Speeding down the highway, the party passes by inns and towns, nearly clipping other carriages they pass by in an attempt to make it to the Akrone Winery and Vineyard as quickly as possible. After three days on the road with their only stop being Bric'lin, the carriage finally comes to a swift halt on the road to Luosh, nearly tossing the heroes about. Outside the party can hear cursing as an armoured woman in armour opens the door for them to step out.

14666472491_25306c20f9_o.jpg

"I swear to god, one of these days I'm going to kill that coach driver..."

The party steps outside into the thick, humid summer air and takes in the Akrone Winery and Vineyard as dark clouds brew overhead. Behind the rows of bushes and grapevines, an old house stands erect, looking over the property. A few workers pick away, placing the berries and other fruits into baskets as another elf in fine attire watches them, her leather brown boots muddied from inspecting her vineyard. Turning around, she looks the party over, her eyes as blue as the sea.

14646672256_bddd1c652f_o.jpg

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Ah, heroes of Heroica, your arrival has been most anticipated. I am Sally Alicia Akrone, owner of the Akrone Winery and Vineyard, a Shadeux joint operation for the past five years. I hope your time with Lady Perin was bearable?"

14666472491_25306c20f9_o.jpg

"Look, I don't got all day, Sally. The sooner you pack your things the quicker I can escort you to Luosh."

Sally shakes her head.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Always on the go, Perin," she says dully, turning to heroes. The elf looks as if she's lacking sleep, and nervous, "Heroes, I have a problem, a big problem. My winery's been targeted by the infamous Alfendi Lupine and his gang of ruffians. I received his calling card about a month ago, with his intent not very clear. The manor's stocked with a variety of valuable items, most of which were my late husband's, but I've got a hunch he's after something more valuable: the vintage wine cellar. We collect and stock vintage wines, most of which are our own, but we have other, now defunct bottles in our stock. Every year as a token of goodwill, the Count sends out a bottle of our vintage wine, dating back about fifty years or so, to each of his associates, along with some other boons. If I lose that cellar, well... we lose our Shadeux contract. Of course, the thugs will most likely be after other valuables in the house, but if I lose the wine, I lose my company. Your job is to ensure that as little of my property is stolen, but if worse comes to worse, the wine is more important.

Do you have any questions or concerns about your job or the situation at hand?"

Sally crosses her arms, waiting for a response while Perin looks on with little interest.

QM Note: Flipz, do you think you've got enough items?

:wacko::tongue:

Welcome to Alfendi Lupine Strikes Again! As you can see, we have quite the mixed party here, with high level 30's interacting with a level 1. :classic: Check your stats, make sure their good, we'll get moving along soon.

Lind, just as a refresher, to interact with anything, simply bold your action, like so.

As well, there's a good chance I'll be away this weekend, so there won't be any updates on Saturday or Sunday, so I apologize in advanced if it takes a little longer than I anticipated to get into this quest's meat. Let's get this party started!

:sweet:

As the group steps out of the coach, Hoke slings of his pack, digs around a bit and pulls something out.

"Put this on. It will help you, and ultimately all of us."

Hoke lends his Medal of Glory to Lind Whisperer.

Lind accepts the Medal thankfully.

"Thank you for your kindness. It will help me greatly."

Lind reaches into the folds of his cloak, and pulls out his Newspaper. "Lacking in the funds to better gear myself, I did what I was able to do, which was research. Research, which yielded this picture of Lupine."

Lind shows the picture to everyone.

OOC: I should be down 50 Gold, and Lind should be up a WP:5 throwing weapon, as per the Marketplace. I should have Guts' Stag Antlers, and he should have my Jester's Hat (Wearer may choose to gain one immunity from targeted enemy; Headwear, suitable for anyone), since we made that trade back in the Hall.

Arthur rubs the back of his head, simulating the bumps and bruises he should have gotten from the journey but, as a...whatever he now was...had not. It didn't take much to simulate restlessness, however--three full days enclosed in a carriage with Hoke's Plaything had left his head so full of whispers it was a miracle he'd retained his sanity.

"Guts, Thormanil, good to finally be Questing with you. Hoke, good to be Questing with you again. Alex...just like when we were at Lind's level, eh?" Arthur smiles. This was a good crew.

But first, some bookkeeping. "Hoke, I think you were just about the only one I didn't lend all this scroll junk to on the Grogmas before last, so here, now's your turn. Oh, and take my Tonic and Grand Tonic, I have no need for them anymore." Arthur lends Hoke his non-duplicate Scrolls, Lens, non-duplicate staves, and Ammit for the duration of the Quest. "Thormanil, you'll make better use of this for now, so as a thank-you to Arx I'd like you to wear this. I still want it back afterwards, though!" Arthur laughs as he lends Thormanil his Shadeaux Cape. "Hmm...Alex, why don't you hold on to my Noble Mask and Zap-Tap Badge for now, unless you want to borrow my Heavy Armor as well." Finally he turns to Guts. "You're by far the strongest among us. You can borrow my Overkill Gloves, long as there's sharing going on. Oh, you might also find these useful," he adds, also lending Guts his Hollow-Blade Dagger, his gems, his spare Healing Staff, the Scrolls he didn't lend to Hoke (Frailty, Weakening, Sleep, 2x Blindness, 2x Confusion), his Nostrums, his Mead, his Ambrosia, and his Tiger Balm. He also lends him Ella's Pie and his Mythril Shard. "That should help us out." Arthur glances around, sure he had heard faint cries of protest, but unable to find a source he simply shrugs, turning his attention to his employer.

"Seems simple enough. Do you have a map of the property, and of your house in particular?"

While waiting for Sally Akrone to respond to Arthur's question, Lind looks around the area for any were-beasts working at the winery. He also inspects the dog for any signs of lycanthropy.

Ooc: My new weapon is a Darker Ethereal Deck(Playing Cards) (WP:5, throwing weapon).

With Arthur doling out the goodies, I suggest a "Borrow from Arthur" sub-category for the PC inventories.

Gold: 0

Equipment: Darker Ethereal Deck (Playing Cards) (WP:5, throwing weapon),

Inventory: Venom, Potion x2, Bedroll, Newspaper with Picture of Lupine(Quest/role-playing item), Ethereal Deck (WP:3, throwing weapon)

QM Note:  Okay, I think I got all this padded out, but I also probably screwed up somewhere. Check your stats and make sure everything is right. I'm talking to you, Flipz.

"Seems simple enough. Do you have a map of the property, and of your house in particular?"

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Don't underestimate Alfendi, he's a talented man when it comes to his profession, and I'm more than certain he'll bring any and all means to ensure he gets what he wants, with the strange exception of violence. The man's apparently never killed a single person.

As a matter of fact I do, however I left it back at the manor. I'll give it to you before I leave."

Lind reaches into the folds of his cloak, and pulls out his Newspaper. "Lacking in the funds to better gear myself, I did what I was able to do, which was research. Research, which yielded this picture of Lupine."

Lind shows the picture to everyone.

Lind passes the image of Alfendi Lupine for the party to see.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"That'd be him, alright, even if it the image is a bit grainy."

While waiting for Sally Akrone to respond to Arthur's question, Lind looks around the area for any were-beasts working at the winery. He also inspects the dog for any signs of lycanthropy.

Looking about, Lind can't see any were-beasts from where he is. Looking over the dog, he can't find any indication that the mutt would be a lycanthrope. He does however discover the dog's name is Butch, his name printed on a collar.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Butch's been with me for the past four years. He's a good dog, although he does drool on occasion."

Lind notices wet slobber on his pants as Butch licks him affectionately.

"You speak as if you had seen him in person. Have you, or did you just see a picture like this of him somewhere?"

Lind notices wet slobber on his pants as Butch licks him affectionately.

He reaches down and rubs Butch on the head. "Nice doggie. Who's a good boy? You're a good boy, that's who, good boy*."

Ooc:* Dog baby-talk sounds rather...strange when typed out.

"T'is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Ms. Akrone. I am sure my colleagues and I will be more than able to adequately assist you. May I ask a few questions? T'would aid us in better understand this situation, which, in turn, will help you."

Hoke looks around a bit, just to take in the scene; a quick double glance to notice any missed or insignificant details.

"You said 'your late husband'? Please do not take this the wrong way, but did your husband have any type of relationship or dealings with Lupine or any no associates? Would there be anything of great value to the lycan or any group sympathetic to lycans located in or around the manor?"

"I've never met him in person, no, but I have seen that same image you hold in a newspaper."

The dog rubs Lind's leg affectionately. He's clearly enjoying the attention.

Hoke looks around a bit, just to take in the scene; a quick double glance to notice any missed or insignificant details.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Yes, Percival Akrone. He inherited the family business at a young age, and I married him when he was twenty one. He passed away a few years ago. I knew it was going to happen one day... just didn't think it was going to be so soon."

She sighs.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"My husband made some lucrative deals during his day, sure, but nothing with Alfendi or any other crooks. As for valuables, there's a lot of items worth a hefty sum that anyone would enjoy owning. Books, paintings, furniture, but nothing I can see having sentimental value to him."

Lind suddenly thought of something. "Also, might we see this calling-card he left, if you still have it?"

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Of course."

She hands him a folded piece of parchment, the quality of the paper thick and fine to touch. Unfolding it, Lind reads the scrawled calling card.

To Whom it May Concern,

There is a collection in your house that I admire quite immensely. I dare not say what it is, but I believe they'd look far better in my company then yours. I believe it to be of easy concealment and resale. I will be entering your house on the night of the full moon in July, and acquiring them from you, along with some other valuables. I'd advise against requesting assistance from any mercenary group, seeing as how my gang will quickly and sufficiently humiliate them and their reputation. Have a good evening.

Regards, Alfendi Lupine, Master Thief

Hoke rubbed his chin as he listened to Lady Akrone.

"Do you suspect there to be any inside help from your manor to Lupine? If not, how would he know about what is inside aside from the wine collection?"

OOC: Hoke should have a Healing Staff as well, Guts should have two more Nostrums and my gems. He's gained a total of 23 items from me, for the purposes of Chrysopoeia.

Realizing that he forgot to hand it out, Arthur also lends his Unlucky Horseshoe to Alex.

"'Easy concealment and resale'? Lady Akrone, how difficult would it be to re-sell the collection? Wouldn't its distinctiveness make it difficult to simply pawn off? Are you certain it is the wine he's after--you don't have anything else in your home that could be considered a "collection", would you?"

"Indeed, what my esteemed fellow Heroican said - if your wine is so iconic, I question how easy it would be for him to re-sell it. Also, just how large is this cellar, and approximately how many bottles of this wine does it contain? If there is more than a case or so, then the difficulty of concealment increases exponentially. And is there any of it in barrels?"

Lind kept on rubbing the dog's head, managing to find that favorite spot just under the ears.

Sally bites her lip, looking worried.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"I've thought of the possibility... the unfortunate thing is I wouldn't have a clue who. Unless there was a changeling involved..."

QM Note: Noted and fixed. I've added the Unlucky Horseshoe to Alex's inventory.

14530829275_1231b5d50f_o.jpg

"Selling it all together would be an immediate red flag, but selling each bottle individually... I'd pass that by without notice.

Nothing of real monetary gain. I'm certain there are other things he could sell, but aged Akrone wine is a specialty. It's flavour distinct and pronounced, but not hard or bitter. A single aged bottle would give you small ransom, particularly anything after sixty-four years ago."

"As I said to the knight here, hard to sell as a bundle, easy as individual sales. There's enough in there to cover a small rack, but I imagine Alfendi will bring some assistance with him when he goes to grab it all. Once he has it, all it needs is a label change, unfortunately.

As for the cellars size, it covers half the house's basement, the other half is storage. The Winery is in a building to the south, about fifteen minutes away, but I can't imagine anything of importance there, nothing one could run off with at least. There's wine in barrels, but nothing I'd imagine he'd be after."

"Perhaps then, we should begin a two-step process.

One of the most unexpected robbery styles, is the one in which the victim is robbed before the robbery. With your permission, of course, I suggest that we investigate one or two bottles at random, and inspect their contents, to make sure that Lupine has not already made some sort of a switch.

If this is not the case, I suggest that we also make sure to bring in, hidden underneath our various cloaks and inside our bags*, bottles of the same size and color, with labels matching the ones on the wine - but filled with cheaper wine, of course - and then swap them out with the real wine bottles. I doubt that Lupine's scheme is simple enough to fall prey to a simple trick like that, but if we throw enough unexpected maneuvers into his path, then he may make a small error, enabling us to glimpse the larger plan."

Ooc: *Was there ever an official name for our inventories?

Maybe my idea's a little over-complicated...

...Not to mention that, if you think about it, I almost make it sound like we're working for Lupine...

Now that would be a plot twist...If Lupine's plan involved us over-planning...

"How would one recognize a changeling? And what happened sixty-four years ago to make newer wines less valuable?" Not being a connoisseur, he had no clue how long wine took to age, but "sixty-four" seemed a little too specific.

"Especially the bottles that are supposed to go to the Shadeux. In my research, I found that Alfendi recently left the Wolfgang, for unknown reasons. I would not at all be surprised to find that politics are at play here, in some way."

Ooc: Sorry if I'm going overboard with the planning...I've read all of the stories that were in the public domain, and I'm going at it as if I was actually going against Lupin in one of them...

"I believe that the card is in the manner of a brag, a taunt to his victims, of his skills and power. However, your mention of the word "you" does give me a thought. I had wondered myself earlier, as to whether the wine was the real target. Now that I think of it, Lady Perin, did you not say that you are escorting Mrs. Akrone to Luosh? Mrs. Akrone, although Lupine does specifically mention collection, a word that I find difficulty in applying to this idea - what would be the effect, the political fall-out if you were the target of this robbery?"

Ooc: Technically, I suppose, if you were to be a bit crude, I suppose that you could say that Lady Perin and Mrs. Akrone together form a collection of sorts...

Alexandre catches up to the party. "Hello heroes, greetings madame. Just had to prepare a bit. I heard the discussions and I think Lind had a good idea. A trick would be good. Also, maybe the wine is a trick. Maybe Lupine will steal something else. One bottle of wine can only sell once. It could be a diversion."

OOC: I updated my Hero Stats page to reflect my market place purchases.

QM Note: I'll wait for Hoke and Guts to speak up before I continue, but I will be here this weekend. Sorry for the confusion, I'm as equally confused.

And Thormanil. You'll wait for him too, right? :cry_sad:

Go ahead and put that Shadeaux Cape as my 4th equipped artifact, adding +12 (4*3) SP due to reputation. I'd also like to further complicate your life by lending to Guts the following, with the explicit understanding that any items are only to be used with my permission, because, well, Grating Stones. 37 items total:

1x Wyvern's Tailblade, 1x Tongue on a Stick, 3x Trickster's Masks (all 3 variants), 1x Fighting Boots, 1x Sticky Gloves, 1x Aqua Gear, 2x Amethyst, 1x Emerald, 1x Opal, 2x Potion, 1x Jinxy Juice, 1x Milk, 3x Venom, 3x Bones, 2x Smoke Bomb, 2x Fire Bomb, 1x Lightning Bomb, 1x Ice Bomb, 5x Water Bomb, 2x Grating Stone, 1x Bright Polish, 1x Teleportapple. I've included an updated version of my inventory with a handy "Lent to Guts" section, if that makes things any easier, plus the cape and its proper defense boost.

Emptying his things into Guts' care, his old Frozen Saber clangs as it hits the ground. With fond memories of the blade, Thormanil taps the young rogue on the shoulder with the blunt side.

"Y'look like you could use a proper sword. Lady may've said not to expect violence, but I'd be lyin' if I said that was the first time I'd heard that one. Wanna hang onto this just in case?"

"Thank you, I would. As I not quite as armored for battle as the rest of the company, I will probably be in the last rows of attack, relying mainly on my two Ethereal Decks for attacks, but I will gladly borrow it in case of unforeseen events."

Lind accepts the Frozen Saber (WP:9, long-sword, Stuns enemies).
