My LEGO Town - WIP

Recommended Posts

Hello there.

I did post a long time ago (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40018) with some initial photos of how my WIP town was way back in March.

Since then I have made some changes, with the addition of new parts and kits, such as Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium, and things are gradually getting to the stage where I am happy with certain bits of it. However, there are always tiny little changes that I want to make, which end up turning into big changes (Ala my port with the moving of the yellow and red cranes, and more port plates).

There is still a lot of work to do, and I need to get my airport built but that will take some time.

The big problem I have at the moment is the space within the 4 large grey plates. I would like to build a little town centre, with modular buildings surrounding a small communal ground in the centre (Forming a roundabout for traffic). The problem is my distinct lack of creativity and time to create some of the MOC Modular Buildings that I see people in this forum making. (For instance this model: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=49498 - Truely awesome!). There used to be a time that people uploaded decent modular buildings on to the actual LEGO website and you could download them, and then obviously build them. However, I returned to LDD after many, many months and discovered that the LEGO Gallery had been wiped of people's models and there was nothing decent (Like the previous mentioned model) to download. I know it is cheeky to ask, and people will quite rightly tell me to do my own work, but is there anywhere online where I can find quality modular building LDD files to include in my town? At present, I believe I have space for 5 additional "Market Street-style" buildings, but with the LG producing one or two a year, my quest to get the town done could take years! From what I have seen of one female designer, I am thinking of using the Town Plan Cinema and Town Hall to create a proper modular cinema and proper town hall to add to the town (Which means they wouldn't look out of place and dwarfed by the current modular buildings!)

Anyway. Enough of my prattling on and here are some pictures of my town so far: (Mods feel free to change/remove pictures if I have breached any rules I have not considered)

Hopefully by Summer next year, the LG will have released a new modular building (Pet Shop rumours...) that will help take up some space in the grey area.

I am definitely a 80/90s kits fan (What happened in 1997?!), but I have collected a few kits since then (Obviously the modular buildings), and some kits not on show in those pictures (I have LOTS of vehicles to put into place once I am happy with the look of the town, but that will never happen!).

And as can be seen in some pictures, my LEGO Town luckily wasn't hit by the Recession otherwise the icredibly large civil service consisting of Police and Fire staff would have had to have been dramatically cut back!

Very nice fusion of modular, modern city and classic town 'Red Fox' :sweet: ....a 30 year crosssection of the Lego world.....excellent positioning and trimming....but I must ask is this town/city near the ocean....the palm trees ?

Great work, but please watch your picture sizes, you don't what to upset 'Hinckley', 'WhiteFang' or 'The Brickster' do we now !

I'm a conformist! ! :sweet:

Brings me back memories! I own a good chunk of those 90s sets from the port to the gas station and police stations. (My sister technically owned her Paradisa sets lol)

I love the waterfront/harbor, especially the picture with the ships facing the camera. I wish I had the space and the ships to create such a nice waterfront.

Beautiful Classic Town RF. I see some fine sets as part of your collection.

EB does have an 800x600 image size limit though, if you could please resize your images - much appreciated.

It is certainly a fine town though. I spent half of Sunday reworking my tabletown. Just dusting took a long time, then finally deciding on a workable layout that fits most of my more recent City sets and modulars.

Yours needs a train now.

EDIT: oops - just spotted it.

Regarding the resizing of photos, I am getting on to that now. I thought there might be a problem so thank you for no ear bashing! I may be alright dealing with certain computery things, but photos have always been an issue with me. Live and learn!

Hello there! Since you've taken the time to reply to my post, I'll reply to your's!

TheBrickster - Is that now OK?

I have to say that I too find it a nightmare to keep the bricks and plates clean. And the spiders in my loft find the buildings and trees perfect for web building!

And regarding the trains - I didn't have any train sets before I moved my sets up into my loft, but after purchasing the two freight loading depot sets which came with tracks and a train, I thought it would be silly not to have a track running around town. And I had always liked the Metroliner and seeing how it still commanded a premium price on eBay, I thought it would be nice to have one. And so I gradually I built up the track around town and got some trains. But how expensive are setting up a train network around a town?! Yikes! And now 9V track is no longer produced! Ah well...no town would be complete without a train network!

lightningtiger - My town is surrounded by water on three sides and mountains/breeze blocks to the other default_blink.gif, and due to its climate, the palm trees have flourished! I chose them as to create avenue effects around town and once I get to the stage with being happy with how my town is set up, I will get my other flora put around town, as at the moment it looks quite barren. And there is a big bag of flora to use up!

And I do have to say that pre 1997, the Town kits were very good and it was what I grew up with. But since Cafe Corner, there seems to be some much better quality sets. All the sets I couldn't buy when I was a boy due to squandering pocket money on sweets, I now can thanks to eBay and some sellers keeping their items in good condition for nearly 30 years!

meyerc13 - Thank you for the comments! I do like the harbour and it is the area that I first started with when I built my town. The big blue container ship at the back with the yellow cranes unloading is one of the most expensive non-modular buildings I have purchased, but it had all its stickers on and was in very good condition. It just had to be brought! The docks are still very much a WIP but I now have the majority of the items I want for my docks, except sets 4015 and 4022.

woootles - Although it was aimed at girls, I've been using the Paradisa sets to create on the east side a recreation/water sports area, with sandy beach. But that may well change with the future "Marina" set that should hopefully be released in 2011. We shall wait and see what it looks like in comparison to the Sail and Fly Marina.

escortmad79 and Cancerkitty - Many thanks for your comments!

Fuzzylegobricks - That's the one! However, there doesn't seem to be any of the designs that people used to upload on there for Modular Buildings (Its the only section I would look at), that used to be worth downloading. Though there does seem to be quite a few of the LDD Shop Model that people have uploaded...default_look.gif

Leg Godt Gud - Thanks! The layout is the result of several adjustments but has generally followed the premise of a long straight road through the centre of the town and roads coming off the side. I can take a picture of the town as a whole, but the problem is there are wooden beams in the way, and if they were taken down to provide a large uninterupted view of my town, the roof would unfortunately fall down! I might get some pictures of the whole town taken tomorrow default_classic.gif

Novastar - Merci beaucoup! The loft was the only place to be able to put all my sets, but I am slightly regreting not getting the loft lined and turned into a proper room. This might have reduced the dirt build up on the town, but also if it gets done in the future, it will mean the town won't have to be dismantled in order to do it! So I would advise getting it plasterboard lined first!!

buddy - Thanks! default_classic.gif Any future developments will probably centre around the grey space being lined with modular buildings. I've been looking at my Town Plan Cinema today and I can definitely see a 3 storey building being able to be built from it. It could look really good!

Very impressive Town layout Red Fox! I agree it's nice to see the combination of modern city, classic town, and modular building sets together. What I really like about this layout is the use of the classic green roadplates. Personally, I like them better than the newer more city-specific road plates. Great job on setting this up and keep on expanding this!

TheBrickster - Is that now OK?

Yes - thanks.

If you end up buying a new train, the Cargo Train looks really nice. Unfortunately, many stores are sold out for Christmas (at least in my area), and my luck with SAH has been really bad. I've got the Emerald running around mine right now, but I switch it out periodically. I don't have the space to run two trains on the same table. I'm been looking at Playmobil lately - since I broke out the old Christmas Train for the tree (it's an annual holiday set-up for me).

you could search in the creation name section "Modular Buildings" that may help. But like many know LDD gallery is for kids to design so there is very many amateur designs and starter models claimed to be their own. :sceptic:

KielDaMan - Thanks! One of the important choices that I had to decide on when I started was what colour plates should I use? I prefered the green as it gives the town a bit of colour, otherwise it would be grey throughout and the green next to the road could be used as a verge.

Fuzzylegobricks - Thanks again. I tried looking for a cinema and other modular buildings but there don't seem to be any on there like the models I see put on display on this site.

TheBrickster - Glad the pictures are OK now. And I look at the new train sets that come out and would like to get the odd one or two, such as the cargo train, but I don't really have any more room on my circuit for any new trains. I do have a cargo train that is about 6 wagons long and a loco on the front, the yellow and black train that can be seen in the photos, and finally the Metroliner with the Club Car on it too!

We are only just getting our layout down now as we have been insulating and sealing the rafters and have boarded the floor- makes it lighter, more stable, less dusty and loads warmer! We also have the issue of random wooden beams in the middle of the city

Whereabouts are you in the UK?

Ah see you've done what I am really kicking myself about not getting done! During winter it's freezing cold up there and in summer it's boiling hot! And the rafters are a small price to pay for such a large space ripe for development! Renting out a warehouse to set it up in instead wouldn't have been a bit too expensive me thinks!

And I'm from sunny, sunny Hampshire! Yourself?
