Most expensive part on BL

Recommended Posts

Probably the most expensive part on Bricklink "should" be an Opel Kapitän vehicle of 1957. It was produced by LEGO Norway, but never put into production. As of now there are 9 known, including 1 green, 1 orange, 2 red and 5 yellow.

Here are all 9 known examples....

These Norway produced LEGO autos were not put into production. I finally found out why just last week. It seems that only 2 passenger vehicles were put into production by TLG in the 1950s.... the 258/275 VW Bus... which had no glass... just plastic (looking like glass) all around the vehilce, and the (1957 introduced) VW Beetle, which was a 1 piece upper body vehicle made of clear plastic... and the metal looking portions of the cars were painted over.

It was not until late 1961 that TLG (in the Development Center in Hohenwestedt Germany (near the Danish border)... developed a patent for a 2 piece top to LEGO vehicles... a plastic part to look like the painted metal... and a clear glass insert that snapped in place inside the painted part.

It was this patent and discovery (at the Development center in Hohenwestedt Germany (below) that lead to 15 different LEGO autos and 7 LEGO Mercedes vehicles being put into production....

So anyway... the 1957 Opel Kapitän car was before its' time, and never made it past the prototype phase. So all 9 known examples (several damaged) are very highly collectible... some worth over $7000 each.

More new info for my Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide....

I wouldn't consider a minifig or a car a single part, as mentioned in the title...

The first one isn't a minifigure—it's a Galidor action figure. I guess a seller's either trolling or perhaps added some extra zeroes accidentally!

According to the link there is only one available. But $15,000 is crazy and is probably a joke. What I find even crazier is that someone paid $60 for one in the past six months.

I immediatly thought of sand green 1x8's and 1x2 bricks with grooves when I saw the title to this post. Even though they aren't the highest priced item on bricklink anyone who has Bricklinked the Green Grocer knows how annoyingly expensive these parts are.

Now that the Haunted House is retired, that color is going to be even harder to find. It only used 1x6 bricks, but they aren't cheap either..

I think it's not so much the $ value, it's more the comparison of one brick to another. For example, the aforementioned sand green bricks you're looking at a minimum of around US$2.50 each for the 1x8s and US$2.00 for the 1x2s, however if you were to buy these bricks in white you would find them for US$0.20 and US$0.12 respectively. So that's a 1150% mark up from one colour to another for the 1x8s and 1567% mark up for the 1x2s... That's pretty massive...

The brick I immediately thought of was the yellow hand trolley used in the Train Engine Shed 10027. The common red version of this brick sells for around US$0.30 whereas the cheapest yellow one is US$15.00 which makes it a mark up of 4900%!!!

I'm sure there are other examples of this...

I just ran across another example - the old 6x8 waffle bottom plates are pretty common in white and sell for about 40 cents US on average.

They are scarce in red, however. The most recent red one sold for $36!

I have a red cowboy hat. It's probably the rarest part I own. When I bought mine, there were only two being sold in the US. Mine is in like new condition too. I love it.
