Topographical LEGO Map of Middle Earth

Recommended Posts

I hope that you may enjoy this MOC. For the Christchurch Brick Show 2014 I build an accurate Topographical LEGO Map of Middle Earth. I measures 2×2 meters and consists of 7 levels. It took approximately 30.000 bricks and four months to build the map. All the main characters of both books are presented on the map as minifigures. Even the path of the ring is illustrated through a breadcrumb style line of golden 1×1 round bricks. The map is accurate as much as a map of a fantastic land can be. I heavily consulted The Atlas of Middle-Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. This project was made possible through a strategic grant of LUG 4/2. I also created an album at Flickr and a webpage for this MOC.

As a big fan of Tolkien I'm hugely impressed with the accuracy and detail you've achieved. Looking at it you'd be hard pressed to know it's made from Lego. It's amazing

I have not enough space in my living room. So the hunt for a new home is on. Lets hope I find a good spot in NZ.

Wow, this is quite impressive. *oh2* The pic of you standing next to it really puts the map's enormous scale into perspective. This thing is so cool, I hope it's kept intact forever.

This is amazing! At first glance, it even looks like a tapestry of some sort. I once thought of having the map of Middle Earth printed out to use as a base for displaying our sets and MOCs at an expo, but this would be way better.

Have you thought of adding microscale versions of some iconic structures to the map? What about using slopes for the bigger mountains? I know it would detract from that awesome mosaic look, but who knows?

Congratulations!

I am a huge fan of Tolkien and I have to say that this is probably the best tribute to his work that I've ever seen done in Lego.

Thank you Preus for your kind comments. The map is actually not a mosaic. It has seven layers to indicate hight of the terrain. They are placed on top of each other. I could have indeed use slopes, but I was trying to be reasonably accurate. Meaning, I did not want to bring out the mountains dispproportionally.

Stunning build!

What I really like about that build is that you have included all the official LotR/Hobbit minifigs to the places where they live or appear in the books.

So very cool. I don't even know where to start except to say that you executed an inspired idea exceptionally well. Thanks for sharing!

My only comment would be to use some grey for Mordor.
