REVIEW : 60092 Deep Sea Submarine

Recommended Posts

After being on here for a while I've decided its finally time I do a review. Ever since photos started to appear of the summer City sets, 60092 always stood out to me as one of, if not the best set that was going to be available. And so, with it now being on sale at Brand Store, I snapped one up. Here follows my review and opinions :

Set number : 60092

Set name : Deep Sea Submarine

Pieces : 274

Figures : 3

Price : $39.99 USD, £24.99 GBP

The box is the standard affair, giving you a clear picture of what your'e going toe getting in it. The artwork definitely gives you that feel of being submerged, while also helpfully reminding you this is a part of City with the buildings displayed in the top right hand background.

The top of the box also follows the usual standard of showing the mini figure selection, and the also standard inclusion a 1:1 scale to give you and idea of the corresponding size of the model to the figure.

The back of the box has the ever present figure greeting you with a cheery "HEY", accompanied with a helpful diagram of the modular style building of the set, and how its broken down into its bags. Also included are four action shots which show off the sub even more.

(Apologies for blurry image)

The contents! The bit we are all interested in. Two instruction books, three bags, one large moulded rock face and a medium sized sticker sheet. Book 1 is about half the size of Book 2, for obvious reasons.

The finished model. I honestly could not love this set more than I do right now.

(I only photographed the two divers, but not the submariner, apologies)

Our divers, one with a crowbar, one with a camera. One male, one female, always a thumbs up in my books. The torso printing is fantastic, and I'm glad they added the red stripes to the legs rather than just going for plain black legs. The helmet and mask have been around for ages and as far as I can tell the faces have been seen before too.

New shark printing!

The seabed is a nice little build, with some typical features.

The bones lift up on a simple technic pin mechanism, revealing a treasure chest that I'm guessing was devoured by the now dead creature. Inside are the typical assortment of gems, and the golden 1x1 round tiles are obviously there to represent coins. Why the old treasure coins couldn't of been included is a mystery.

To the side is a piece of (I'm guessing) coral, which can also be turned upwards to reveal another gem.

The sub. What a beaut! I can't help but feel this one of the best looking sets that has been produced in recent years, and there have been some pretty good offerings! The front and even the rear view are nice and imposing, The side view gives off a nice stumpy look, which compares to the realise versions very well. The designer could well of just given us two identical arms to the vehicle, yet here we have one grabbing hand and one with four different tools/sensors. The engine detail at the back is spot on, and the O2 tanks are also a nice touch that help finish off this model. Would i buy a second one of these sets? Most definitely! Would I buy any of the other Deep Sea sets? Probably not. None of them had the same presence as this one did. I'm going to go out and say that this is the highlight of the sub-theme.

I hope you all enjoyed reading this review as much as I did building this set. Comments are of course welcome.

Really nice set, thanks for the review. I do plan to pick up one of these soon. Do you know if the whale spine piece is new?

No, it's not new - although white seems to be a new colour for it. Here's the BL details http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=87745

Good review and I might pick up a copy of this set.

Great set, great review. Though 274 pieces for $39.99? Seems WAY overpriced for a non-licensed theme... The price may be the only thing that keeps me from getting this set!

I think I'll need to make a trip to Wal-Mart tomorrow. I'm running out of toothpaste (see also: Excuses, Shopping For Lego).

Is Lt Coffey piloting the sub?

Not enough of a mustache.

I feel like these will definitely be marked down to $30 midway through the run, but perhaps LEGO knows this is the best set of the line and is starting the price high.

Now that I've actually built this set I have a few comments on the build:

  1. Much more complex and IMO realistic than the 90s sub. Most of the sub is unused room which could contain the engine, and we have the big ballast tanks underneath. There is no space for this stuff on the older set.
  2. Downsides compared to the old subs is that the arms are too big, and too limited in movement due to the click joints. I much prefer the original snakelike arms, even though the set of attachments on the left arm is nice.
  3. I felt like there were a couple tricky parts to this build. First, putting the stickers inside the 1x2x2 hollow panel was difficult, and my hands aren't even that big. Need to get some tweezers for this sort of thing. Second the hollow tubes on the outside of the ballast tank take some trial and error to get inserted the right depth into the arms that attach them to the octagon ring. If its too tight it bows inward, if its too far out then it pops the octagons off the ends of the tanks.

Overall a great set. I just wish they had released a large sub as well, instead of a big plane and helicopter.

Nice review, thank you for it.

I liked this Submarine since the first picture and your review just confirm my first thoughts.

I think I'm going to get 2 of this one; 1 for display and 1 for parts

It really looks asa great set but it has one big problem for me- No good cargo space. instead we get bulky back (wasteof bricks) with almost no play features. It's shame we don't get updated version of those cool wall pieces:
