Fifth Rate ship of the line

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some source material for fifth rate ships of the line. I'm interested in perhaps building a model of The Satisfaction, Captain Henry Morgan's ship. I found the overall dimensions but I lack information about masts and the like. Being a noob at this I also am unsure about the general scale such a ship would be. The length of the keel is 89' and it's breadth is 24'6". It has a crew of 100 men and carries 26 nominal guns.

Basically I need a starting point and maybe another similar type ship I can reference off of so it doesn't look like a mess. Any suggestions?

If you're talking about a fifth rate under the Royal Navy's rating system, then you are essentially building a frigate. Henry Morgan sailed in the 17th century however, before the established 18th century rating system we normally use for ships of the line. These ships have an entirely different appearance, more like a galleon than a frigate. There are several model reproductions of his ship the Satisfaction, I would use these as a principle reference since there is very little actual information from that period.

Thank you. I found a pic of the model used for the documentary the Unsinkable Henry Morgan. And I didn't think it really look like a frigate, but that is the only model I found. Do you know where I could find others? I may be sailing down the wrong channel on this one.
