It works very well but im still waiting on my 36 tooth gear for the steering,the 42 tooth gear has to much torque so can slip teeth on the rack if u keep locking the steering,I'd like to try find a way to self centre the steering tho :)

My next mod is to build a low loader trailer so I can tow my 8043 around :) my unimog is well able to carry heavy loads :)
Has anyone any ideas or instructions for a stud less trailer?

I had one spare 36 tooth gear and using it for the steering provides enough torque to slip teeth on the rack if u keep locking steering. So you need to be careful :) Other than that this mod works very well indeed. Personally I choosed some other/additional parts for aesthetic and/or to strengthen the frame.
The most difficult part for me was to place the motor for drive into built frame but if you can add it while building the Unimog, it would be easy to install.

What is the best way to add steering wheel to the 1st type of remote controller? Are there any instructions and what kind of systems you prefer?

I have used an M motor for steering with triple reduction.
12/20 : 8/24 clutch :  12/20 all built between the existing 15L orange vertical beams with the M motor in the cab vertically between seats.

Took a while to get good supports for the axles to stop gears jumping but works OK and 24 clutch gear operates when steering on full lock.

It's a great mod indeed :) the motor in the chassis looks like it's ment to be there :) my 42 tooth is too strong on the steering so I'll be fitting the 36 as soon as it arrives,also iv fitted a poll reverse switch the other side of the mog to be able to use the normal mog functions separate,

@ giojunkstyle iv also been wondering about the speed remote but it might not be easy to work with the steering,iv done a mod to the original remote where u fit a steering wheel,It's on YouTube.

On his website, Sariel has a simple steering wheel design.

For other vehicles I built and using the more advanced remote I find it hard to use it for steering. At least without any more than a simple gear attached directly over each control. I don't have any lego trains but I think it works good with those because you don't need to change the level so often. Steering on the other hand is a precision task.

The two remote mods are for different types of vehicles. The Sariel one is for something like the unimog - one channel (the one w/ a wheel added) controls the steering, one (the un-modified one, I'd add a stick to it) does the drive. The mod for the variable-speed remote is for a tracked vehicle (like the 8043, or the 8275 bulldozer) where you have a separate motor for each SIDE of the vehicle and use them to drive and steer.

Have tested 1paza62's version only with 8-40 gearing. That was a little "skip-ish on the gears".
Doug72 version is turning the wheels quite nicely but you have to remember that the unimog is putting a lot of weight on the wheels.

Whish there was a way to replace the slugish knob-gears: they keep holding this up under full load!

Thanks for providing that file.

Due to weight of Unimog it can difficult to turn the steering when vehicle is stationary but it works OK when Unimog in motion.

Have u a parts list as it's quiet hard too see whats needed to build this?is it much of an improvement over using xl motor?

You could have use the LDD-file i provided....

But I guess this will do too!


Remember:
These parts are gearbox only.
And remember that the white part are LDD-replacement for other parts.

As said before: this is more stable and less skipping than the xl-version.
