[HELP] Video Editing

Recommended Posts

What programs do you people use to edit videos?

I'm asking, because VideoPad (what I used in the past) wants me to pay for their full version, Windows Movie Maker doesn't install, Ezvid can't rotate and flip videos (and my tablet somehow recorded them upside-down), Wondershare has a huge watermark, and I can't seem to find a simple free program that does the few things I want.

So I was wondering, what do people use for their videos, particularly for contest entries?

My wishes are very simple:

  • stitch fragments together from different source files
  • rotate and flip fragments
  • mute sound

Surely there's a free program around that can do these fairly simple things?

I use an older version of the cyberlink power director. It can all what you want and it works very fast. But unfortunately you have to pay for it.

Edit

Do you cant edit the video for your foldable crane?

Adobe has made all CS3 programs available for free without the need for a serial code. I know Photoshop is one of the programs available in that generation and I believe Premiere is as well. I have been using Premiere CS6 to edit my videos for years and love it, so I assume the older version is likely just as good (albeit minus some "new" features).

After a lot more searching, I found Lightworks, which seems to do what I want. It requires to register an account, but the free version has just enough export options with no watermarks to work.

I tried Jahshaka, but it seems to not work on my PC (clicking many buttons, just nothing happens).

I also tried Movavi, but the free version also has a watermark.

I also tried Avidemux, but it doesn't allow stitching together fragments.

Anyhow, the video seems to be done, so, off to write the entry post (after dinner) :)

Recently I tried quite a few programs for editing and finally I settled on Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. Before hand I was a bit scared of the complexity of Premiere which turned out unnecessary it's very intuitive to use and has a gentile learning curve. If the CS3 version is indeed free to use I'd surely give that a try.

Adobe Premiere is great indeed!

You can also try GoPro Studio. Very simple piece of software.

Sony Vegas possibly.

For rotating a video, just look for online video rotating websites. I usually use these free online tools for simple tasks like this (and I always check if they are trustworthy by typing the domain name and "trustworthy" into Google...).

For editing I use MAGIX Video easy HD. It's primitive, and it costed maybe 20 bucks, but it's good enough for me (I see that it costs 50 now, and that's not that cheap...). The main feature it has and Windows movie maker doesn't is a working playback feature  .

MAGIX Video easy HD has a 30 day trial, the only restriction is that you can only have 3 minutes of video. But with I guess there are free online tools for stitching videos together too.

I suggest you to spend a little money on an editor.

You can do all these things except flipping using the standard free Windows Movie Maker. For flipping alone, I believe there's a bunch of freeware.

If you can go to Switzerland, you can download copyrighted files legally so if you can find your file your good. I have just gotten Sony Vegas pro but I am clueless with it so I use movie maker.

Guys remember that it's not the camera no the software, it's all in the edit and the story.

I just use the YouTube editor, it's pretty basic, but so are my editing skills. The only thing it didn't let me do, was create scrolling text (yes it will easily and happily rotate video). I do like how it comes with built in music search, which you can simply add to your video. All in all I was happy, it allowed me to do my editing on a simple laptop.

OSX isn't that bad, I have been able to do most edits for my videos with it, though it's limited, I wish it had more options for color correction. I guess I could always get premiere pro, or Final Cut pro, if I feel like spending $300.

Blender, with a good tutorial :)

Result:

First time you look at Blender, it looks like you need a dozen PhDs before you can even find where is the video editing part of it. But with a good tutorial, it all becomes surprisingly easy and convenient, so here' the one I used to learn:

.

Previous I was using OpenShot; very easy to use but slow-mo was a pain in the neck, and once the video got to a certain (

) size, it'd crash after every single operation. Very frustrating, so I'd recommend it only for small videos. Once thing that is easier with OpenShot than with others I tried: reverse video (for "
" ;)

I like the filming technique used. Blender is really useful for animation and modeling, but the video editor is limited.

Windows Movie Maker doesn't install, Ezv

Why? I have no problems with it on latest Windows versions. It's the easyest for me. I also didn't searched for anything else ...
