Your worst "did not buy story"

Recommended Posts

At last Eurobricks event (2005) we talked about times when we did not close a deal in time to get a speciel set, and ended up not buying it, and beeing real sorry about it ever since!

My story goes back to summer 2000, in the beginning of my new LEGO collecting age. I was on vacation in Bolivia, thinking I might make a good deal on STAR Wars LEGO, I looked for toy stores, and finally found one in the capital LA Paz. They did not have any Star Wars LEGO, but what they did have was a MISB 6970 Beta 1 command base. As I remember the price was around 30 $, it was on sale, because it had been on the shelffes for so long. I thought really hard about buying it, but at that time, I was not familiar with Bricklink and did not know the value of stuff like this. So I thought it was to difficult to bring on the rest of my 5 weeks vacation, and ended up not buying it! Boy have I been sorry about that for 10000000 times.

At the event we heard a story from one of the guys who missed a 928 galaxy explorer in a simmilar way.

Has some of you done stupid things like that megablocks well?

Tell the forum about it, its good to get it out of the system!

i saw the galaxy explorer in a shop, in the late 90's, brand new... don't know what the price was, but even at full price, that was a bargain by 1998... didn't buy it, tho, i was in my dark age... i got out of my dark age a year later... it was gone by that time :()

Man the worst miss, that's tough.

I let three slightly used mindstorms sets (retail $400) sit at a garage sale because I "couldn't think of a use for them."

or

When I worked for Shopko they had both the entire ninja series and numerous SW double set packages for 50% off or more. I didn't buy even one. :'(

Well, not quite as traumatic as these really rare misses..

But, once I went into Poundstretcher (a cheapo store over here) and saw a bunch of Final Duel II's (the one with the stormie). Unfortunately I only had a few quid and couldn't get any, but I came back the next day with sufficient cash and they were all gone! :() I could have got like 20 for

I shouldn't complain, as I've snagged at Goodwill stores:

Millenium Falcon, some train set, 3 Lego Studios large sets and other such goodies at merely $10-$25 each.

Even better, being Goodwill, one of the movie sets had been opened, and inside were a few smaller movie sets baggies crammed in, with instructions.

But still... at that same Goodwill, I saw 3 of this train set that had lightup headlights (name escapes me). They were only $15 each... but instead of getting them, I hid them under a pile of junk... so I could go across the street and eat at a fancy sushi restaurant.

When I got back, they were gone. >__<

I also did something similar at Walmart... missing out on Alpha Team Bomb Squad and Alpha Team ATV... each only $3... ugh... I only left to walk around the store for a moment.

I... don't leave bargains alone anymore. I've learned. :-D

I once needed a new kidney, and this black market organ dealer was gonna sell me one for $3, but I instead got some Double Bubble.

And now I'm on Dialysis. But it was good gum.

Yoda UCS set (7194), beaten up box, but complete, for 20$ Canadian. I didn't know what I would do with bricks in those "useless colors" so I left it on the shelf and walked away. It was still there the next week and I still didn't buy it.

so I was not only stupid, but thoughtfully and deliberately stupid.

These days they go on eBay for 150$ typically.

Recently I had a chance to buy as many hailfire droids as I wanted at 25$ Canadian, and bought only one. Argh! what a great parts pack.

I missed quite some large SW sets (original falcon; MTT; Republic Gunship) because my parents wouldn't let me buy Lego anymore (I kept on buying it though ;)). Luckiliy, they've gotten over that...although they must've thought I was crazy for spending 160 euros on the Sandcrawler :-D

Not so much a good deal, but the UCS X-Wing and TIE Interceptor sets while they were still avalible. I had no interest in them mainly due to the price-points, but after the Blockade Runner and the Star Destroyer, the UCS bug had gotten me good and by then those two sets were nowhere to be found and now they'll both cost you an arm and a leg on ebay or though a secondary seller...yep...just plain stupid :P

I really had a set slip by. I went to Slovakia in Europe to look for old sets and in one store I found the original lego airport and the old 6339 suttle pad. I decided to get the airport as I didn't have enough money with me. When I went back the launch pad was gone. This was a long while ago so I had no clue that the airport was going to be remade. What a bad choice. If I had gotten the launch pad I could have both as I would buy the new legends airport. |-/

MISB 1729 Barnacle Bay Value Pack on eBay for under US$15. I forgot to bid it at the last minute due to distractions. A bargain price for an extra rare set, well pack of sets. I'm still steaming about that!

The only MISB 1729 Barnacle Bay Value Pack on BrickLink is priced at US$100.

Well, i feel a twinge of regret for buying the city dock instead of mobile devastator for my birthday, but the dock had slightly more going for it (not to mention it was on sale for 60.00 at TRU)
