D2C Contest: The Jellyfish Cafe

Recommended Posts

The Atlantis exploration team and the Atlantis gaurdians have grown tired of fighting each other and decided to become partners in an eco-tourism venture instead. "The Jellyfish Cafe" is thier dive base for providing guided tours of the ancient underwater wonders of Atlantis! Ace Speedman runs the cafe with H'thjillgth the squidman, whilst Prof. Sam Rhodes runs the tours from thier custom mini-sub. Other Atlantis gaurdians provide security services, steering visitors away from hazards such as sea anenomes and the black denzien that lives underneath the cafe. The Jellyfish cafe caters for both gilled and non-gilled patrons, with a dedicated oxygen section that can be reached through the patio airlock. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy such local delicacies as sea snake sushi, fish paste croissants and Irukandji tea - it's to die for! ;)

The cave underneath the cafe is home to a nameless horror nicknamed "the black denzien". But Ace and H'thjillgth don't mind thier neighbour, afterall, the denzien provides a handy way of getting rid of all the kitchen scraps. (Not to mention the odd rude customer!)

The layout of the cafe is modular and is comprised of 3 levels. The ground floor is the water cafe, the airlock and the oxygen dining area. The second floor (up the stairs in the oxygen section) is the dive eqipment room and airlock to the mini-sub docking platform. The top floor is the rotunda lookout and cafe sign.

A close up of the ground floor airlock. Bindi Irwin can be seen through the canopy of the oxygen dining area, enjoying a nice hot cup of jellyfish tea.

The mini-sub on it's own. It is equiped with floodlights, robot arm and camera.

Wow, a very ingenious idea for a contest entry gabe! Not only is it excellently done overall, but the non-combative nature of this build is like a breath of fresh air amidst the usual 'heroes fight the bad guys' concept of action theme sets. The modularity makes for a highly-playable set, and I really like that cool-looking mini-sub. Impressive job and good luck!

Although TLG would never make this because it's not exactly what kids seem to be interested in, it's still a fantastic entry. I love the shipwreck, and the beast is great. There's not a lot of interior details that are cafe related, but the exterior is beautiful. Well done, and good luck!

Thanks! Glad you like the mini-sub, that's my favourite part of the model. Yeah, i never really got into the theme of divers robbing the Atlantis gaurdians etc, or that the gaurdians were themselves evil. :sceptic: Land (water?) rights for Atlanteans i say! Which of course means a proper stake in any business venture in thier territories.

Thankyou! Eh, it's not really a set aimed at kids - but neither are a lot of D2C sets either. I can well imagine that it would be a bit too large and sprawling for TLG to make as an official set though - it just kept growing and growing as i was building it. :oh3: I could have kept going, good thing i ran out of time! Sorry about the lack of good interior shots btw, this shot shows more detail of the cafe interior.

I smell a celebrity endorsement!

Haha, maybe! But perhaps not the celebrity you are thinking of?

Great build Gabe!

I especially like the airlock and the happy-go-lucky smile the girl in the window has going!

I'm also really liking the color scheme, the design of the building, the way the sunken ship has been angled to look like a realistic wreck, and of the course your several brick-built sea "monsters". Great entry, I wish you the best of luck in the contest!

Thanks Sirens-Of-Titan! :classic: I'm glad you like the colour scheme, i really didn't want to go with the traditional red and trans bright-green palette of the Atlantis sets.. Large sets like the Portal of Atlantis managed to avoid it, after all. I'm a bit sad that i'm going to have to dismantle this MOC soon (on a deadline for a display and i need the bricks) - it's looking really good on my living room table!

Awesome MOC, but what really won me over was the ship wreckage on the side of the cafe. It just adds an awesome sense of style to the entire model. Really classy entry you have there sir.
