Why hello there all.

Like Master Jinzo there, I'm mainly a MOCist, with a heavy Bionicle presence. I'm more into a Bionicle/Technic/System fusion lately though, and I nowadays find myself pretty much buying whatever catches my fancy.

Eighteen, so technically an AFOL, college student, broke.

For a Brickshelf link, click the rather Runic banner in the sig.

I've been a BZPer for a long time, founding member of In the Bricks, a site for MOCists, originally a refuge from BZP noobs, and now a zone for pure and vintage whine. With little else.

As for the ego comment, it's mostly a joke. I do hold the record for the most wins in the BBC contests on BZP, but I enjoy joking around, and often it takes the shape of excessive hubris. Trust me, it's all a facade.

And let's not forget the flair for the poetically dramatic.

And with that...

That's what happens when noone's building mocs. All that creative critiquing energy goes flying around the room, smashing windows, splitting chairs in two, frying electrical items, making people's heads spontaneously explode...

Welcome, to the actual Vader. I guess that clears that up :-D . Feel free to expand into castle MOCs, even Pirate at a pinch*.

*I feel as if I'm drowning in sharp Bionicle pieces of late :-D

God Bless,

Nathan

Welcome.

Enjoy and beware of The Tie Army commanders - they might find it confusing that yet another Darth enters the scene ;)

It's popular because it graduated Lego robots from out of the dark ages of non-playable, hardly-posable, fall-apart statues and into the land of action figurey goodness.

The downside is the age of the target audience = less skilled moc'ers = mocs that look like hollow dogshit = AFOLs not taking it seriously nor seeing it's true potential.

That's where people like me and DV would like to come in. :oD

Has Eurobricks become some sort of skilled BZP moc'ers refuge? It sure seems like it. Anyway, welcome, I'm also a BZP member and I've seen your mocs and I'm glad we have even more talent here at Eurobricks.

Well, our other refuge is drunk on the whine. And they didn't bring crackers or cheese.

Good, DV is my preference.

It didn't go anywhere, it was just expanded. Bionicle is popular because it's so inclusive. A good story, good pieces for MOCs, interesting characters, MOCs, MOCs, among other things. You should try it sometime. ~_^

This negative view is usually held by those who swap one head on a minifig for another, then proclaim themselves a genius.

Bionicle MOCs are -so- much more involved than minifigs. lol. I really don't see why such hatred exists. Just click Jinzo's Brickshelf, my Brickshelf, or Cajun Vayland's Brickshelf. Besides, system mechs all look the same.

Just my .02 on the Bionicle vs. SYSTEM issue...

1. SYSTEM isn't just minifigs. That's the thing; it's boats, spaceships, cars, trucks, skyscrapers, castles, towers, houses, apartments, schools, space stations, etc. And then figures. BIONICLE is just figures. And some creatures. The end (unless you count those playsets). Also, I doubt anyone has proclaimed themself a genius for doing a simple fig mod. ;)

2. I personally think SYSTEM mechs look much more refined than fusion/BIONICLE mechs. The BIONICLE pieces are pretty bad for creating a 'closed' mecha.

Welcome DV.

I (and you may also) notice that a lot of the posts around here go like this....

"I'm not normally into bionicle but that [bionicle] MOC was awesome". Don't take that the wrong way - mecha building was done by only a select group in the system days, and most AFOLs have used LEGO mostly for structures and vehicles, or else small scale vignettes, for which Bionicle elements usually have little value. Hence, most AFOLs don't "get it" when it comes to Bionicle, and I doubt that's going to change much. Still, people appreciate a good thing when they see it, Bionicle, System, or whatever.

The last Brickjournal was very mecha focused, and Cajun was featured. Hopefully that kind of coverage will make people a bit more open minded.

With a very small number of (painful) exceptions the group here is mature and pleasant, and there's plenty of room at EB for Bionicle and fusion MOC'ers. You may even get a convert or two. It' great to have you and Jinzo here. BFS was here for while but doesn't seem to have been active recently. Now, if Cajun came...

Me, these days I'm a Technic guy mostly, usually mechanical things. I fiddled with Bionicle for a year, and still do occasionally - I like it, but somehow I never managed to make a MOC that both looked good and worked well (either they look good posed but fall apart easily, or are sturdy but have limited range of movement) so you guys who can accomplish both have my respect.

One of the observations I made in the past year was that building with System is easier intellectually than building with Bionicle because the system pieces all basically fit together somehow pretty easily, whereas Bionicle's irregular elements are much harder to work with - at least if you are not used to them. The good thing about Bionicle, though, is that you can build something decent with fifty bucks worth of pieces, whereas with System to really make something that looks even a bit impressive (other than microscale) the amount of money you gotta spend is prohibitive.

My impression re: System vs Bionicle mecha is that System mecha tend to look slicker, more space-like, while bionicle ones are more organic looking. Either can be infinite posable (like gla gla in system). Either can look great in the right hands.

Overall, I don't see it as a "bionicle vs system" thing. Obviously System permits different kinds of construction than Bionicle, but both should have a place in this community, and I would predict that in a few years a lot of Bionicle functionality will have worked its way into Lego lines other than Bionicle (like we start to see now in Vikings and Harry Potter) and we will overally be better off for it. Surely even the most die hard system people can agree that the Bionicle based Viking and Potter beasts we have gotten in the last year are far better than the hideous two piece elephants and dinosaurs we used to get?

Welcome to EB.

Gyl

2. After a few kickass fusion mocs, anyone with an open mind will reconsider their view.  :oD

1) See my brickshelf gallery...there is a lot more to system than figs; they're just the accessories.

2) This is a very clever way of calling me close minded :-D! Actually I just can't stand how 'open' Bionicle looks (and that is personal taste) if -probably when- I get drawn into space/mecha it will have to be something that looks 'complete' and therefore more spacey...

God Bless,

Nathan

I just had to single out this risky quote... [warning: entering 'Diehard' system viewpoint] I find this kind of funny (in the same way you found the figs funny, personal pref-not bashing...) Bionicle in my eyes looks like the same thing repeated in various coulours with various names (and a flinger or sword for thrown in for good measure) in a never ending story which seems -to me- somewhat devoid of plot.

God Bless,

'System Diehard' Nathan

^^^ Can't argue with that. Bionicle mocs on Brickshelf are mostly like looking at the same few faces and weapons (literally!) over & over again.

And yeah, Bionicle mocs are usually very "open", as in full of annoying gaps by which wind passes through them. That's where the importance of system parts became apparent.

I think what DV meant about system mecha all looking the same is that, just like one person sees gaps in Bionicle stuff, others just see a mountain of nub studs in system mecha.

Ew... I just thought...

System mecha look AWESOME as thumbnails, but crap up close.

Technic mecha look like crap as thumbnails, but AWES... well, "better" up close.

Lol.

I think we're all thinking too hard.

Less gabbing, more moc'ing!!! :P
