The candle in the center of the table flickers briefly before it grows into a stable and formidable size. Four acquaintances gather around the light as the wind rattles the shutters and the soft rain pattered on the windows of the inn. The building was silent that evening, except for the individuals gathered around the bar and the lone barkeep overlooking his establishment. A well dressed yet pasty looking man stands up from his seat, pipe in hand, and raises his voice to his compatriots.

15294972691_d267110d9f_t.jpg

"Good evening, I'm glad you made it here safely," he speaks as a hush descends the inn, "now then, who would like to start us off this evening? No need to be shy, we don't haven't all night."

A somber woman in violet garb nods and steeples her fingers.

15314607412_f750acc5fe_t.jpg

"I indeed have a tale to tell, Lucas, but 'tis not for this hour of night; she is still too young, and the candles yet burn too brightly. Perhaps another has prepared a more suitable tale?"

A man draped in white takes a drag from his noxious cigar. The others in the Society were unsure how he stomached the tobacco - it smelled positively poisonous.

d7fpJOk.png

"Oh, come now, Mallora. Always so rigid in your storytelling, always so dedicated; perhaps to a fault, if you were to ask me. Midnight has descended, and you'll be telling your story to the same night sky I am.

Although, I must agree about the candles. I have half a mind to snuff them out."

The door opened, the volume of the soft, pattering rain increasing momentarily, and shut. A Sharkling, attired in common robes and with a purse dripping a substance that could not positively be identified as blood in the flickering candlelight, made her way to the table. The old crone cackled in a voice analogous to a roc's talons being scraped across a large boulder.

15128536980_9a452c4102_t.jpg

"And miss the horror on your faces at my tale of woe? No, the light reminds us that there is darkness out there, a darkness filled with the unknown and the improbable. I do not mind telling my tale, but I divine Val is eager to share hers. Aren't I right Hellsinger?"

The last figure, a woman hooded in black, glanced sideways, eyes surprisingly sharp with that makeup they sat under, and her painted lips rose into a grin at the Sharkling and the rest of the Society. Her fingers curled around the lethal-looking instrument in front of her, as though resisting the urge to play.

15316598652_28afe8fde5_t.jpg

"Uplifting as ever, my jovial troupe. But of course you're right, I've a tale to tell. A grisly one, of a ferocious beast; of its reign of fear and of how it fell."

"Takes more than the night sky and some sadness to scare someone, dear Carlotta. Isaac. Sometimes all you need is a good rousing bloodbath of a story. I like to think I'm the foremost authority on those here." The woman winked unsettlingly to nobody in general.

"Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this little piece....The Tale of the Sea Fiend."

--- Six Weeks Prior ---

The yellow-gray sky was a drab start to things. Only the old sailors were up this early. While the seagulls cry, no worker yet sings. The ones they all pass by seem rather surly.

The four willing heroes stepped onto the dock. Both boat and sea churned like the foulest of stews. Near both was a man who stood stout as a rock;

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Just four then, huh - guess I could think of worse crews."

"I think all of us know how to swim here, sir," Kiray said to the sailor. She stuck her hand out, "Kiray Nastayo. And you are?"

OOC: I updated my stats. I bought 4 potions, 3 fire bombs, and 4 venoms.

"I'd be under the impression that the man's name is Lane." Mizuki said as she watched the man carefully. Turning to the rest of the party, she noticed that they didn't look that experienced in adventuring and combat. Their equipment was decent, but it was the sort of stuff that she used when she first started questing for Heroica. "Uhh, guys if you need some better equipment, I'd be happy to lend you some."

"Alright, I do own a heavier shield of orcish make but it should be slightly more durable then the shield you currently own. This fleuret should be better for general fighting then the rito longsword you use right now. Finally, I'll give you something special." Searching her stuff, Mizuki passed over to Kiray her Orcish Shield, Fleuret and Lucky DIe. "Please do be careful with the blade. It's from a relatively important family. Also, try not to lose my lucky die, that was a costly item to get hold of."

Nodding at the ranger's request, Mizuki fumbled with her stuff and pulled out her Sylph Shuriken and her Top Hat. "Just remember, if you're going to throw them, please remember to retrieve them," she added as she passed them onto Francis.

Francis thanked Mizuki as he received the items. He'd never thrown a shrunken before, but he had to admit, the top hat did look pretty sharp.

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Yep," replied the man. "Captain Pierce Lane, Bonaparte navy. For the time being at least. Last job I had with heroes ended with me losing one of our ships. Wasn't your fault, and it was an old ship, but it was enough so that the brass keeps me on a tight leash these days." Lane shrugs. "Now they're just keeping me from doing my job. Hell, I haven't been out in the open sea in weeks. They finally let me captain a boat again and it's this tub taking you guys out to see the Vice Admiral." He kicked the side of the rowboat to make sure she wouldn't sink the moment they set foot in it.

He then stepped back, and eyed the gear being passed around.

Actaeon nods to Mizuki, "Do you have anything else suitable for Rangers?" he asks, though he suspects she has just given her only weapon suitable for him to Francis.

"Pretty blades, but do you even know what you're going up against here?"

Actaeon shakes his head, "No, not really. We were given a vague description of the beast, but aside from that, we don't know much. Do you have any specific details about the creature?"

EDIT: I bought a Mead, smelling salts, and two vials of venom a bit ago.

Actaeon shakes his head, "No, not really. We were given a vague description of the beast, but aside from that, we don't know much. Do you have any specific details about the creature?"

"I assume we're facing something of legendary and monstrous proportions, but even then things die by blades all the time. I'm not suggesting it will be easy, but we have a chance, as best we do not knowing exactly what it is."

Lane glanced between the party and the distant Fort Bonaparte, jerking his head towards the rowboat.

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Climb in, I'll tell you what I know on the way."

No time was wasted embarking the boat. Within seconds the sun started to rise. Came minutes the heroes started to float; soon Fort Bonaparte had doubled in size.

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Dunno where it came from. Maybe from the North. They have all kinds of sea beasts. For the past few weeks something big has been taking out ships in the sea south of here. It's indiscriminate. Independent merchants, Hinckwells, damn well-armed Bonapartes frigates, fishing vessels. Those targets don't add up, so it doesn't seem like pirates. Aside from that, there are handfuls of survivors. They talk about some scaly monstrosity devouring their ships in mouthfuls, entire men swallowed whole like breadcrumbs. Legends are one thing, but I've seen some of those survivors. are brought to ruin. The look in their eyes - there's no faking that."

Lane spits whatever was in his mouth into the ocean as he rows ceaselessly.

"I don't know what it is, but it's just asking for trouble. Four people isn't going to be enough to bring it down. Not if they've been attacking ships of this size. Whatever you're getting into, you're going to need a lot more to get out of it in one piece...anything else you need to know about it?"

"If us four is not enough, how many people do you suggest? Are any others from you going to join us?" Kiray took a quick pause, realizing she was talking too fast again. "Sorry. Do you have any idea on how many appendages it has? And scaly, ok, that's something to go off of."

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"As many as you can. Melville'll be giving you the details on what you're doing - I don't know myself. I don't hear anything about tentacles or the like if that's what you mean. Most survivors are too traumatized or startled to remember just what it looked like. Maybe if you could find one you could ask them more."

"Does the monster have any weaknesses you know of?"

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Nope. Heard from one of the soldiers that washed up that his ship put up a fight, but it hardly slowed the thing down. Nothing's invincible though. All you need is patience and big guns to kill something."

Taking off her Quickdraw Quiver, Mizuki tossed it over to Actaeon. "If your shots aim true, this will help you a lot." 15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Like I said, southern bit of the Crystalline Sea. Southeast of the Free Islands, off the north coast of the Lane down by Mistaria. Ships have been making long detours around Uland, between here and Dreida Bay, but that route's always been risky with the pirates about, even once a few of you heroes helped old Reno put a bullet in Jolly Roger's head. Spent a few years patrolling there myself. Merchants keep going that way and soon there'll be more pirates there than we have ammo."

"Pirates?" Actaeon says, somewhat excited. I've always heard about them. "So we'll likely have to battle our way to even have an opportunity to see this monstrosity?"

Sorry for the delay, had to take pictures of the first batch of sets.

"Pirates?" Actaeon says, somewhat excited. I've always heard about them. "So we'll likely have to battle our way to even have an opportunity to see this monstrosity?"

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Maybe, but I don't think so. Word gets around - you head straight into those waters, I don't think anyone'll be around to stop you."

The little rowboat sailed up to the vast Fort Bonaparte. It was a centuries-old fortification, but because of its significance, it was maintained meticulously, thus the stone shone brilliantly, even in the dimness of the clouded sun. Lane rowed up to one of the smaller piers, and lashed the tiny vessel to the pier before climbing out.

15317995805_ddb34be677_t.jpg

"Vice Admiral's just up that way."

It didn't long to find him; still. Hands at his back, gaze over the sea. On each flank, a guard, ready to kill. It was clear this was the place to be.

15339024805_4f20126385_z.jpg

The sharp man in well-groomed clothes turned to the heroes.

11059523354_cab5d2d758_t.jpg

"Heroes."

"As you are undoubtedly aware as per my request are your Hall, a great beast has been devouring our ships in the sea south of here. It's put a strain on our ability to keep all corners of the Crystalline Sea safe. I want it dealt with."

He turned back to the ocean.

"Admiral Nemo remains preoccupied. He has not fully recovered after the death of his late brother. I have taken it upon myself to be rid of this monster. However, even with my recent promotion as a result, I do not believe throwing more ships at it is the wisest course of action. Even our formidable frigates could eliminate the threat. Thus I've turned towards your organization for help. Naturally I do not expect you to be capable of the firepower my ships maintain, but I believe that will your talents and natural luck in efforts like this, you stand the greatest chance of hunting down and killing this abomination."

"You are authorized to use any means necessary. I'm entrusting you with one of our swiftest vessels, the Hydra, in whatever capacity you deem crucial. I believe Captain Lane has experience with your kind. He will helm the ship should you need it. Aside from that, whatever resources you can scrounge up and apply to the destruction of this monster, by all means, use them. I'm afraid I must withold the ships and soldiers under my command, but I've no doubt that with your abilities you should be able to find more than enough people, weapons, and information you'll need."

"Do you have any questions?"

11059523354_cab5d2d758_t.jpg

"No. I'm expecting you to succeed based on how laughably improbable it is. Your organization is built on unlikely groups doing the impossible. And no hero in recent memory has died in the effort of doing so. I could risk half of my fleet to destroy this monster, and perhaps they could. But this strikes me as the type of operation you would be more suited for than any of the captains and frigates I have under my command." Melville looked sharply at Mizuki. "If few more than a dozen heroes can kill off the entire Hovels district and then some, you and whatever support you can round up can surely take down a single sea monster."

11059523354_cab5d2d758_t.jpg

"I'm afraid not. It's been a struggle to keep the knowledge of these attacks from seeping into the general public. If we send a dozen ships down there to try and destroy it, it would attract attention, which could be disastrous if they failed."

Melville adjusted his epaulets.

"And before you concern yourselves with why we've been trying to hide the existence of the beast, know that the economy of the entire world is at stake here in Eubric. Over-exaggerated rumors can quickly turn to fear, and that fear could result in a loss of business, a situation unwanted by everyone involved. The consequences would be astronomical. If everyone in the world knew every true secret swirling about Eubric, they would go so far out of their way to avoid it this city would crumble. False ones can be just as much a threat."

"The Hydra is one of our older vessels. I served my required years on-board when I first enlisted. It sustained heavy damage during the assault on Jolly Roger's Grotto three years ago; repairs were lengthy, and we haven't organized a new crew for her yet. It is a quick and reliable vessel."

Francis nodded as the Vice-Admiral talked about luck. He had never trained, but yet somehow a lot of his shots hit their target.

"Where should we get a crew? Are there any taverns nearby?"
