New LEGO Fantasy Theme -- A MOC Series

Hey guys!

This is the topic for a group of creations I've been working on for a while now. My general M.O. for MOCing is that I make creations to be as stable, functional, and reasonably-sized as real LEGO sets. The creations I make in my "themes" are designed to go together well, and be highly playable as a cohesive theme. The theme below is the fifth I've made this way, and is sorta a "revamp" of one I did a few years ago, with many of the same set concepts executed in much greater depth and detail (and better photographed!), but at once streamlined and simplified.

I'm calling it "(Not) LEGO Dragon Lands." The premise of (Not) LEGO Dragon Lands is pretty basic, to stay in line with what TLG would do for one of their original themes: the humans of the Kingdom of Ardun are at war with the orc-like Ustokal of the Essoni Desert. Doesn't really matter what they're fighting over, does it? Magic is a big component in this world, as sorcerers and wizards and powerful Legendary Weapons and Dragons(!) are all key assets in the Human-vs.-Ustokal conflict. Something fun I decided to do was set the theme in two principal locations: the hot Essoni Desert, and the Kingdom of Ardun in the wintertime... it should be pretty apparent which sets are from which locale, as the Ustokal will or won't be wearing mittens! There are a few recurring main characters, who get both desert and winter outfits, which was something I liked playing around with.

I had a great time implementing a lot of "magical" functions in these sets, especially by using the new Star Wars spring launchers as "Spell Launchers." I also had a blast updating my old dragon design to be much more detailed and poseable. I challenged myself to make the siege engines that appear in the theme to be as compact as possible while maintaining their functionalities and structural integrity, which actually made me create some weapons I'm very happy with (you'll be seeing them in some later sets).

Clicking the images below brings you to larger versions on Flickr. Feel free to visit the theme's Flickr Album for more in-depth looks at the sets! If you want to see the next steps of the (Not) LEGO Dragon Lands project, check out wave 2 here, wave 3 here, and wave 4 here. Thanks for viewing, any comments and critiques you have are welcomed.

Needs more dwarves!

...and elves.

...and...something in addition to orcs to add to the enemy roster. Kobolds? Stumpy little goblins? Dark elves? Dragonkin?

My insatiable appetite for expanding a reborn Fantasy theme aside, this is looking pretty awesome! Love the figs and the builds! That crossbow is terrific! I just saved 15% on exclamation points by switching to GEICO!

Very good start! I thought about a Fantasy theme involving 4 factions about right before LOTR wave 1 and while still in my Lego dark age.

It involved 4 regions or kingdoms. The West was a huge forest with Elves, the South was a swamp belonging to Goblins who had overrun and destroyed the meadows and streams of the Hill Elves. The East are the dwarves who stay to themselves but are embroiled in a new war with the North. The North are an ancient human kingdom that was destroyed in the past and are now ruled by Necromancers and undead.

The Forest elves have magic defenses against the undead towards the north. While their Hill kindred refugees try to retake their old streams now made swamps by the Goblins. The North kingdom of Necromancers is invading the Dwarven realm to steal a powerful magical artifact called the Tear of Mediai.

The Goblins are shamanistic and primitive so most of their design reflects that with voodoo like encampments strung across swampland amongst decaying beautiful ruins of the once proud elf cities.

I had originally designed maybe 2 sets for each faction. The largest one was Dwarven and involved the Tear of Mediai chamber and battle for it.

One was a Forest Elf outpost fighting an Undead small force.

Another was a Battlepack of Undead vs Forest Elves

Another set was a Goblin swamp being infiltrated by Hill Elf scouts.

The other Goblin themed set centered around a broken fountain in elven ruins and a battle there between Goblins and Elves.

The Undead had a set with one of their half frozen and broken castles to the North with Dwarven siege weapons trying to preemptively strike.

I'm looking forward to this. I was very impressed with your series of LOTR sets.

It's a great start, my only comment would be that the figures are the wrong colour. TLG rules are flesh for licensed themes, yellow for everything else. The are quite rigorous at following that rule, the soon to be released 21109: Exo-Suit was proposed with flesh figures but changed to yellow figures during the design process.

One of the limiting factors is going to be the number of Sand-Green minifig heads available, just 3 from the Fantasy Era Troll line, I know I've struggled to build variation into my army of Trolls with just those 3 heads.

I saw someone use Squidward's head for one recently, as well as CMF Medusa's. I used a spare Lady Liberty head for a less-fierce orc lady. I'm tempted to do up a bunch of orc face stickers based on some fun yellow faces, just with red eyes and maybe tusks. There are also a couple Frankenstein's Monster heads that make good black-eyed orcs, and those Mandrake Baby heads from Harry Potter (pricey as they are)

Great Job designing these sets. They look like LEGO sets, have playability like LEGO sets, and are awesome like LEGO sets.

And nice job incorporating the Spring Shooters into a castle MOC.

I like the sets... but the prices seem to be hitting a bit low ;)

I dunno, I think the battle packs might hit that mark given the apparent part-count and the fact it's not licensed (fleshie humans aside). The two-person mini-build seem about right for $13 sets, too; really it's only the dragon set that seems low, given how nice and part-intensive the dragon looks, but I imagine $25 might cover it so it's not off by much.

In any case, still digging it a lot! Just wish there were some elves & dwarves in the mix

Nice set designs with an interesting concept, but the use of flesh minifigs throws me off. And as The_Cook points out, it would never happen. But I do like the orcs/trolls!

Wow, very nice designs. The spring shooters as magic attacks is a fantastic idea.

My favorite is the Desert Duel. It looks just like something Lego would put out. But they're all great. Nice work! Looking forward to the rest!

I really like the design of the magic halberd and the Necromancer Peak. With Prince Orion's magic shield it says that it can generate magical shields of energy. I think it would be better to include an actual shield under the magic formed shield Orion is holding. Maybe something like a Lego shield with a circular stud to connect it.

Will you be making more sets? The magic spring missiles are a great idea!

Interesting concepts. I do agree the prices are a bit low. Wasn't the recent Castle sets at around $13 for 4 figures and a small build?

Needless to say, if these were available at these prices, I'd snatch them up.

I like the figure combinations for the most part. The viking torso with the gold arms was really neat. And I like the light metallic silver helmet for the CMF Elf torso. I hadn't considered that, even though it is quite obvious.
