Fabuland Builders Guild - Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Will like to check if Fabuland reviews are welcome? Because I hope to do a review on one of my Fabuland sets over the weekend if my time permits for me to take out from the storeroom. :classic:

Yes yes yes!!

Absolutely! That is a great idea that we haven't seen so far, good thinking!

As with all Fabuland efforts, any pictoral set reviews will be indexed as well.

Fabuland Reviews On!

Unfortunately, I don't have time for reviewing my sets now :hmpf_bad: , so I'll see if there will still be space for them later. For now, everyone who can make a Fabuland set review is welcome, imo

I'll be waiting to see your reviws, WhiteFang

Yes yes yes!!

Look out for the latest 3683 Fabuland Amusement Park review

I have finished the review in advance, as promised.

Feel free to give comments!

Did all the builders changed the normal Fabuland arms into System minifigs hands? Why? :classic:

(just wondering)

uh I just did that too. it looks kind of the same but the minifig hand is better posable (and the grip is smaller)

Gee, I love those snazzy Fabuland builder's guild tags. Can I get one if I post my Fabuland keychain display creation here (from a couple of years back I must admit). You turn the wheel in the front and the whole top layer rotates to display the various keychains.

EDIT:

Moved to a new topic, as requested.

Could you post a seperate thread of that so I can index it? Done!

As for the tag... Done!

Thank you for your support of the Fabuland Builders Guild! :sweet:

Announcement!

Major Change to the Guild Admissions Process

In order to promote Fabuland building in a way consistant with a true desire to build, not just to get a shiny new tag, the admissions process is changing.

New members will be admitted, based on their building efforts, once a month. That gives you a good month of building time to present a number of creative and inspired Fabuland works, which we will then review to determine new admissions. During that time, your finished creations will still be indexed. Addition to the index does not guarantee that you will qualify for the guild.

So, at this point, if you have a love of the Fabuland, you should be building, just like you should have always been. Present your best efforts in seperate threads, just like any other theme. As the end of the month approaches, if we think you've displayed something extra, something really special, you may be considered for membership.

Whether you make it or not, keep building, keep growing, don't be discouraged, know that you're improving your skills.

Does that seem fair to everyone? This topic is definitely open for comments and suggestions.

Now get building, the Guild wants ewe! Er. You. Fabuland does that to me.

I have not changed mine, but I may do so in the future. Obviously minifig arms are much more common, and I think they look great too.

I think thats a great idea, members of the Guild should be exclusive builders with a passion for Fabuland.

Yes, I think this will be a much fairer process of building up this guild. Fully agreed that this will be a much efficient method :classic:

It will be fair to everyone, not just trying to get to have a tag for the sake of having one because it looks nice. But, the builder must have the love for Fabuland building

And now for a Fabuland Building tip

A couple people have asked me if there's any way to tighten up the joints of Fabuland figs and the answer is yes. Fabuland fig joints get very loose with time, especially if you wash them in hot water...I used to play with mine in the bath when I was a kid and it leaves them totally floppy with worn off faces, so only clean them if absolutely necessary and then use only luke warm water and a low peroxide solution.

Here's how to tighten up the joints:

One easy way to tighten up the arms is to remove the arm and pack the socket with a little cotton or tissue-then replace the arm. This will provide enough friction to make the arm poseable. A little more involved and permanent solution involves clear coating the joint pieces...

You will need a paint brush and clear coat gloss acrylic:

or a spray clear coat:

joints_05.jpg

Take the loose figure apart:

joints_01.jpg

Removing the legs can be difficult and even a little dangerous. The legs are held in place with a Fabuland-specific pin. Once you've removed one, you can use it to push pins through on other figures like this:

joints_06.jpg

Once you have that pin, it's not always easy. Be patient because it doesn't always work... Also, there's a trick in that you need to get that first pin out. I used a nail punch:

joints_07.jpg

Once you have the figure apart, spray or brush the clear coat onto the ends of the arms and the pin:

joints_02.jpg

joints_03.jpg

Let the clear coat dry for a day and then put the fig back together. The extra surface area the clear coat adds should provide tighter joints for quite some time and the clear coat is perfectly safe for the plastic.

Enjoy! More tips soon! :classic:

Today I was uploading a few files on BS, and a folder catched my eye. So I remembered I did use Fabuland characters (mainly Sinner and Copmike) in my comic: Discovery Bricks. Since the Index includes also comics and stories, would you be interested in adding mine :look: ?

Here are the links to the EB posts (I didn't consider the first issue, since it did not include Fabuland MFs, and wasn't really a comic, yet; it was just a sort of stop-motion story):

Discovery Bricks 2 - The Walrus that came from the Past (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12975)

Discovery Bricks 3 - At the Rescue (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15068)

Btw, I now remember (again) that Sinner, too, created a story for his sigfig: The Abyss (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11599)

I hesitate a bit on Discovery Bricks, since it isn't technically a Fabuland story or built in that style, but I think it can qualify, if you do the hard work.

Could you link me up to the whole series? No point featuring just a couple of episodes.

As for The Abyss, very good catch there. It's a story revolving around Sinner changing his head, and he utilizes a lot of Fabuland in the process. Plus, who can forget all of the tasty Fabuland Edge packed inside? :sweet:

To conform to tradition and logical standards, I've split this discussion off from the actual FBG Index. The Index will remain pinned above and isn't meant to be replied to. It will continue to be used to index MOCs, comics/stories, decals, set reviews, helpful hints and other useful links.

This thread is now meant to be used for Fabuland discussions, questions, comments and such.

Enjoy, and keep building Fabulandulously!

Excuse my noobish question, but why Fabuland? As a younger builder, I have neither sets nor figures, as I'm sure many others don't. Is there any way for someone who enjoys Fabuland but doesn't have any figures or sets to join this fervor?

This is fantastic! I am new here and a massive Fabuland fan. I have been collecting Fabuland since 1979 when I was 5. I have a complete collection with most sets in triplicate. I would love to do some set reviews for this forum. I even built a Fabuland train using the 9V system. I will upload some pictures later today. Fabuland ROCKS!

A very reasonable question and one I'm glad you asked, I'm sure others have thought it.

To get involved with Fabuland is like any other theme, clearly you need a few key elements, mostly figures. They're available for very reasonable prices on Bricklink. It isn't much different than getting involved in classic space or pirates, for example, and the prices start similarly.

At that point, you should look at as many MOCs as you can find to get an idea of the style of Fabuland. A good place to start is the Fabuland Builders Guild Index and the links contained therein.

Then you just build, same as you would any system theme, since it's system compatible. But don't stop there, you can do so much more! You can expand into Fabuland specific parts, which will still work with system, so it's like expanding your possibilities. New accessories, walls and doors: lots of things that would surprise you. The standard lamppost being used in sets like Cafe Corner was originally a Fabuland part. Same with the axe used in Jabba's Palace. Even the classic space radio began as a Fabuland part, surprisingly.

Now some will argue that it's a bit simplistic, but that's part of the charm. It's animals living human lives, and maybe LEGO didn't intend it, but they do all the things that you or I might do, just like any other minifig. As a result, sometimes you get a curious mix of the innocent with the shocking. We call that "The Fabuland Edge" and it's a wonderful thing. You'll see examples in the index and find it hard to resist laughing. Fabuland is fun, there is just no way around it! :sweet:

Welcome to Eurobricks, fellow Fabulander! We'd love to see your pics, and thrilled to have some more set reviews, that would be Fabulandulous!

Fabuland does indeed rock! Thanks for joining us! :sweet:

I hope I may use this topic to ask you some questions about Fabuland. I am starting to get into this theme, I really like to MOC something with them. But I don't own any Fabuland and I found this (my question: are these prices reasonable and should I buy them?(I can always bid):

http://images.kapaza.com/photoslarge/9500000/9507455.jpg => 2 EUR

They are, and the quality (what we can see) looks very good.

That said, I'd like to remind anyone who is considering making an online purchase to carefully evaluate the risks involved and protect themselves in any way possible. While we may comment on the apparent 'value' of a deal like this, we can't know who the seller is, or how honest they may be. That is always the responsibility of you, the buyer.

Trade safe!

My thoughts:

This is interesting, I noticed a few fancy tags and thought to myself "meh another fad", however it has turned into something much larger

Can I protest it?

Seriously this is theme favoritism and shouldn't be tolerated, it can be viewed as biased or unfair since there isn't any other guilds, pretty soon we'll have a "Post Apoc Guild" or a "Steam Punk guild" ,however i don't really see the point in any builders guild, but i must complement the biased theme take on it

I'm not trying to discourage or throw down the idea or whatever these are just my thoughts on it, very much IMHO

Guild off

Shall I remove your Space tag to show that you don't believe in "theme favoritism":laugh:

As for there being no other movements of this type... who stopped them? They should have organized earlier, because now it would just be a blatant attempt to copy the FBG. So
