tedbeard Posted April 14, 2007 Finally got it done and uploaded! The morally upright captain who will one day be Admiral, Lord Stackton. Now if I can just get busy and build his favorite ship: HMS Impermeable. :)
Norrington Posted April 14, 2007 Nice Avatar, I like it. It would seem that your profile says your from Fort Victoria? Sorry, My fortress dosn't have living qaurters.
Bonaparte Posted April 14, 2007 Excellent result Mr. Tedbeard! Lots of details in a small avatar, but it still looks good. Did you start from a picture of the minifig? Looks like it is too clean to be a picture.
Mister Phes Posted April 14, 2007 Ted Beard, which mini-figure head are using for old Stackton?
oo7 Posted April 14, 2007 Nice background choice for a good looking minifig. Well done. As for the head, it's the Star Wars Episode I Qui-Gon Jinn. *CLICK*
Norrington Posted April 14, 2007 He's using good ol' Qui-gon-Jinn. edit: oo7 beat me to it! Untill next time oo7!
tedbeard Posted April 15, 2007 Did you start from a picture of the minifig?Looks like it is too clean to be a picture. Yep, I used my digital camera at very close range in a light box. A little photoshop magic and voila! I was quite pleased. :-$ For these close up shots I am thinking a tiny tripod would be very useful as I have trouble holding the camera still enough. I must have had to retake several shots several times (I was also taking pics of other figs.) oo7 got the head right first guess. I am planning to do an older (admiral's portrait) version using the Old Ben Kenobi head with grey hair and the fancy hat.
Mister Phes Posted April 15, 2007 Maybe I'm nitpicking here but I think the Captain looks like he's standing in the shade. Unless there's something blocking the light hitting him he should be a little brighter. Not that I would say its an issue, or even needs to be changed, I just thought I'd mention it. Next time I have my light box set up I will try again. I think the position/direction of the lamps actually makes a big difference.
Mister Phes Posted April 15, 2007 How have you got your light box set up? I may need to create one myself but I don't really know much about them.
tedbeard Posted April 16, 2007 How have you got your light box set up? I may need to create one myself but I don't really know much about them. I bought a kit from a local camera supply store. It is being marketed for people selling on eBay but came with the box and two lamps: (pic is also link to more info from random supplier - we bought it at local shop.) We bought the basic kit and then went back and bought the 24" box as well which will fit a MOC on a 32x32 baseplate or bigger.

tedbeard Posted April 16, 2007 out of interest how much did that cost i need to get one? ;-) Keeping in mind I am speaking in Canadian dollars, I think we spent over $350 for the basic kit and the large size light box. We were feeling flush with cash after receiving an inheritance and the wife didn't trust my DIY abilities - probably wise becasue she would likely still be waiting over a year later. X-D The large light box by itself was, I think, more money than the basic kit. Very expensive, I thought but it should last for years and the alternate background cloths (six colours total) is a really neat feature.
Mister Phes Posted April 16, 2007 I bought a kit from a local camera supply store. It is being marketed for people selling on eBay but came with the box and two lamps: Do you happen to know what the wattage on the lamps are?
tedbeard Posted April 16, 2007 Do you happen to know what the wattage on the lamps are? Nope, but it came with two compact flourescent bulbs marked 26W.
Mister Phes Posted April 17, 2007 Hmmmm... That's interesting... I'm using a 500W light, I thought it would be too bright but it appears its not. 26W on the other hand - how much light does that emit? As you can see I know very little about electronics.
tedbeard Posted April 17, 2007 how much light does that emit? It seems really bright when they are both on. *sweet* Sorry I have no idea what that works out to but the compact flourescents are much brighter for the wattage.

I see this problem with many of the avatars. Just to select a few from this thread. I had problems with this to and I still think the head of my avatar should be a little bit brighter. The one from Mr. Phes is certainly bright enough:
El Bucanero Posted May 9, 2007 ...I had problems with this to and I still think the head of my avatar should be a little bit brighter. ... I think your head is just right! I think mine is also a bit too shady... But maybe it fits with the sunset background... BTW: You have a very clean and nice avatar Mr Tedbeard! oo7 Posted May 9, 2007 I see this problem with many of the avatars. Just to select a few from this thread. Mhhh? What's wrong with mine? My hat shades the face! It doesn't have a realistic background but that's not a problem, is it? Yours is great too, he's not necisarrily standing outside, unlike Captain Shackton, so why should it matter? Bonaparte Posted May 10, 2007 I think mine is also a bit too shady... But maybe it fits with the sunset background... Your's looks just right since it is an evening scene. Mhhh? What's wrong with mine? My hat shades the face! I might have spoken in haste about your avatar's face oo7. The shade on the face seems accurate (and necessary) because of the hat.
