Sets with 'modularising' potential

Recommended Posts

Unlike some of the other members on here, I have limited creative talent when it comes to conceptualising and designing a modular from scratch, so what I've tried to do is to take some existing sets and 'modularise' them, i.e. redesign and customise them into modular specs. So far I've done Gringott's Bank from the Harry Potter Diagon Alley set, and I'm pretty pleased with the result:

I have a few other projects in the pipeline (the other 2 buildings from Diagon Alley, Ninjago's Battle for Ninjago City as well as this years' Mos Eisley Cantina) but I was interested to see what other suggestions people had for sets which would make good modulars. I realize the obvious choices are the Bike Shop and Cafe as well as the various police and fire stations, but what else is out there?

Hola!

Medieval Market Village has been modular used to ace effect. There was a recent thread where a member posted a number of modularised sets (inc Diagon Alley and MMV buildings) along with vehicles, but I am on my iPhone and am out drinking so can't search for it now. Appreciate this is a near-useless post. Sorry.

I have also rebuilt the 10228 Haunted House to a modular building. You can see it on this picture between my double Palace Cinema and a Cafe Corner building.

Elleana, I'm into modularizing City and Friends buildings, too, and for the same reasons that you are. I love to moc, but I'm not very good at it.

In Creator, the 31026 bike shop and café is an obvious choice and there are several threads here that you can view for inspiration. I've even looked at the very small 31036 and thought about at least trying to moc it into a 16-wide.

In City, there isn't much to moc. This is what I did with the 7498 Police Station: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=97296 The fire stations aren't that interesting partly because they use bright red, unsuitable for a modular, I think, and partly of course because there already is a modular FB. Town square 60026 is modularizable (what a word  ) if you get two of them and perhaps place the white building on top of the lime green one. My 60026 mod is in the works.

Friends is something you will want to take a look at. The numerous small shops make nice ground floors and you can add your own designs above or make combinations. I'm about to finish my juice bar MOC/MOD which has two juice bars and two medium blue/white floors above it. Two WIPs are the corner bakery + karate studio + Olivia's house and two pet salons with cool yellow upper floors. Next year, I will try to combine the new hair salon and Emma's house into an art deco inspired MOC/MOD.

I would love to see your creations Elleana! The bank looks great and would be even more impressive with a third floor added.

I have the same plans you do with my Diagon Alley. I plan to "modularize" each of them and have a Happy Potter section of my display. Your Gringott's Bank is perfect, and VERY similar to what I envisioned doing with mine.

Your bank looks great. Other sets which could be easily modularised are The Daily Bugle and the Friends High School.

There are some not so obvious sets with potential too. Many of the large Star Wars sets have lots of useful pieces for making buildings.

I combined the Seaside house with the Millenium Falcon and based the build on the Haunted House. I plan on taking it apart and Modularising it soon. My next project is going to use Colby City and the Mini cooper, I'm still working out the final design for that one.

Has anyone attempted to "modularize" a construction site? I'd be interested in seeing ideas on how people have done it.

Also the upcoming Creator's 10246 has some pretty good potential for "modularization" hahaha.

Ok that joke sucked I'm sorry.

I got the Arkham Asylum Breakout set (#10937) to turn into a modular...I just built it and its currently looming over my Winter Village Market Christmas scene..haha. I just noticed yesterday that it is now Sold Out on the S@H USA site though. I got it just in time.

Mr Tomato Bread did an awesome one.

A few of the Superhero buildings are likely candidates. I wish I could find an online pic of it, but there was a full page ad in a Lego Club magazine a year or so ago that showed that little bank from the last Batman 2 Face chase set expanded out and up to a 3 story corner modular. It looked fantastic!

Other likely candidates are the Daily Bugle building from the Spider-Man Dailly Bugle set. And the Arkham Assylum set.

Thanks everyone for your awesome replies. Lots of good ideas!

There's always Haunted House -- I tuned two of them into a corner modular.

Not really a fan of the color scheme and the ghost theme. Personal thing but thanks.

How about the town hall and cinema from 2008 Town Plan ?

The gas station is already modularised in that set.

That town hall is a perfect candidate. Added to my list!

The buildings featured in the link are to creator bike shop / cafe specs I believe, which needs further work to modularise. But some good ideas in that thread as well. Will read it again later.

Interestingly, I was inspired to do this originally by reading a post of yours from way back discussing similar issues. I bought a whole bunch of Friends sets - multiples of the juice bar, bakery, etc intending to modularise them, only to realise that I really, really don't care for the Friends color scheme. Lime green and pink looks really jarring to my eyes..

So they are all stashed in a corner somewhere, and I am trying to figure out whether to break them up for parts (have already raided some for trans clear panels and the like), or hang on to them until my daughter has graduated from Duplo to Friends.

That Spiderman Daily Bugle was on sales at Toysrus last week or the week before. I vaguely thought about it but for some reason passed. Argh!

I'm glad I've been a source of inspiration! And I agree, the Friends colour scheme can be a bit overwhelming especially if you place them next to the GE or TH, for instance. But don't be put off! There's still loads of potential in the sets.

May I suggest that you reconsider? You could start with the corner bakery. Two sets easily make a good 32x32 corner modular and the colour scheme is pretty down to earth with tan and reddish brown as the main colours. Only the awnings are a tad too bright, but then again, awnings can be bright in real life, too. However, if you dislike them, keep the design but change the colours. A combination of dark green and white, perhaps?

The juice bar has a lot of potential, too. The main colour is white, a little boring perhaps, but realistic nevertheless. You could easily change the orange and yellow bricks to medium or dark stone grey and/or white. In this case, I find the lime awnings very realistic. Think of all the modern and trendy juice bars and frozen youghurt joints! However, instead of lime you could use tan or dark red (are there awning pieces in dark red?).

The city park café is also an easy one, just gt rid of the pink and that's it!

My next big project is now almost completed. I will take pictures soon. It's a 64x32 three-storey building that includes two juice bars (one of which now houses a perfumery), a small ice cream shop (2 x Olivia's ice cream bike), Olivia's invention workshop and Emma's fashion design studio on the second floor and a nightclub on the top floor. While the ground floor is little more than two juice bars combined, the upper floors feature a medium blue colour scheme with some white and bright blue accents.

Although most of these are retired, the Creator houses: 4954, 4956, 4996, 6754, 5771, 7346, and 31012 all could make good modulars, although some are more difficult to modularize. I had some difficulty modularizing 4996 and 4956. 4996 I had difficulty with because in my opinion It needed another color to help diminish the brightness of the yellow, and 4956 also had very few colors, so I decided to brighten that up with an accent of tan and medium blue. I hope this was helpful, and have fun modular moccing

I modularized 4954 and it looks great (mine own option of course). 4056 seems like it would need to be larger to modularize to get anything inside of it. 4996 is on my short list of buildings to modularize, the same with 6754 and 5771.

I have modularized the cinema and town hall from the Town Plan 10184 and eventually will get to the gas station from the set. The pictures can be found on my Instagram (located in my signature). Like others have also stated, I would look into doing the buildings from the Town Square and Daily Buggle.

Another good set that has been done, is the Bank and Money Transfer. That looks fun to do.

Yeah, probably worth my time and effort to give it another go. I have multiple juice bars, bakeries, olivia's houses. I even picked up heartlake mall before I realised what was up.
