Heroica RPG - Quest #53: Chaos in Eubric

[Zepher]

The moon hangs high in Eubric in the early early morning. The sun prepares to peak over the horizon. Uland is too temperate for snow, but the air is chilly, and the one can see his or her breath...

A number of heroes begin to congregate outside of Heroica Hall, waiting anxiously for someone to appear and tell them what to do. They glance around and begin to converse with each other. Off to the side stands Johnny Everyman, cape flapping in the breeze, cigarette sizzling in the dark.

If you wish to "do something" before departing, we will simply pretend that it has already been done (posts in the Hall/Market, as long as they happen before you post in this thread, are a-okay). Atramor crossed his arms, breath frosting, wondering why the hell he hadn't had the foresight to bring a bottle of rum. McCafferey looked positively unaffected by the temperature - she seemed even warmer, if anything. His new, unnaturally white cloak surrounding him, he turned towards the bearded fellow, twitching one eyebrow.

"Aye. Is this all of you?"

He glanced at the other two figures. One was an Aperpusculum, which he was surprised he could even remember. The other, of course, was Hans, with Poletad.

"Hey, mates. Where's the rest of the 'army'? And who're these two?"

"You too, Cronk."

Mine are good too.

"Oh, and can I borrow either that whip or that staff? Havin' all our opponents inhaling venom will speed things along considerably," he directed towards Alexis and Nyx.

Arthur walks up to the others, glancing at Alexis every so often. There was a hint of giddiness in his smile, but he kept it in check. "Greetings, allies. While we are making our final preparations, does anyone require a recap on what we are facing? What we know, what we have learned, what we may find ahead? It has been some time since our organization's last encounter with Wren, so if anyone wishes me to sum up, you need only ask."

"In the meanwhile, I posess a cloak, a scarf, and a crown that may prove highly benefeicial to our cause; if anyone wishes to borrow one or more of them, please simply speak to me." Arthur considers taking a Nostrum, but hesitates, his habit of holding on to things he may need later holding him back. He quickly stows the yellow drink back in his pack.

"Don't think I could agree more than that."

OoC: Should be fixed, WBD! Now go update my quest and assume Harkenshire listens to his superiors.

"A pleasure to see you Cronk. Loyal and brave friends are necessary at times like this, and you've proven yourself to be both. Not like this little imp," he says glancing over at Atramor. "First impressions, rogue. Some of us have memories that last forever. My name is The Gray Wizard. I was once a member of Heroica. Her name is Triad."

"Ah, be nice to Atramor. He's a good guy." Hans leans in and whispers to Atramor. "I'd be careful of these two, Atramor. They're a little less forgiven than some of our other friends. We ran into two of the Blood Paws who run around your city... and Traid... well, she made quick work of them. I'm an alright fighter, I spose', but she... I've never seen so much precision, you know?" Hans gives a smile before turning to Skrall. "And you best to be jokin', Ogre. We've seen more than enough bad ends of a sword that we ought to know each other's names by now. Felton is the fellow with the funny hat." Hans chuckles. The Gray Wizard gives him a disparaging look.

"This is not our entire troop. McColt and Felton were sent ahead to talk to Bennetton, a member of the Town Guard, immediately.

They're good at talkin', we ain't, so we were stuck grabbing you guys. I told the Gray Wizard to go with them, he's much more of the thinking type, but he said he wanted to check out the troops first."

"We'll be joining them when you're all here and accounted for."

Poletad hops forward merrily. <I do share, thank you for asking, Cronk! Oh wait, I mean Skrall!> Even in his broken Froglish, Skrall can hear the teasing in Poletad's voice. <Teach you to forget who's who! Ha! Anyfrog, McColt did some research, talking to those in the High Kingdoms, and he thinks that we've got about a week or two to rally some forces. We can recruit the Town Watch, apparently the Gray Wizard knows this Bennetton, and then we're going to try to see if we can't get the wizard family around here to lend a flipper!>

Wren must be stopped for good of Eubric and rest of world. Wren means to bring Zoot into the world. No good comes of messing with gods. If friends find amulet, it must be destroyed as well.

Just make sure ya point my crossbow in the right direction and we'll be alright. Wizard, Triad," Skrall nods, "if ya've helped to stop Wren in the past than I've no questions about yer potential. Seems like Felton is in the right place, hopefully he and McColt can rally up some support fer us, seein' as how not all of us are in the best standin' with the Town Watch."

Skrall chuckled at the frogs attempt at humor.

<Good to hear we have some lime then. A few bore magic users on our side bay actually prove useful for once.>

Atramor gave a hollow smirk at the Gray Wizard's words.

"Ah, you're gonna like Thothy...do ya' have a real name?"

He then turned to Hans, nodding, and muttering in response.

"Got it, mate. Those Blood Paws are a bit of a pushover, in my experience...it's those damn, dirty apes ya' gotta watch out for..."

He shook his head.

"So, we're gettin' the Town Guard involved in this? Fantastic," he remarked, rubbing his forehead. Getting shipped off mid-Quest wasn't enough to get them off the heroes' backs, was it? "They make a nice distraction for the enemy, if nothing else. Speakin' of which, do we have any information as to who Wren's gathered? Chaos Beasts, obviously, but what else? More mercenaries? A new cult?"

[Flipz]

Arthur's Froglish was far worse than Skrall's, but even he managed to pick up something of a discussion about the Zeigfrieds. Them again? Twice in one day...? Arthur thought hard on the words of The Regret; hadn't the Progg mentioned that the family would be ideal teachers for training his own talents? "If we go to recruit the Zeigfrieds, I wish to be a part of that group." Arthur feels he has forgotten a critical piece of the puzzle, but he can't quite put his finger on it. I wish I could speak to Byblos, but it seems he has barred his doors to me. If he refuses my patronage again I shall smash his door in and burn that blasted book of his; even as a child I read far faster than he seems to. Not for the first time in recent months, he wishes that the Quest records of late were more complete, and he pats his pack lovingly, grateful for the records he does posess.

The Sorcerer nods to Triad. "I trust you are well, Triad. Have you recovered your strength since our time in the Valley?"

As for who she is gathering: I have been told by Felton she captured a man named Sphinx while in Dastan. We do not doubt that he will reappear. The assassin XX is also rumored to be on her pay roll."

"A major concern of ours are the Chaos users within the city already. I have heard that Zoot's Temple was recently stumbled upon below Eubric. Word has apparently spread of this, and a small group of maniacs known as the Court of Demons has sprung up. One called Mephisto is particularly scary to me. I've stopped in the Library to ask Byblos about it, but he assures me the demon was slain. I believe him, but the being using his name now has a very, very, frighteningly similar presence on the Ethereal Plane. This worries me greatly."

"Our hopes lay in turning this group of Chaos users against Wren. Logically they would oppose her, seeing as she desires to control Chaos herself."

The Aperpusculum does not move from her comfortable position.

"We are strong once more, thank you, Mage. We will vanquish our once sister Wren, and all those who wish to do evil along side with her, with ease. We once loved her dearly, but we are prepared to bring her a quick demise. We trust you are all prepared to do the same."

Arthur frowns. "Are you...quite well, friend? Your demeanor is much changed since our time in Ennon." Relaxing his brow, Arthur continues. "In any event, I am pleased that you got something out of our resident librarian. He has not been up to his usual standards of helpfulness lately, I hope that the Lady's fall will ease his demeanor."

"So...you wish to turn Chaos against Chaos..." Hmm, where have we heard THAT before? Arthur's sword hums slightly, and he casually places his hand upon its hilt to still the blade. "It is fortunate that I am here; I am quite familiar with the concept, after all. As, in their own ways, are Cronk, Hybros, and Tensi." One of whom bears a second weapon of Chaos...I sense his fate shall be bound with ours soon enough. "Is that where the Zeigfried connection comes in, then? If De'kra's explanation was not in error, was it not two of them who summoned the demons Abraxas and Mephisto to Eubric to begin with?"

[CMP]

Atramor frowned slightly, but then nodded. Judgmental as he already seemed, at least this Gray Wizard had some degree of respect. The frown only deepened on hearing of XX and Sphinx.

"Sphinx, I think, is part of the ritual Wren needs to summon Zoot. XX is just another henchman, though I admit he knows how to make a mean explosive. But I don't like this business about tryin' to reason with - yet another - deranged cult. People that crazy don't change."

[Zepher]

"My demeanor changed? I think not. My history remained my own then too, as I believe I reminded both you and Cronk a number of times while in the valley. If I seem troubled now, it is only the business of Mephisto. Maybe you caught me on a good day then, or you're catching me on a bad day now. There is much to be done to prevent Wren's plan from going forward. As for the Zeigfried assistance, I am sure we can use their previous transgressions in Chaos as a reason for them to help us fight."

"We do not hope to reason with them, only direct their energy towards a common enemy. It will have to be trickery, but I have faith that we can trick them well enough, unless there are factors that we are not yet considering. And in the world, there almost always are."

[Flipz]

"If we can get Wren's honest opinion of them, that ought to do the trick," Arthur remarks sardonically. He frowns. "Atramor, XX was one of the cleverer assassins you fought in Dastan, was he not? I'm disappointed to hear that Wren has retained his services. I had honestly hoped that we might have been able to hire him ourselves, before the Lady got to him."

[CMP]

'Oh, irony. How are mortals so expressive of it?' snickered McCafferey to Atramor. He ignored her...shamefully accurate remark.

"Cleverer assassins? Hah....Wren had to freeze time to give his first attack any chance of success, he had to outnumber Nyx on his second, and got knocked on his megablocks in his third. We wouldn't benefit much from his help even if we bothered to try and get it."

"Really? I thought that, with your and Master Valco's help, he was architect of one of the greatest slaughters Heroica has seen since the great catastrophe that thinned our numbers so greatly before Miss Nyx and her cohorts joined the organization." His tone was one of light sarcasm, but he could not suppress the respect he held for the assassin. Not truly admiration...but strong respect nonetheless.

[CMP]

Atramor's eyes narrowed slightly at Arthur.

"That was my call, mate. Not XX's. If I took your sword and ran myself through with it, it doesn't mean you were 'an architect of my death'."

[Flipz]

Arthur seems to disagree somewhat, but he makes no further comment. "Fair enough."

[Professor Flitwick]

Not knowing everyone around him, Thothwick nodded to and "How-do-you-do"ed the bare-chested Nord and the Human in the colourful armour.

"Ah, be nice to Atramor. He's a good guy."

Thothwick scoffed loudly.

"I have heard that Zoot's Temple was recently stumbled upon below Eubric. Word has apparently spread of this, and a small group of maniacs known as the Court of Demons has sprung up. One called Mephisto is particularly scary to me. I've stopped in the Library to ask Byblos about it, but he assures me the demon was slain. I believe him, but the being using his name now has a very, very, frighteningly similar presence on the Ethereal Plane. This worries me greatly."

"And worry you it should, with great reason! I was in the party that unearthed and excavated the decayed temple of that manic worship, and we fought one of the temples guardians - Mephisto. I there is someone depraved enough to emulated this demon, then it should worry you very much. Also, I'm Thothwick. A pleasure, Mr. Wizard, Ms. Triad."

[Pandora]

Nyx steps out of the shadows, wrapping her cloak around her to keep out some of the cold. She'd been walking around the city for a while, re-visiting old haunts, catching up with the people she had known, and essentially grown up with, around the city. She looks at the old wizard, and the assassin .. Triad her name was? Her eyes fall on Hans and Poletad and warmth fills her heart on this frosty morning. The mix of emotions only get more confused as XX is mentioned.

"Sir Poletad! The bravest frog I ever met" Nyx curtseys gracefully "and Hans! It is so good to see you again, but I wish it were under better circumstances. I do not think I know your companions, however if you vouch for them I will consider them brave warriors, like yourselves. I am Nyx." She addresses this last, short statement to the strangers and accompanies it with a small bow of her head.

Nyx looks around at her Heroica companions, pleased to see Cronk again, and once more questing with Atramor for the fourth? fifth time in a row? She'd lost count, but at least she knew he was reliable. Still had the damn flapping dinner on his head, though. She smiles at Skrall, his new hat seemed slightly small for him, but it still cut a dash, and Hoke the gentleman she remembered from the Hall, and Arthur whom she remembered from Dastan. Thothwick had certainly changed, but it suited him; she nods politely at him, knowing the Metasimian favoured formality. Just a couple she didn't know then... well, she'd be bound to get to know them soon enough, that was the way of these things.

"I know a little of the threats you mention. Sphinx is certainly dangerous, but nothing we can't handle, and you say XX is rumoured to be in Wren's employ... so maybe there's hope for him yet. I know nothing of the Court of Demons, nor Mephisto, so I'm glad that Thothwick has experience in that regard.
