All are welcome to post in this thread!

Jacob Neumann dragged Claire Novak (Calanon) back to the mess. He said to the crew, "It appears that Claire was a Loyal Sailor after all."

"Well, what do we do now?" asked Jeremy Hollis.

15072589160_e87ce398a9_o.png

Monty Thornton responded, "For starters, I'm going to shoot Philip here."

15256185051_a88cf39bc0_o.png

"Oh, no, I don't think so," responded Philip Dabney as he grappled Monty's gun away.

15072589050_50716d598e_o.png

Spencer Delgado had swapped his hammer for a knife and, as Philip held Monty still, Spencer stabbed Monty in the back.

15072933617_0b314886f7_o.png

Spencer pulled the blade away and let the blood drip down. Jeremy exlaimed, "Hey, Spencer! I just watched you kill Monty!"

"I know," responded Spencer.

15072807900_225f2e697c_o.png

Philip picked up Monty's gun and pointed it at Jeremy. Pew! Pew!

With all of their adversaries dead, the two remaining Soviet Spies stood for a moment with horrendous smirks on their faces. Then, they went up to the conning tower.

15072528079_8b81698209_o.png

There they met their handler, General Gogol. He said to them, "Good work, for now we have the capitalist pigs' fast propulsion system. Let us now take this submarine away to Novaya Zemlya."

Congratulations to the winners, Speedy, PirateDave84 and Bob!

I would like to thank Tamamono, for being there for me to bounce ideas off, and Dragonator, for letting me run my first mafia game! I hope everyone has enjoyed playing.

Oh son of a.... I suck!

I was actually starting to think at the end that I was getting totally conned by Speedy there, even said so to him in a PM... turns out I was megablocking right! You blasted scummos must have been laughing like crazy for DAYS as we picked off the wrong people.

Any reason Adrienne isn't listed as a winner? Bob was....

can't wait to hash out some of what happened now in public, but gotta get some work done right now.

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall::enough:

Oh, commander - care to explain the last two day's puzzles too?

Wins

Bob was a traitor - he did not know who the scum team were but, because of how I phrased his win condition, he gets a win.

Adventurer1 was a usurper - she did not win because the godfather (Speedy) was still alive when the scum team outnumbered the town.

Puzzles

Day One: Using a trapezoidal Riemann sum, you should have got about 157m. No-one came close, but the phrasing of the puzzle allowed me to distribute prizes.

Day Two: Vigenere cipher with key "Norfolk". Plaintext as follows:

We suspect the submarine has on board a system of vents that streamline the ship and allow it to achieve speeds of up to fifty knots If such a system existed and we replicated or stole its design then it would be invaluable in defeating the capitalist pigs that plague this planet Our intelligence suggests that the commander on board is fairly oblivious so it should not be too difficult to achieve this mission without attracting any attention Whatever you do please do not start killing off any of the crew

We have received your message about the deaths on board the USS Portland We cannot allow the ship to return to the United States please navigate to a rendezvous between the islands of Novaya Zemlya so we may restore control and take the ship into Soviet hands

Day Three: The letters made the melody of "In the Meadow Stood a Birch Tree," a Russian folk song that was used as a theme in the finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

Day Four: The code, a:b:c, referred to a line a, a word b and a letter c in the poem "A Little Bird" by Pushkin. Decoded, it reads "Вы наши заключенные. Мы собираемся убить вас всех." It translates as "You are our prisoners. We are going to kill you all," which is amusing in a cognitive-dissonance sense because the original Pushkin is about setting a bird free.

Damnit, I was going to reach out to def as well about asking him to join the Soviet Writeboard, but then chickened out at the last second.

I was the Soviet Defector, meaning that I had no idea who the other scum were and I had to somehow be found by them. I was actually acting rather pro-town during Day One, but once the Soviet spies lost a member on Night One, I knew that I had to sacrifice myself so they could win. The scum couldn't win if they didn't find me, so I didn't even defend myself on Day Two.

I felt rather useless as a member of the scum. Not only was I not given a Night Action (usually, defectors are given the role of trying to find the scum, but you already told me you realized this), but I would have prevented a scum victory had I lived.

Let this be a lesson to all newcomers. Def might have been the leader of the town block last game, but that doesn't mean he's going to be town in every game he plays.

Well god dammit, I thought there would only be one Soviet left. Well, good game all and I am sorry for not being that active until the end.

I KNEW IT!

I even wrote on the board that day 2 was a reference to Hunt for red october and that day 3 was a portion of Tchaikovsky's symphony ... but I never came close to the actual answer!!!

I actually played the day 3 riddle on the piano and violin or several friends but no one recognized it.

Hat tip folks, you played an incredibly impressive game, well done. Who investigated and cleared spencer? We were conned from the start.

If we were 2 (speedy, adventurer or me) left versus one town we did not need you, if you were dead we did not need you. There were more scenarios in which we could win without the defector than with so it was wiser to no actively look for you. Your death actually helped us a great deal in cementing Speedy as a loyal townie and as a core member of the town block.

What a game!

Ok, here's the summary of the game from my perspective...

I was the vig, obviously. On day 2, I was contacted by jluckhaupt that he'd gotten a 1 shot investigation as a result of the first puzzle and cleared me. He also said he was a watcher and had seen mencot target speedy in the night. From that, I figured mencot was either protector or investigator. And then jluckhaupt said he talked to mencot (this was after speedy/mencot were fighting in thread and then stopped) and mencot said speedy had been cleared. NEVER even crossed my mind that speedy could be a godfather at that point :ugh: After that it was all over because I was talking frequently with speedy. And I never re-questioned my trust in him until it was too late because there were so many other people being suspicious, quiet, or both. Basically, this whole game was so silent in public that one big mistake in private doomed us.

That was actually part of why I sacrificed myself. I knew it would make the scum look good, but what I didn't know was that it would make def look as good as he did.

And then Mencot died so quickly, we had no chance to follow up. Man, we were screwed so early on. I was regularly contacting Speedy, so blind. I shoulda known something was wrong after the first kill was so far off.

Had it not been for speedy being cleared so fast we would for sure had lost.

Your post proves how crazy it was to have one shot investigation as of day one. After night 1 there was a solid town block and had it not been for speedy being the godfather, you were on the winning track. Speedy and I were worried, a lot, throughout the game but as time went by he just started to get crazy .... You should see the whiteboard; it's not pretty!

There's a valuable lesson here; don't put all your eggs in the same basket. By day 2 we knew all the PRs.

Let this be a lesson to all newcomers. Def might have been the leader of the town block last game, but that doesn't mean he's going to be town in every game he plays.

They had great reason to trust me. I was investigated and cleared, then I led a lynch on you  When someone leads a lynch on scum day 2, it's hard not to trust them.

What the, I mean how the...what?!?! What?! I suck, you all suck, I hate everything!!! I've got a lot of rereading and learning to do.

I'm sorry, and I'm sorry to MostlyTechnic. I've never won as a surviving scum, so the first couple of (real) days, it was nerve wracking, but by the end, I was pretty relaxed. I kept repeating what I was saying to Dave on the Writeboard. "I can't see how we can lose." "We have this locked."

I did okay, but the town made a few mistakes which allowed me to do much better:

-Mencot, in PM, said, this game is too small to have a godfather. What?! I know you were trying Mencot, but you missed some fundamentals, and I didn't correct you.

-Bob, you were going to claim traitor to me? Well, you could have on day two, but I would have lynched you even harder. Your death was super useful.

-Calanon, you were the reason we won. Nobody had claimed doctor, even though we had claimed power roles in public and a successful lynch. You never contacted anyone. So as of day two, Dave was the doctor. I didn't tell the 'town block' until day three, but we had time coded PMs to share at a moment's notice if needed. Anyway, if you had been active, you could have spun the game on day four, and won the game. It might suck to hear it, but we finally won because you just rolled over day four. Be active!

To Jluck and Monty, you guys needed to be more conservative! I kept telling Monty in PM, be conservative! No need to put an unclaimed vanilla in the town block, I had zero reason to be in contact with Monty. It should have been Mencot talking to me and Jluck, and then Monty talking to Jluck and Mencot, and keeping a layer of distance. No reason to even have me know about Jluck or Monty at all. And Monty, I kept telling you, you don't have to kill every night, but you did anyway, except that last night when we blocked you, since you actually targeted scum. You guys are good sports, and I knew how screwed over you were going to feel by around the end of day three. Hopefully you don't feel dirty over this.

James, I think you were a fair host, and I know why you had free investigations everyday: so we could find the traitor. But three free night actions a day was too much for a game with so few players. If the number of winners shrank each day to zero day four, maybe that would work. But having those abilities out there was a lot to deal with. And having a game possibly won through puzzle solving rather than gameplay would have been very unsatisfying for all around; it's mafia, not sudoku! Other than that, maybe you should have mentioned a traitor in the opening, so town at least had a concept that there might be four scum. The town was certain that three was the number. I've never played with a traitor though, so I don't know in that regards.

But I think you did a good job hosting, especially staying out of the scum boards

Your actions weren't dirty at all, I'd be very proud of myself in your position given then way you balanced the whole act. Thank you for the advice, I plan on playing every time a game opens so I hope to make some improvements, and you and Dave gave a lesson I won't soon forget!

Thanks jamesn, you did a great job. I enjoyed the puzzles and with the difficulty, I'm sure most abilities were not claimed. I got day 1 and 2, came close on 3, but was losses on day 4. Could scum solve the puzzle and if so what did they get? Also, I was told I was blocked in my watching, but my investigation came back as no result instead of blocked, is that standard wording for any night action that is blocked?

No problem - it's a game. I was shocked and a little ticked to see myself die when I opened the thread today... but it's all part of the game. I probably should have been more conservative with you, but I thought you were darn clear after the evidence we had, you're far more experienced than I am, so I was looking to see how your opinions on people compared to mine.

And no, I had NO IDEA there were 4 we should be looking for. I guess early on I figured there were 3 or 4, but then as we got smaller and smaller, I assumed there was just 1 scum left since I thought most people were clear.

jamesn - just curious, how much did you actually think people would solve the puzzles? I COMPLETELY had the reimann sum thing on day 1, but made a moron error (divided by 12 instead of 11 hours). Went back just now to my math and I would have said 157.95, so that's pretty darn close! And I still maintain you're scum since you're trying to use metric on an 80s American boat, where we use feet and miles and gallons and pounds, the way the good Lord intended!

The second puzzle was easy once I did some googling. That told me that vigenere is a type of cipher and I found a site (on the first page of results even) that I could just paste the code into and it cracked it in seconds. I didn't even have to enter the Norfolk key, it came up with that on its own.

The third puzzle - I've been a musician for years and having notes without a rhythm is HARD to identify!

And the fourth - is there any way anyone could ahve gotten that? Was there something that should have clued anyone into the right poem as a starting point?

To me the issue with the puzzles is two-fold. It does add fun for some people, but it's also frustrating especially since this is such an international group. Even if the puzzles are simple, whether you win or not comes down to when you happen to be online. Which is fine, but I agree that in a game this small it seemed like a LOT of abilities to be throwing out there.

I asked on the board, no one replied so unpicked the one that would most benefit us; invincibility. Not that I was at risk but more song could keep it from town using it.

Here's the post:

" Dave said… (03 Sep 14, looking at version 1)

Got this from the Capt’n

“As the runner-up of today’s puzzle, you may choose one (1) of the following abilities to be used during Night One:

1x strongarm modifier to your night action (if any)

1x night-kill immunity

The third-place finisher will receive whichever ability you do not choose. "

NOt sure which to pick …"

Great game, too bad we did get screwed over from the start.

Congrats to the scum team, good playing.

Why I investigated Speedy was because I have played two games with him before this and in one he has been scum and in the other town.

But you never can tell from his deciveful playing, so I checked him first.

Actually I didn´t full trust the result and wanted to test him out, that is why the hateful argument in beginning of day 2. Also the 2nd reason for doing that was to maybe get some scum to jump on one of us, I know it was stupied and it ended up with that I realized that I have to tell Speedy that he has been cleared so that he doesn´t start going for my lynch that day.

By the end of that day I felt that I will die becuase Speedy told me in his last PM that I am the most important rolemember right now but he should be protected. I though to myself, "like WHAT, I am the Cop and your like a vanilla town but you feel like you need to be protected." But somehow I just replied to that PM, "sounds good"... how screwed over were I :sceptic::classic:

But actually didn´t know whom to trust,I had been contacted by jluckhaupt also that day but somehow I felt like he was a scum at that point that had found out about my cop result on speedy. He never really told me anything more and I didn´t ask anything more, a big reason to that was that Speedy told me not to trust you too much this early :look:

I can´t believe I was so fooled by him becuase I have played and watched games were Speedy/Def has played and he is good and can´t be trusted at any point. Next time I will know this  I think if the game would had gone an other way and Jluckhaupt would had contacted me earlier, before I contacted Speedy with the result, the outcome could had been Way diffrent but cést la vie that´s life

I realize that now, but I didn't when the game began (and I didn't want to change the setup). As I've already mentioned to Bob, a better way to set up the traitor would have been to give the traitor, instead of Adventurer1, the investigative action.

The puzzles were supposed to get harder and harder as time went on and, to counter the effects of time zones, not easily solved through internet searches. As for clues within the puzzles, I did give "Vigenere" and "A little bird" and I had hoped that the first and third puzzles would naturally point towards sums and music, respectively.

Thanks for your compliments and criticism, everyone. I'll keep these things in mind if and when I next host a mafia game.

I didn't say I should be protected, I said that either I or Jluck were most likely to be targeted. That was town logic, and basically true. You were acting crazy in thread, and not an obvious scum target. It's moot anyway, since I was lying about being in touch with the protector. You weren't screwed over at all, since the 'protector' was scum Dave
