In fact, that makes comparisons with "Gladiator" even more valid... gladiator takes down Commodus by winning over the crowd.
I could go on all day about what's "borrowed" from what; it doesn't lessen either BR or THG in my opinion, but there is one important distinction: THG is much more focused on the politics (not sure that's the correct word for it), the "games" did not even start until well into the second half; BR is much more focused on the "battle."
