video game based minifigures

Recommended Posts

I would love to see lego release minifigures of various licensed characters from popular video games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat etc... These games have many characters that would be perfect for minifigure collections. They could be released in waves like the collectable minifigure line. It would be a great oportunity for video game companies to have lego minifigures released to coincide with the release of new games and an opportunity for Lego to reach new customers from the video game community.

I believe the 25th anniversery of Street Fighter is coming up. What a great occasion to have their characters given the iconic Lego minifigure treatment.

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely those minifigures will be released. The video games they appear in are too vilont for children, and after all, Lego is a toy. :sweet:

Plus TLG would have to acquire a license to produce the minifigs, which means they'd have to be sure there would be enough demand to justify the costs.

Violent? Hardly (save for MK), compared to other games on the market.

No, the real reason I feel these franchises will never see the light of day as LEGO is that, as fighting games that have no real focus on storyline or location, there is too little to work with; they could probably only make a couple fighting arenas...and that's about it.

Besides, in terms of "minifigs", there are already similar products.

That's the real deterring factor here. They need to focus on licenses that they know there will be a market for. Making LEGO fig's for a game that's been out of production for a long time isn't a wise move.

Although I agree it'd be awesome.

Licensing and demand are the real issue. Street fighter and Tekken may arguably be only as violent as LEGO's own games, but the licensing and the demand issues make this sound impossible.

The reason they can't get the license is that it doesn't appeal to LEGO's target audience. Which is why most licenses aren't licenses. Like this.

The last Street Fighter game came out last year and the next is coming out next year so it's not exactly 'out of production'.

While I do think Video-game based LEGO sets would be cool, I think something like Mario would be more likely, as it is for all-ages, has a wealth of characters, vehicles and locations to make sets of and they already make Mario Knex so it's not a big leap to Building Blocks. (Half the Mario Knex is LEGO-Style anyway :sceptic: )

That would be KILLER! And an instant buy for me. I grew up on Mario, and would love him in Lego form. They could work the sets around the worlds/levels. You could almost recreate each level, and you could have Fire Mario, then from the 3rd game there's tons of Marios to be had. P-Wing Mario, Raccoon Mario, Frog Mario...you've got me excited now!

Oh, and how could I forget Bowsers Castle!

I agree that something like Street Fighter would not make for great sets which is why I suggested a minifigure based line. Street Fighter is very popular right now and I think the size of the market would surprise some people. The EVO fighting game championship just happened last month and brought in over 2 million unique viewers. That is just people who want to watch other people play online. The actual market is much bigger. Next year will most likely be even bigger with more people and more sponsers. I would love to see a Lego booth there. I think a lot of SF fans would love something like this.

As far as violence is concerned, I would not say street fighter is any worse than some current lego themes that include weapons. Street Fighter is blood free and mostly weapon free (besides a claw here and there).

I do agree that it will probably never happen though and Mario would make for a great full fledged line.

The only way that I see Lego doing any fighting genre license would be if they made them the same way the Ben 10 sets were. And we all know how successful that was.

I'd like Lego to release minifigs from their own Batman game. Loads of great designs that never saw production. No need for construction sets just a nicely packaged bunch of figs. Same with Indiana Jones and any other licensed theme. It seems such a waste to go to the trouble of designing characters and then to just leave them as mere pixels.

I'm not interested in other stuff. like street fighter or tekken. just the cartoon-ish family friendly stuff Lego already does.
