bats Posted June 25, 2013 Hey. I have recently created my first model in SR 3D and I want to create building instructions for it. I have seen that a lot of people just import it in MLCAD to use LPub, but I saw in SR 3D builder that there is something called Instruction Miner. Why do people not use this? Is it not as good as LPub?Thanks,Nathan
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Yes Lpub is much better, you can do a lot more with Lpub that you can with the instruction miner with SR3D. I only use SR3D for building, then I switch software and use MLcad before get the model ready for Lpub. Edited June 25, 2013 by Alasdair Ryan
bats Posted June 25, 2013 Ok. That's what I thought. Thanks,Nathan I tried to open the file in MLCAD but every time I do it gives me a runtime error and shuts down MLCAD. How do you open the SR 3D file in MLCAD?
Philo Posted June 25, 2013 I tried to open the file in MLCAD but every time I do it gives me a runtime error and shuts down MLCAD. How do you open the SR 3D file in MLCAD? See http://www.eurobrick...75#entry1626784, that will hopefully solve your problem... See also http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=83803 for more detailed discussion. Well, the instruction miner isn't made for making the actual instructions, so that's why LPub can do more than the instruction miner The instruction miner is made for adding Steps and Rotation steps and changing the order of the parts. This information is used by LPub to generate the instructions. It are the same META commands MLcad adds for the STEP and ROTSTEP
bats Posted June 25, 2013 That worked! Thanks,Nathan I opened up the file in MLCAD but I'm not sure what to do. Do I need to add steps in SR 3D Builder before I import because I can't add them between specific parts in MLCAD? It just shows the groups I made in SR 3D Builder. Also is there a way to add a buffer exchange in MLCAD? Again, I can't see individual parts. Should I delete the groups I made in SR 3D builder?
Calabar Posted June 25, 2013 Maybe the brand new guide to LPub made by Kristel could help you with building intruction process.
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Kristel's guide can be found here. I wrote a small bit on using buffer exchange which can be found in the guide (although the actual guide on this is on my blog). Edited June 25, 2013 by Alasdair Ryan
bats Posted June 25, 2013 When you are making models in SR 3D Builder, do you add steps in SR 3D Builder or MLCAD? Also, do you make groups?
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) I use MLcad to add steps or rota steps.if the model is big, I split the whole model into sub models (separate files). I don't use the 'group function' a lot in ether SR3D or MLcad. Edited June 25, 2013 by Alasdair Ryan
legolijntje Posted June 26, 2013 I add steps and rotation steps in SR3D Builder. I also use the group function to make my sub-models. When I'm done I export all the seperate groups and import and replace them all in MLcad so LPub understands the submodels (it can only understand mpd files, no groups from SR3D Builder). Philo Posted June 26, 2013 I add steps and rotation steps in SR3D Builder. Ah - I missed the rotstep capability of SR3D. Good to know since MRCad rotstep preview is clumsy at best!
