Captain Braunsfeld

[MOC] Frigate HMS Jupiter

Recommended Posts

pirates-indexed.gif 166D

Ahoy,

time for a more serious attempt to build a ship: This is the HMS Jupiter (3rd generation).

jupiter3-0-b_3.jpg

jupiter3-0_32.jpg

The model is loosely based on the HMS Diana (many non-lego models seem to be around - check out this e.g. http://www.modelship...Diana_I_eng.htm)

So, we have the captain:

jupiter3_6.jpg

... and his crew (with many custom cannons)...

jupiter3_5.jpg

There she is sailing away:

jupiter3-0_36.jpg

jupiter3-0_35.jpg

Some different custom cannons on deck: :pir-sweet:

jupiter3-0_12.jpg

jupiter3-0_03.jpg

jupiter3_24.jpg

... not to forget Jupiter himself:

jupiter3_26.jpg

.. and one of two custom carronades: :pir-sweet:

jupiter3_25.jpg

The ship is built in a modular way:

jupiter3_3.jpg

For some strange reason Emmet found his way onboard

jupiter3-0_09.jpg

but he found himself equally terrified by a crew member and by the ship's goat. :pir-grin:

(Oh, no monkey on this one)

This is a joint collaboration of me and my son and we are both happy and proud about the result. :pir-classic::pir-sweet:

Please send your comments!

(Actually, the HMS Jupiter does not look so yellow in reality. I still need to convince my photo editing program to produce something decent... :pir-look: )

This is a beautiful frigate Captain! I love the color with the traditional yellow and black with that blue on the stern. Great job Captain.

Nicely done!

So many costum guns, I like the climbing ropes used for rigging,

a fine frigate indeed, it looks ready to do some serious battling out in the sea...Well, apart from Emmet and the goat roaming about pirate_laugh_new.gif .

Nicely done Frigate, this version far exceeds the previous versions. Congrats, she's magnificent, well proportioned, and I even like all the livestock on deck.

Great job Captain,

David

I was not really happy with the initial pictures pirate_sceptic.gif , so I took some more. pirate_satisfied.gif

As this is the biggest ship I've built it was also the most difficult one to photograph...

jupiter3-0-b_5.jpg

Here are a few details:

jupiter3-0-b_16.jpg

These cannons are used on deck.

This is Jupiter:

jupiter3-0-b_20.jpg

This is how we tried to do the rigging ("Wanten"):

I think the pictures are better now (with also less soldiers on board)

Ok, bye for now!

What a beautiful frigate you've build Captain Braunsfeld. I particularly like how wide the yellow stripe is and the blue accent on the cathead. The different brick build guns are cool to see. I think the piece you used for the barrel on the main battery of cannons is perfect. I would like to see if that barrel could be placed on the other carriage design.

I'm a fan of this more realistic style of ship but I surely miss the monkey. monkey.gif

This is a really great ship. It shows nicely how you progress in your building skills. And a lot of cool details like the cannons.

I'm not 100% convinced of the color sceme, but I guess that that's a matter of taste

This is really cool! I especially like how you used a lot of bright colours, (I like bright colours). I wish you had taken some extra time to make some sort of sail for it, I feel like it would have been pretty impressive to have mixed LEGOs and paper or some other material. I also wish that you had built some sort of realistic looking water for it be rest on. These are really nitpicky things though, and I could never make anything even half as good as this, so good job.

I really like this build. Over all it’s just a nice ship. If there is one thing I don’t like about her, it’s the stern gallery, seems less refined than the rest. As for the shape, color scheme, level of detail, etc. I love it. I don’t want to throw around words like “historic” or “accurate” too much but, there’s a lot of effort to that effect in there and it shows. The rigging is actually pretty clever. I’ve seen, heck I’ve used worse solutions. One question though: that brick at the center of your neat little brick built guns; the one with the post which holds the barrel up. What brick is that? Do I spy a Mega Block? *gasp*pirate_oh.gif

Thanks for sharing her!

Thank you for your friendly comments.

I would like to answer a few:

pir_wacko.gif Yes, the monkey is missing. It has become something like my signature figure... I'll post two below to make up. pirate_laugh2.gif

You are most likely referring to the choice of yellow. I always felt that the British ships used a color which is "in between" of tan and yellow.

What I probably will do (when I update the ship next time) is to exchange the lowest layer of yellow with a layer of black.

As Kabel said, it is a matter of taste. pirate_satisfied.gif I also like bright colors!

Sails ... yes, next time. But it takes time (and some practise).

On the other hand, once you have all the sails, you can hardly see the ship pirate_laugh2.gif

Realistic water: I have tried that for the "Royal Monkey" (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=99608)

It turned out that I did not have enough of these little blue bricks... As the Jupiter is larger than the "Royal Monkey" it will not work out until I find lots of transparent dark blue round plates.

Thanks for liking her.

Stern gallery: Good point for the next update. pirate_wink.gif

Brick built guns:

As I do not own any megablocks I am absolutely safe in not using them. pir_laugh2.gif

I have used one strange brick which is purely lego (and which really is strange). Let me show you some more details about the different cannons:

customcannondecomposition1.jpg

customcannondecomposition2.jpg

The strange brick is 4569407 (to be found in http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/10222_Winter_Village_Post_Office#).

The other one:

customcannons2.jpg

customcannons2b.jpg

I thought they would be done this way until I saw Sebeus' solution, which allows a slightly lower position of the barrel (?).

Hi Captain,

what a wonderful creation, a 'serious attempt' finished seriously successful! The mix of accurate model ship building and your own comic-like style elements... I'm a huge fan, and this ship is marvelous! pirate_wubnew.gif

Your main battery guns... thanks for showing a detailed how-to, I never would have considered that part (I might 'borrow' that design now pirate_laugh2.gif), I do like the rigging as well, tip: if you happen to have tons of this part or something comparable like this here for example, your sailors would have something to stand on... I tried this in LDD but it's most annoying to add, might work out better 'in the brick' pirate_wink.gif

Oh, and thanks for adding the monkey in the last pics, it was indeed missing!

Congrats on a beauiful vessel and

Brick on!
