[MOD] 8070 with adjustable air suspension and rc driving/steering

Hello everyone,

I finished this 8070 modification two months ago (before I joined Eurobricks) and I would really like to hear your thoughts about it.

It has adjustable air suspension and motorized/remotely controlled driving and steering...

You may have already seen it in a drag race video with my hot rod Lucky 13.

Original 6.5 L hard springs have been changed with 6.5 L soft spring + small pneumatic cylinder, for all wheels.

It has large pneumatic pump at the back and pneumatic switch at the cabin for controlling the riding height.

It also has working steering wheel and remotely controlled original functions (doors, rear spoiler and hood - choice of a function is done manually with gearbox lever, like in the original).

It has additional two L motors for driving and M motor for steering, two IR receivers (one of them V2).

Original battery box has been replaced with smaller 8878 - hidden behind panels at the rear for more realistic appearance.

I know that 8070 is an old set and that there are mixed feelings about it but I hope you will like this version...

I thought about it but the tests were not successful. I made motorized compressor with M motor and two small pneumatic pumps (I only have two), but unfortunately 8070 turned out to be too heavy for it (it couldn't create enough air pressure for small cylinders to raise the car).

The springs and the pneumatic cilinders are in parallel I suppose. So you compress the cilinder when you compress the spring, right?

Yes, they are parallel and they work together - This combination turned out to be ideal for this car.

First I tried without springs by just replacing them with small pneumatic pumps (they are very similar in size so that change was easy and logical), but small pneumatic cylinders were not powerful enough to raise the car (nor to keep it raised). Then, I added soft spring shocks to help them raise it.

But also, soft spring shocks are not strong enough to hold 8070 raised (with almost 1,5 kg it needs hard spring shocks) so it is enough to release air from pneumatic cylinders to lower the car.

The main advantage of this configuration, off course, is using 8070 weight to lower the car. It means that only one input of pneumatic cylinders is connected to the pneumatic switch/pump - simpler system with less pneumatic hoses.

I have even tried to combine hard spring shocks with small pneumatic cylinders by powering another input of pneumatic cylinder so it could pull car down when it is on air pressure - I thought that, with help of 8070 weight small cylinders could force down hard spring shocks, but it wasn't successful. Hard shock springs were just too powerful.

I always liked this set, but unfortunately didn't came all the way up on my to-buy list. It's great how you managed to squeeze all additional stuff in and using pneumatic for height adjusstment is quite original, at least I don't recall to see many such vehicles. The back is also way better than the original. Good job!

I remember I was in a great doubt whether to buy 8070 or not, because I was disappointed with the fact that 8070 has no motorized driving and steering, especially considering that my other two sets were 8043 and 9398 (both motorized), but it looked so good on a shelf in a store that I couldn't resist. I immediately added rc driving & steering and the problem was solved.

I added adjustable air suspension just recently - I wanted to test some ideas with pneumatic components so I used my 8070 as a test polygon
