Favourite and least favourite Western films & discussion

Recommended Posts

So what are your favourite and least favourite Western films?

I haven't seen many, but so far my favourites are:

The Lone Ranger-vastly underrated western. Poorly paced, but the end more than made up for it.

Maverick-not as much action as in TLR, but still lots of excitement and the casting was solid.

Least favourite:

Daniel Boone (1956)-I got about 20 minutes in and I was very disappointed. Very forgettable.

Don't know about least favorite, but my favorite is definitely Rango. Loved that movie.

Lone Ranger was good, too. And Cowboys and Aliens.

... Actually, I think that's all the Westerns I've seen. No wonder I don't have a least favorite.

Favourite Western films would have to be tied with;

  • Shane (1953)
  • Stagecoach (1966-first remake)
  • The Searchers (1956)

Honestly, I'm a fan of most western films no particular least favourite as far as I can think of.

I'll agree that the pacing of Lone Ranger was awful, but the whole is not the sum of its parts. What works in the Lone Ranger works really well. I like Fichtner as Cavendish, I enjoy the action scenes, the lat twenty minutes are a hell of a thing; in all honesty, with a few more drafts and some more time in the editing room, this film could have been great, but as it stands, it's only decent.

My favourite western though is probably Django Unchained. Cristoph Waltz in a Western? Yes please.

I need to watch more, but my favorite western has to be the original True Grit from 1969. The new one seems better, but the older one has the feel of a great, campy western.

I think I can agree with your statement about TLR. Fitchner was fantastic as Butch Cavendish!

Django Unchained and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly were my favorites. The story in Django made little sense, but it was action packed and funny, so it made up for it, and the music in TG,TB,TU was awesome.

My least favorite was Cowboys and Aliens. I mean, come on, it's a movie about cowboys... Fighting aliens! It makes no sense. Also, Daniel Craig pretending to be a cowboy is unbearable.

A Million Ways to Die in the West gets an honorable mention. An average comedy, but better than most westerns I've seen.
