A pretty cool box that shows important stuff like the length of the entire train in inches and centimetres.

It also has the part count (1234 bricks).

And some playfeature pics on the back.

5562318490_f30723f569_o.jpg

The box holds a bunch of numbered polybags (1 & 2) plus some unnumbered ones and a cardboard wrapped stickersheet and manuals. The polybags numbered 1 are for the engine, the bags numbered 2 are for the waggons, containers and truck.

5561740989_e0ea39a0dd_o.jpg

The dreaded stickersheet is not that dreaded in this set.

But that may be because of the simple fact that it hasn't been crumpled and wrinkled inside the box.

There's plenty of trans stickers that goes STAMP :sceptic:

But they really add that little extra touch

There's the cardboard wrap 7 digit numbers should any have interest in them.

When opening the manual, you're confronted with the cooperative history of Maersk and LEGO.

The sets previously done by LEGO for Maersk.

(Morten still believe they left out some of the 10152's)

5561741085_a834172e75_o.jpg

Don't pour the parts on a carpet floor, put them in random places on your table instead.

And don't mix the bags - the build depends on it!

And see? Bags numbered "1" build the engine.

5562318760_41f352824b_o.jpg

Simple instruction steps, nothing too difficult in this 14+ set.

5562318872_16da6cbdc0_o.jpg

Ready to build the engine.

All parts in one pile on the table as requested on page 1.

Step 40

5562319148_37e2e3fef8_o.jpg

Aaaand Done!

The entire set is pretty straight-forward.

The engine is definately the most interesting build.

The tiny tip toe steps does make it a little too easy in my opinion, but I guess that if this is meant for 14+, then that's to be expected.

The ends of the engine are nifty SNOT designs which are far superior to for example the ends of the BNSF engine.

5562319580_d470ccb3cc_o.jpg

One of the set's playfeatures, that allows you to inspect the engine.

Nice touch.

5561742331_872b74a719_o.jpg

The container waggons are well designed.

There's nothing fancy pantsy about them, but then again when are container waggons fancy?

5562320254_500afaaaf4_o.jpg

5562320352_f8974db4dc_o.jpg

The truck is awesome.

It really looks like the kind of truck that drives around the harbours moving containers.

Plus it's more than just a sidekick, it's a part of the set and not just there to up the parts count.

It adds more playability in a good way and makes the set more versatile.

5561743143_c6b3b6017e_o.jpg

The containers are simple, yet very effective in their design.

The use of the sliding garage 1x2 bricks adds great texture to the containers.

Now it's time to purchase more on bricklink in other colours to make even more containers from other firms

A few pics of the set.

I think we'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Now for those of you who've claimed that this is a ripoff from the BNSF we can only say:

"Wrong "

The two trains are visibly different and the Maersk Engine is superior design-wise in several ways.

For example the engine cockpit is better and without visible "cracks" and the rear of the engine is also way better designed.

Final Conclusion:

If you don't have this set, then make sure you'll get it.

It's got plenty of great parts and plenty of them in Maersk blue as well.

The price is fair - no matter where you live.

What's your thoughts on this?

5561839765_7c7016150b_z.jpg

As you can see the LEGO Maersk sets have improved in quality and design since the first one came in 1975.

The recent ones being the 10155 Marsk Ship (remake of the 10152) and now the 10219 Maersk Train.

Big sets

Hi KimT,

wonderful review :thumbup:, but how did you get that set? It is available April 1st here and there, April 15 there and here ...

So true. On another thought, there are now how many years between those two beauties? And how many diesels have been designed in the mean time by LEGO fans? I sort of remember that when the BNSF was available, the little cheesy slopes were simply not existing ...

Oh, and one more thing: In the Maersk train cab the driver cannot look back and figure out whats happening behind him ... on the BNSF he could. (Yes I am picky ...)

Final Conclusion:

If you don't have this set, then make sure you'll get it.

I completely agree, the moment it becomes available, I am all over it. This set is fantastic. But we should also give credit to all the ingenious builders here on EB and out there in the world who probably contributed - without knowing -to this beautiful design (as far as I am concerned, that is the case!).

Thanks again, I want this train even more now!

I had already decided not to buy this, but I think you just changed my mind! (Can you pay for it for medefault_laugh_new.gif)

I already want S4, Hogwarts Castle x 5 and all the summer Harbour sets, plus a whole lot of Harbour stuff I made on Design By Me.

How long do you think this is going to be around for?

What an outstanding review KimT, you've shown the set in an excellent light. While I don't have any money in the LEGO kitty at the moment, I'm going to have to raise some dollars to buy one (or two) of these sets.

On a side note, how does the train go around curves and points? Not that it's hugely long, but does it struggle in any way? How about points?

All in all a great review of a great set! Thanks KimT! :classic:

 'KimT'....thank you for a great review of what could be considered set of the year !

By your description it sounds easier than the EN, and that SNOT engine looks fantastic.

Actually my favorite part of this set is the container tractor, Lego have not made a vehicle like this before.

Now in a few days I'll place my order for one these.....hopefully get one before my birthday....yep, build a train while drinking a bottle of scotch !

Brick On Everyone !

Thanks for such a great review, KimT!

One question though, is the train compatible with the PF Lights? I can't quite make it out from the pictures.

Way to make an already hugely appealing set even more lust-worthy.

That engine is a real beauty, the details are superb. The supporting wagons, containers, and truck round out the set and really make it a must-have. And who doesn't love that Maersk blue?

Thanks for the review, KimT!

Wow, great review KimT. I've been waiting for this one to come but didn't expect it to come until the release date of April 1st. I haven't owned a single LEGO train engine before, but this one will be my first.

Thanks for the review. I'm not a train fan, but it does look great. The containers are also nice.

That blue is really great though. :classic:

Too bad they didn't used the stockcar idea like set 10170. The train looks good. I think the containers are 2studs too wide and the the truck also. If I buy this set, I'm gonna build this train on 12v and build the wagons like the stockcars of set 10170. Containers are going to be the same size as the stockcar containers. Truck is als gonna be modified.

Very good review. How did you get this set already and you're showing off to have 2 sets  .

No idea, I guess it is.

It shows, on the back, that it's compatible with PF sets 8878, 8887, 8884, 8879 & 88002.

No idea what those are - my last train was the High Speed Train.

And the only PF I've got is on my Motorized AT-AT

Very good review. How did you get this set already and you're showing off to have 2 sets  .

I didn't get this.

Morten did - it seems they're available in Maersk's own employee stores.

So he got one for me and one for him through some guy that he knows who work there.

The review is actually done by both of us - I'm just the "poster".

I'm uploading better resolution pics to my flickr right now.

I'll put a link in the review's first post.

8878+8887 = rechargeable battery box and its charging transformer

8884 = IR receiver

8879 = IR remote

88002 = PF train motor

So the lights (8870) aren't mentioned. Well, maybe there's a way to add them anyway. :)

Lovely review Kim on a much anticipated set. I love the whole colour scheme and can't wait to get my mitts on one of these beauties one day. Thanks for laying out all the details so a relative new comer to trains such as myself can digest it all.

Thank you so much for treating us an early Maersk treat!

I love it so much and this train excites me as much as the first time when I saw the Emerald Night. I will definitely pick up this! Let's hope I can see this in the local stores.

Great review KimT!

Man, this sure looks like a must buy! All the elements forming the set (from the design, the colour scheme, the minifigs etc) are excellent. This is definitely going to be my first train after 1989.

Tomorrow is a critical day for that. We'll see.

Thanks for the review!
