goes to. I tend to give them more then a bit of benefit of the doubt. In terms of store stock space they are one of the largest if not the largest in North America. Not just in retail shelf space, but in back room storage capacity. As such they are not very restricted in their stocking by space concerns. They have a nice deep pool and keep a solid stock of everything that is available. And the core staff is knowledgable enough and has enough connections to regional and above to have a very very clear idea of what is going on regarding specific product. If this store is running low on a product it is because it is becoming scarce in the channel and warehouses. The staff does not always know if or when Lego will go back and do another production run of a given set. But they have more than enough experience to make a well informed guesstimate of whether or not that is likely to happen for a given product. They sometimes get surprised (such as the unexpected Fire Brigade production run early last year) but typically they are right. They never provide or know hard retirement dates, unless an IP license is involved (such as Harry Potter) but they can well predict what is going away.
