G2 Bohrok Concepts -- Feel free to join in!

Recommended Posts

h1aPw6H.jpg

So, those hilariously fake 2016 leaks inspired me to try my hand at concepting some of my own G2 Bohrok. These are really rough designs, mind, and I haven't really decided on a proper function to install into them. The two "Bohrok" present are Cleanser of Fire and Cleanser of Earth, and their designs are pretty radically different, but hopefully designed with enough shared design cues to fit together.

What I'd really like to see is other people's ideas and concepts for designing G2 Bohrok, here are some of my "Guidelines":

  1. Nonhumanoid design
  2. "Kaiju" head from IfB
  3. No handheld weapons
  4. Hunched over or ball-like shape
  5. Extending neck
  6. No clone sets

So, have at it, folks!

Wow, I actually just did something like this yesterday

I feel that they were able to roll into a ball was their most liked function. It's however not possible to achieve without making them clone-y, though with CCBS it's possible to give them some more differences.

I actually did one of these a few months ago, although mine had a very fiddly custom built head. If something like it were actually produced, I magine the whole head section would be replaced with a couple of newly molded parts, maybe a main head part/krana holder and then a visor that clips over it like the new masks?

Wasn't really thinking 'G2 Bohrok' when I drew this, but eh. I'll post it here anyway.

The legs, head, and arms store inside the sphere halves, which then close to form a ball. The hand shields then cover the sides of the ball. I have no idea how this could be executed in set form, but it's an idea.

probably possible, if the sphere is bigger, and the body and leg is smaller. i know it would look a little weird that way, but, if it's for the gimmick, i think it would still be interesting.

Thanks, but I'm not planning on revamping the other Bohrok.

Some cool choices for the weapons on all of these designs. I don't know, I'm not seeing how the beast head is supposed to look like a G2 Bohrok head...

I actually agree, but I had Beast Heads available and they were good/easy stand ins for new molds.

They definitely don't fit the Bohrok vibe and I think I'll make another pass to try and correct that.

Here's what I've been able to come up with so far:

G2 Bohrok Concept WIP by Scott Barnick, on Flickr

While that concept is great and all I don't think I would tolerate clone sets for 15 bucks... I'd much more prefer if they would be smaller sets.

Then again I'm probably approaching this form different perspective and thinking of things that would be influenced by the bohrok, not trying to remake them with CCBS as others seem to think.

Fair enough. For me, the most timeless aspect of the Bohrok and the aspect that still holds up today is not their story role or "hive mind" characterization or anything like that, but rather their functionality. And in truth, there are probably ways you could reflect that impressive level of functionality without simply upscaling and revamping the existing designs. For instance, Classic Bohrok could fold up into a ball, but new Bohrok-inspired sets that could fold up into a wheel or disk of some sort could be just as impressive.

I too would prefer if G2 BIONICLE avoided $15 clone sets (or clone sets in general, for that matter — I feel like sets have evolved beyond that). My brother proposed that perhaps a Bohrok-inspired creature would be best as an individual villain rather than an army of drones — think XT4 from LEGO Hero Factory, for instance. But I'm not sure I agree with that sentiment. For all I know, the best way to get Bohrok-like functionality in a modern-day set might even be to try for a completely different scale, maybe even something similar in size to the Skull Spiders. After all, some of the LEGO Group's competitors like Ionix have done some amazing things with transforming minifigures and creatures.

But overall, this was intended less as an actual hypothetical set and more just to answer the question of whether a model with Bohrok-like functionality could even be created while adhering to modern parts and set design standards. I don't particularly care if we ever get actual "G2 Bohrok", and I think I'd actually prefer if future BIONICLE villains be more original instead of strictly based on G1 villain sets. I just wanted to challenge myself and see whether the Bohrok's functionality truly can be separated from their use of extremely specialized pieces.

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I don't see it as something that you need to evolve beyond really. I mean, I don't consider clone-sets to be inherently bad sets or at least worse sets than none clone-sets. I mean, sure, I do like unique sets a lot, but I have to admit that sometimes clone-sets are a better option. Things like the Vahki, Bohrok, Skull Spiders can perfectly be clone-sets in my eyes. I often feel that people see clone-sets as less creative ( not saying that's the way you think of it ), but they certainly can be more creative. Finding subtle differences that are enough to differentiate two sets but still keep a uniform feeling in itself is a form of creativity really.

What I'm trying to say here I guess is that I don't think that clone-sets are necessarily or inherently worse than non-clone-sets, to me they are just another form of sets you can use. Sure individual characters are nice and really cool as well, but so are clone-sets. Swarms of animals or hordes of robots look amazing to me as clone-sets. What might have caused a general dislike towards clone sets is that we've gotten quite a lot of them in the past ( Bohrok, Kal, Rahskhi, Visorak, Vahki, etc. ), but throwing in a bunch of clone-sets in the current mix ( whether it be good guys, villagers, bad guys, whatever ) could spice things up too and could boost creativity as well.

I personally love a good line of clone sets. Bohrok were honestly some of the best. I like having the same parts in lots of colors. I do hope that they break away from the current elemental color schemes (and powers, perhaps reflecting the originals). Perhaps the Jungle Bohrok could have lime green and tr. apple green. And larger varieties and specialized Bohrok could also be introduced.

Curse you Aanch. Making me want things I can't have...

But the one thing I've always wanted with Bohrok: head articulation. I always love the side to side looking motion they had in the animations and was sad they couldn't pull that off in the sets.

Though the head launch function was pretty boss, so I can't really complain.

Guys, I know that this is only for G2 Bohrok...but do you mind if I post a G2 Rakshi here ?

(Another idea - make this topic a general topic for all rebuilds of G1 villains into G2 format.)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a main topic for general CCBS revamps of G1 stuff would be a good idea. I'll open one right now, actually. Unless your Rahkshi can curl up into a ball, I'd suggest you post it there.

If TLG does decide to bring the Bohrok back in some fashion, I think it's more than likely they'll use some-sort of really specialized piece for the head.

I thought the new pieces introduced with the Elemental Creatures could be useful to make G2 Bohrok. Here's what I came up with :

This one can't unfortunately roll into a ball, but at least it can give headbutts.

You can see a video here, and download the lxf file of the body here.
