The spring evening was warm and inviting to most of the citizens of Eubric. Chasing away the winter's cold, it was a welcome change to the frosty cold nights of the months prior. Without the weather to stop them, many ships were taking on bigger cargoes to get in a few precious journeys between the biting cold and the agonizing heat the ocean offered. One of these such voyages was the one this group of heroes was meant to protect. A voyage undertaken by a ship known to a few of them. A voyage that would alter the fortunes of more people than was expected.

With luck, these heroes would be prepared to face it.

The docks were about winding down the day. The responsible, early-morning sailors turned in for the night while the late-night drinkers and beggars were just stirring awake. One by one, the heroes made their way from the Hall or the Marketplace down to the docks, to the pier as described in yesterday's quest notice, yet upon arriving, found nothing of interest, just an empty dock.

Paranoid heroes might see a lot of somewhat ordinary happening around the docks as suspicious. More relaxed heroes would perhaps assume the ship was only late. But as minutes rolled by, and the sun began to set, as minutes turned into what seemed like hours, only one thing was certain as hopes of a late arrival sank.

The Magpie was not coming.

What would the heroes do?

Since this is a longer quest and we need to make sure we don't stall, JimBee, if you could establish someone as a back-up party leader to help do battle orders or make decisions while you're not around that would help.

Hoke cheefully greets his fellow Heroicans one by one, introducing himself to those he has never met before.

Hoke becomes a bit concerned as time goes by. The Magpie should have been here by now, but the ship was nowhere in sight.

"I may need your help on this one. Take flight and seek her out," he says to Torc after he describes the ship to the best of his recollection.

"How fares the docks," he asks the cloaked man.

Hybros arrived at the docks and looked out over the sea. The sunset made his pupils shrink to slivers, and his crimson eyes reflected the deep orange hue of the sky. He smelled the spring air, and the sea breeze rippled through his wings. "Does anyone know what this ship looks like? We are in the right spot, I think... perhaps someone with a telescope can scan the waters, eheh." He looked around. "I am Hybros by the way," he addressed the heroes whom he did not know: a woman from the East, a shirtless man with a large helmet, and another human with his dragon companion.

OOC: Thanks for choosing me, Pie! I made a stop to the Marketplace; Em should have 208 gold, and I should have 295. I bought 2 Neautralizers, 2 Tiger Balms, 10 Remedies, and Em's items which I will hand over shortly. Scuba is second-in-command.

The boxes and barrels contain various foodstuffs, including a lot of grain and other odds and ends. Nothing seems particularly valuable, but it's strange fare to just have laying out on a dock. Everything is haphazardly piled as if in a hurry. Something black and ashy comes off on Em's fingers as he pokes through it all.

Guts holds a gold coin in front of the beggar's cup. "Seen the Magpie around, lately?"

The stony-faced beggar looks up at Guts tiredly as he's plied with money.

Sir, have you seen anything unusual recently? Any ships coming through?

"Lots of ships come through here. If you're looking for a ship that's not here it's probably gone by now..."

Hoke becomes a bit concerned as time goes by. The Magpie should have been here by now, but the ship was nowhere in sight.

"I may need your help on this one. Take flight and seek her out," he says to Torc after he describes the ship to the best of his recollection.

"How fares the docks," he asks the cloaked man.

Torc gets a running headstart off the dock and takes off into the air. After a few minutes she returns, having spotted no ship resembling the Magpie.

"Ships come through, money changes hands, sailors curse, old men drink, businessmen get stoned, Bonapartes guard things. Usual...'fare'."

Hybros nodded, partially because his body bobbed up and down from the handshake. "The same to you. And your companion..." he looked up to the sky where Torc soared. "She will be joining us, yes? I recently quested with another dragon, by the name of Arx. He was almost as big as your friend, heheh."

Guts rolls his eyes but plonks the coin into the cup anyways.

"What are the Bonapartes guarding, anything in particular?"

The Alchemist also checks out the red splotch that seems to be there on the docks.

Mortimer rubs his fingers together. "Ash?" he mutters thoughtfully. "Were any ships alight, beggar? Fire is not easy to forget."

Hearing Hybros' suggestion, he quickly brings his telescope up to his good eye, scanning the horizon.

"No. Nothing in particular."

The red splotch is, of course, blood. There's a long smear from the pier's edge leading up onto the stonework of the dock itself. It's all dried, however.

Mortimer rubs his fingers together. "Ash?" he mutters thoughtfully. "Were any ships alight, beggar? Fire is not easy to forget."

"No, no fire. Sorry. I've been around for the past week or so and this dock's been deserted."

Mortimer doesn't have any more luck than Torc. There are only a few scattered ships still up and about the gulf, and many more in the docks, but none of them appear to be the Magpie.

"Yes, she will be joining us on this quest. I am rather anxious to see how she handles battle. We have trained and journeyed together, but she has not been combated tested."

"Blood. Could be anyone's. Enough things go down around here that this could be anything from a vampire dropping his midnight drink to a serial killer's victim's last struggle to someone walking into a door. But. Since we're having a ship that's not there AND blood on this dock, I'm guessing it's relevant."

"Deserted for an entire week?" Mortimer repeats, taken aback.

He shakes his head, taking a few careful steps onto the pier and glancing into the water itself.

The Warden scowls as he inspects the water, addressing the beggar again. "Is there a log of incoming and outbound traffic? Of cargo? Who's in charge of the dock?"

"From what I saw of Thormanil and his dragon, as long as the bond is close you will always be there to help each other. I have never seen two people work so closely together before, heh."

Hybros turned to Dyric. "It is good to hear that you were skilled enough to defeat Wren. In that case..." he presented a red package. "The mark of a true assassin. If you are truly as skilled as you appear, then this Cloak of the Red Assassin will strike fear into our enemies. Take it." As Dyric unfolded the cloak, he found that wrapped inside it was the Sword of Ancestral Hatred. "Sometimes this trade requires getting closer to the enemy than they would suspect. Take this blade, it will slice through flesh without resistance. Oh, and this too..." he handed over the Banana Bladerang. "Take care of these items, I expect them back at the end of this journey, heheh."

He then addressed Em, and handed over the 2 Mulled Wines, 2 Ambrosias, and 2 Phoenix Essences that he had purchased for the Warden.

"How should I know this?" replied the beggar, clearly getting impatient with the questions. "There's nothing here for you."

"Hm, then I suppose we should look elsewhere. If the Bonapartes truly know everything that goes on in these seas, then they will know where the Magpie has gone."

Hoke whispered something in Torc's ear.

She stalked towards the beggar and lowered her head to be eye level with him. She suddenly snarled with a snort of acidic air from her nostrils, bearing her razor sharps fangs.

"You see," Hoke says to the beggar,"young dragons are rather impatient. It would be in your best interests to put down whatever you are drinking and tell us all you know."

Hoke turns to his quest mates and shoots them a wink.

Erik greets the rest of the heroes.

"Yeah, quite bad relations with the Bonapartes, I seem to recall."

He places a coin in the beggars cup.

"I think ive seen you before. What misfortune has caused you to be here?" He asks.

(OOC: sorry I'm in a rush, but he's not the ship's mage is he? Also ninja'ed.)

Mortimer stared down into the sea, shimmering red thanks to the setting sun. Stuck to the side of the dock was a torn, bloodied bit of bandage.

"How should I know this?" replied the beggar, clearly getting impatient with the questions. "There's nothing here for you."

Mortimer wants to press the beggar further, but sees that his questmates have it handled. He watches the scene quietly, reading to step in with Vigilant should things get violent.

OOC: I should have Doppleganger (WP: 10, Retribution: The user inflicts any negative effects he or she has on the target enemy on successful hits; longsword) in my inventory as well, since Karie let Em keep the sword. Sorry!

The beggar frowned through his thick beard, waving away Torc's acidic breath with his free hand.

"All I know that you're wasting your time with this. You don't want to be here. Leave." The beggar's angered last word reverberated in the air slightly as he fixed the party with an almost challenging look.
