We need a new forum.

Recommended Posts

I think we need a new forum in community specificlly for threads about religon/beleifs/lifestyle/politics.

This way we can have threads that might be offense or debate sparking (in a bad way) be in a place where it dosn't interupt our peaceful little community. Here the main idea:

(Name to be decided)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A forum for religous or political threads only!
This message would be stickied:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This forum is for our members to discuss religon, beleifs, lifestyles, and politics in a mature, serious, non-joking enviorment. By entering this forum you have agreed to be serious about things posted here and to not to be offended by what you read or see. Eurobricks.com cannot be held responsible for offenses made to members who veiw this material.

Whyd'a say? :-)

Religion, beliefs and politics are very personal and I don't see the point to have "discussions" about such subjects. Certainly not on a forum like EB where the core business is Lego. So a dedicate forum doesn't seem like a good idea to me. But you can always start a discussion in the Community-forum (All the chit-chat and fun that belongs nowhere else :-)) as a test-case and we'll see how this goes.

I, personally, think this is a very bad idea.

There is a reason that discussion about politics and religion aren't allowed on most boards. I can't really see anything good coming out of a forum dedicated to them...

With all due respect, I really, really think this is something we want to steer clear of. There's a whole can of worms we really don't want opened. While I'm sure the vast majority of posters would mean no disrespect to anyone, someone would inevitably post something that someone would interpret as being of great offence to their particular beliefs. There mightn't even be any members of the offended group on the forum, but that wouldn't matter, because sooner or later someone would find it on Google. They would then get very offended and tell all their friends, and they would all sign up to post about how offended they were, and how all Lego fans have set out to attack their religion.

I've seen it happen before, and you'd be amazed at some of the things people can find offence.

I respect the right of each individual to believe anything they want. However, if you want to discuss it online, there are plenty of suitable forums to do so. I think you will find the discussion of such topics much more enlightening on forums that specialise in those topics.

Unfortunately most of us are too busy constructing an alter to display our golden C-3POs!

A forum dedicated to hot issues would bring more trouble than flies to a cow-pie. This sort of stuff is what divides communities instead of uniting them. Sorry if I sound harsh Mr. Norrington, I'd just hate to see EB fall apart. :-(

Well, that in itself isn't reason enough to not discuss things. Alot of what we talk about is very personal.

The real problem is alot of religions just can't seem to keep things on a personal, individual level... trying to grow outside the boundaries it should stay in... trying to forcefully assimilate the rest of the world... consume everyone and everything around it like it's Tetsuo at the end of the movie Akira. Then, to get defensive and or violent when someone unintimidated places a mirror in front of it.

That's why it can't be. Religion, beliefs, politics and the like, though often stated otherwise, are REALLY immature subjects.

As for the request for "lifestyle" discussion... I see not too much of a problem in that.

I know I'm a noob here, but I am an Administrator of some years' standing on another, very large (non-LEGO) forum - and what you have here is special, stay clear of the controversial off-topic stuff, it can be a real killer, trust me on this.

I have a feeling this thread is already starting to be a discussion on religion ;-)

I'll not share my views on religion and believes because I don't see the point.

If there is a higher creature (God) or a higher purpose in life, I would be very disappointed if we (humans) could understand it.

So how can we even start to discuss something like this?

Let's not open this box of Pandora...

definitely something we don't need... i complete agree with vadar, if you are looking to have those type of discussions, you should look for a different community to discuss them in.

there is nothing wrong with being a part of several different online communities, catering to your interests or desire for topic discussion... but we should be discussing LEGO in here ;-)

Besides this being a Lego site, there's a problem with those kinds of discussions. The topics mentioned are very personal, and being such, the opinions are held very strongly. It's very rare that you'll get anything less than everyone strongly arguing (or shouting) their opinion at every one else, while tearing their own hair out in frustration, unable to understand why the other person just doesn't "see the truth". People very rarely change their opinion, and even rarer change it when someone else is trying to make them change it.

A forum like that would only lead to spamming, arguments, and grudges, IMO. I agree with most everyone who has spoken before me, this just isn't needed.

I agree with Starwars4J. The other day I was stupid and almost got into an argument over what is better; PC or Mac.

http://eurobricks.hosting.ipsyn.com/eurofo...ndpost&p=171832

As many would know, Mac fanboys never change their mind with mere arguments (and I suppose the opposite is true also :-$ ) and I have had many on-line arguments in the past and they rarely end in a good way. I have never seen a "conversion" either. To many people their computer choice is an important defining decision. Thus I did the smart thing; apoligised and dropped the subject. I think this site should avoid like the plague a dedicated area to encourage debates on topics that are personal to them. Discussions like this have happened here a few times recently by accident. (No links this time!) There is no need to encourage more.

I can't see people agreeing to not be offended making any difference. It's like asking someone "Can I ask you something and please promise me you won't be annoyed?" People can't be sure what will offend them until they are confronted by it. Additionally, it is possible that people might find out someones beliefs are very different to their own, and it is hard to forget such things.

I also thing this would be a bad idea.

However, I do worry that your need for this beliefs forum is partly due to some of the jokes I make. If I've offended you too much or at all, I do apologize. Am I right? Are my jokes a part of your reasoning behind this request?

Feel free to let me know and I'd be happy to talk with you about that. :-)

EDIT: Oops. Reading this over, my reply can seem pretty self-centered...is this about me? Isn't everything?

I don't have many posts here (yet), but fwiw I've always avoided religious discussions on non-religious boards, in spite of the fact that theology and Christian history are two things I find very interesting. When I want to discuss religion, I just go to a religious forum. I think that I can understand part of the appeal of wanting a religious or political part of a board like this. You have a link with others through the enjoyment of LEGO, so you feel some type of kinship; from there, it's natural to be curious about what the people on the forum think of other subjects. It sort of fills out their personality, so you get a better perpsective about them, and maybe the LEGO building community in general. Still, like I said, I personally don't really delve into those type of subjects unless the forum was created for that type of discussion.

No, that is not the reason. The main idea is that everyone could share their beleifs so there could be more understanding on our boards. That way we could find out more about eachother more than we could with the "Hello, my name is..." threads. Of course, that was the idea |-/

*EDIT*: I just saw Paradosis' post, and I agree with these sentiments: "I think that I can understand part of the appeal of wanting a religious or political part of a board like this. Yes, at last it has become clear to you. This entire universe was created, just for your amusment, just so you could grow to be the person you are today. Now you have seen though this, it is time for you to leave the cradle, and ascend to take you place with the others. My purpose is now complete and I face the void willingly as I know I have helped to create a perfect being.

Sinner, don't be mean or sarcastic |-/ (If you weren't being mean, ignore this. Blame the boards for not being able to tell me if you're being sarcastic.)

No! This IS SPARTA!!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

And Norrington, considering Sinner's other posts, I think it's safe to assume he's joking. ;-)

Just to clarify, no I was not being mean or sarcastic. I was just being silly. *wacko* Even so, sorry if I annoyed you. After hinckley39s comment it seemed appropiate, but maybe it wasn't considering the topic.

Sorry for the misunderstanding :-) After all, I did say "Ignore this comment if you blah, blah, blah."
