Not a castle theme, I hate it so far yet I might be buying a small set if I like.

It's not about the cartoons, it's about the sets.

IMHO, of course.

It is a "castle" theme, but not a historic castle theme. Clearly this is what Lego is aiming for, and while I don't really like the theme, I objectively concede it's castle.

I don't hate the theme. I'm not interested in it, but it doesn't offend me. I can think of ways I could change it to make it better (and a lot of those involve too-dark-for-Lego concepts), but most of the models are unattractive to me without serious modding... and I won't be doing that.

I feel like you should have a section here called "yes, for parts" because, yes, for parts and figures, I will certainly shell out maybe 50$. Maybe more if I can/want to. This theme is flush with new interesting parts and clever character designs... but mostly for sci-fi stuff! I buy Friends stuff all the time for the parts too, even though the theme mostly is not interesting to me.

I'll be honest: I don't like the media themes. The only one I like is Elves, and I'm not sure that counts. Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, not one of the TV shows is interesting to me, and the themes all appeal to... wel... let's just say a different target audience than myself (children). In fact, even when I was the target audience I hated stuff like that. Transformers, power rangers, whatever was the "cool tvshow for boys" at the time. It didn't interest me at all. Still doesn't. And neither do the themes based on them. they have good pieces, and some cool minifigures, but overall they are just uninteresting. I very much prefer the themes that don't shove a story down your throat, like the current Pirates line for instance. Or (to go way back) Aquazone. Some story is good. Bionicles (Gen 1 through first year of Metru) was the best theme ever, really, as was Johnny Thunder, and Rock Raiders, all three of which had story... but what Lego is doing nowadays is very different, and I don't like it.

But. I like that kids like it. Meaning I like that it's making Lego successful, and really that's all that matters to me, so I'll shut my grumpy mouth and buy their products, because at this stage in my life, it's not really about the themes... it's about what I can build.

Lots of differing opinions on this one - although I suppose that's normal. Quick question - what exactly is a "Nexo Knigh"? (From the first poll question)

It's not historical Castle the way we see it. It's sci-fi with a very strong Medieval Europe aesthetic. I don't think of Ninjago as Castle so I'm going to say NK isn't either.

IMHO a castle theme implies a historic setting, more or less, thats how is was in the past, nexo knights is afaik the first castle mash up so far. If its a castle than its not pure castle thats for sure and IMHO its very incompatible with previous castle waves.

I am not gonna buy these sets because they are not really what I would like but thats my problem. Pity they hadnt been so creative with for example the last castle theme.

On the other hand I sort of even like this theme - there is something about it - if I were a kid I might get into it - but as I am more into history/medieval fantasy I will give it a pass.

Personally I couldnt care less about lego cartoons or video games but I guess its nice for the kids, so in this regard it makes sense.

I think this whole disappointment (for lots of people) wouldnt have occured if those fantasy rumours were not spread - kept expectations for a 'traditional', fantasy/historic setting high. The expression 'big bang' theme hyped up expectations even more.

I got so frustrated with these theme that I bought myself a couple of 70400 sets in order to have a larger traditional army, even though I dont especially like that last castle theme.

What worries me most is that next year might be very poor in regard to anything historic coming out. Pirates will probably not get another wave, another traditional castle line will be very unlikely for the next couple of years (hopefully I am wrong on this one), another western theme seems unlikely as well - maybe ninjago pirates will have something nice and compatible in store.

Its not easy at all to be an afol during these times

;)

It is fantasy castle, maybe some Howl's Moving Castle. Not a theme I would be interested in collecting at this time. I await the EB reviews.

As for whether it's a castle theme: Yes, definitely. But it also seems to be a space theme, along with being what Eurobricks would consider an "action theme". It doesn't fit in any one neat category.

As for whether I like what I've seen: A big yes! From early rumors I had been intrigued, at best, but the actual set designs and character designs look fantastic, and the theme seems to push all the right buttons to appeal to my sensibilities.

As for whether I'll get sets... it's still up in the air. My three favorite current themes (Bionicle, Ninjago and Elves) are all continuing next year, so collecting another whole theme might be out of the question. But I don't doubt that I'll end up with at least one or two Nexo Knights sets before the year is done.

As for whether I like the current strategy of media-supported sets: YES! Back when I was a kid, I was passionately interested in the stories of Lego themes (from Adventurers to Life on Mars to Rock Raiders), but back in those days there was usually precious little of it to go on! That started to change with the Bionicle theme (the first theme to accompany its sets with an epic, ongoing story told through a wide variety of media), and ever since then my favorite themes have been the ones that don't just present great builds, but use them to create compelling characters and stories. Of course, that's not to say I love all Lego stories equally (while I've loved Ninjago from the get-go, Chima failed to impress me with the way it executed its strong story potential), and whether Nexo Knights' story and characters can win me over will make a big difference as to whether I fully invest myself in this new theme.

Interesting to hear that we liked the same themes for mostly different reasons! I thought the amount of story in those themes was perfect! Not too much, not too little! :classic:

I would disagree that this is a space theme though. Unless they mention it's on a foreign planet (as per Aquazone) or some other planetary events occur this is not space. It is sci-fi, however.

and the themes all appeal to... wel... let's just say a different target audience than myself (children).

It's funny how some people say that Lego sets should not be made to appeal to a specific gender or age group, and that things like age and gender don't matter, and in the good old days all the figures could be boys or girls, kids or adults. And that we should all just play how we like without categorizing ourselves.

But that just doesn't work in the market. When you target specific demographics, you make more money. That's just how it's always worked, with everything, not just toys.

My wife always gets pissed when she sees the Friends sets in stores. She says "why do the girl sets have to be pink?" Well, Lego had non-pink gender neutral sets for years and girls weren't interested. You have to do what works. Divide and conquer works.

Snip

Oh, I agree! I'm not complaining, really, all though it may sound like I am.

It's just that I'm not interested in the theme. I wasn't saying that I don't think these media themes should exist, just that I personally don't find them appealing. Others do. A lot of others. They make a lot of Money for Lego, and I support that! More money means more Lego, and more chance for them to make sets for the AFOLs!

Divide and conquer does work. I agree.

Doesn't mean I like this particular theme though!

Is Nexo Knighs a Castle theme?

  • bullet_star_rated.png No!

Pretty self explanatory. It's not a Castle theme, it's a Big Bang Action Adventure theme like Ninjago and Chima.

Do you like what we have seen so far?

  • bullet_star_rated.png No. Hate it

I'm not at all a fan of this theme as a whole, but some minifigures and parts are pretty well done.

Are you planning to get Nexo Knights sets?

  • bullet_star_rated.png Might get something!

I might end up getting a couple of sets for some of the minifigures or parts, but I might buy them on the secondary market.

Do you like this new style of LEGO themes supported by media? (Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights)

  • bullet_star_rated.png No!

I don't mind that there is media to support these themes, but I'm not always keen on the actual content of that media. I don't think Ninjago is too bad a show, but I didn't like Chima, and from what I've seen I don't think I'll like Nexo Knights.

I'm a

  • No
  • Love it
  • Might
  • Little difference

I like hybrids, and this is a hybrid. But if it falls can be sorted under one of it's mash-up parents: in my opinion "castle" can't include high technology, while sci-fi/space/futuristic can include any aesthetic.

Again I like hybrids, and castle-space is one I've always wanted and played around with in my own designs.

Might get some - OK, will get some. But just a sampling, I think. A true favorite and maybe an appealing cheap model or two.

Makes no difference - Story/setting-wise, all I want from a lego theme is some box art and catalog blurbs, let the set and figure design do most of the talking. I love the Ninjago theme (and a lot of Chima), but I feel like the show built around it misses the vibe I get from my aforementioned setting-informers.

This is a castle theme. There's a castle and knights, wizards, jesters, princesses and everything is castle themed. How come previous themes with magic powered vehicles and with dragons, witches and orcs are historic themed but this theme with magic powered vehicles is not?

After seeing the majority of sets, i changed my vote to "No Castle Theme, Love it, will get some, dont care about TV-Show".

I think this will be a huge commercial-success, 10-year-old-me would have been all over this.

Well, it is not classical or historical castle the way we remember them. Change is difficult to accept. Maybe they should have called it Noveau Castle.

Would you call Star Wars a Castle theme, Because it has, castles, Knights, Princesses, Queens, Emperors, Wizards(known as Jedi and Sith) I don't think you would , the only thing castle about this, is the villains.

I wasn't much into these whimsically stupid action themes at first but this one I like for some reason. Maybe it's just sci-fi enough for me.

So you're telling me that the only Castle thing about this Castle theme is half of the theme. :snicker:

Wait, aren't there knights who ride horses and fight with swords, bows and axes on the good side? As well as a King, Queen, Princess, Castle, Prison Tower, Catapult, etc?

Saying this isn't a Castle theme would be saying that KK2 isn't a Castle theme.

EDIT: Proving my point, this poll, conducted a decade ago: http://www.eurobrick...?showtopic=2886

If everyone here were to be surveyed now, 99 percent of you would say that it's a Castle theme.

Some of you guys are blinded by hate.

Ummm.... the actual set designer says it's castle... :look:

Ultimately is it really important what the theme is considered? If it's not something you want, then just don't buy it. :classic: Lego is considering it Castle, but it's not the kind of castle you want. I'm fairly certain that the Ninjas theme was considered Castle too.

I didn't say I hated the theme, I just said that the good guy side isn't castle, because their tech is way to advance:

#1 Flying vehicles and Tank (shaped like horses and a castle)

#2 Energy Weapons( the axes and swords)

#3 Space Age Armor

#4 Computers

#5 Laser guns and missiles

#6 Holograms

#7 Artificial Intelligences

#8 Robots

#9 mechs

All the things I've just named are in this theme, and are Scifi.

P.S. I am a fan of Ninjago, Scifi, Castle, superheroes and many other themes.

I thought maybe the "knights" were from space and one of their "Castles" is a spaceship, It worked on Dr.Who.
